The FedEx Cup playoffs get underway Thursday, as Liberty National hosts the postseason-opening Barclays for the first time since 2009. The top 125 in the points standings are eligible to tee it up this week (though the field will be 123, with the semi-retired Steve Stricker and Zach Johnson, who is attending his brother’s wedding, taking the week off).
Here’s a look at the best bets…
Webb Simpson (30/1): Simpson is rounding into form heading into the playoffs. Since the beginning of summer, he has four top-25's in six starts, including a solid T11 at last week’s Wyndham Championship that included a final-round 63. He was in the hunt the last time The Barclays was held at Liberty National, finishing eighth, just three strokes off the pace, after disappointing one-over 72's on Saturday and Sunday.
Brandt Snedeker (25/1): It’s been a rough August for Snedeker, who followed up his win at the RBC Canadian with a T33 at the Bridgestone, T66 at the PGA, and a missed cut at Sedgefield last week. But even in an up-and-down, injury-plagued year, Snedeker still ranks eighth on the Tour in scoring average (69.722) and fifth in putting (.727 strokes gained). He had a solo second at last year’s Barclays at Bethpage Black, and went T12 with a 67-66 finish at Liberty National in 2009.
Tiger Woods (5/1): In his last visit to Liberty National, Woods finished in a group of four runners-up, one stroke behind winner Heath Slocum. His performance in non-major Tour stroke play events this season has been outstanding, with five wins in seven starts. Though, as usual, the payoff is relatively meager for the heavily favored Woods.
Dustin Johnson (25/1): Johnson has come on strong over the past month, posting two top-10's in three starts (T2 at the RBC Canadian, and T8 at last week’s Wyndham Championship). He finished T3 at Bethpage Black last year, and T15 at Liberty National in 2009.
Ian Poulter (50/1): He had built some momentum heading into the PGA Championship, going T3 at the British and T19 at Firestone, before a disappointing T61 finish at Oak Hills. He finished T9 at Liberty National in 2009.
