My 8* West Coast Capper is on the SD Padres at 10:10 ET.
The San Diego Padres have been shut out more times than any team in MLB and are last in scoring (3.02 RPG), as they begin a four-game series against the visiting Chicago Cubs on Thursday. San Diego was blanked by Minnesota on Wednesday, marking the EIGHTH time the Padres have failed to score in 2014. However, it's hardly ALL bad news for San Diego with the sad-sack Cubs coming to town.
The Cubbies wasted yet another excellent effort Wednesday afternoon by staff ace, Jeff Samadzija. The former Notre Dame wide receiver went seven scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 1.46 on the season. However, the Cubs fell 4-2 in 13 innings to the Yanks. Despite his splendid ERA, his 1.09 WHIP and having allowed just 53 hits in 68 innings, Samardzija is 0-4 after 10 starts in 2014, with the Cubs losing NINE of them (you CAN'T make this stuff up!).
The Cubs are 16-28 on the season, including 6-15 on the road and while they aren't quite as feeble as the Padres are at the plate (SD is batting a ML-low .222), the Cubs aren't too much better, batting .236 as a team, while averaging 3.95 RPG.
Jake Arrieta made his major league debut for the Orioles on June 10, 2010 against the New York Yankees at Camden Yards. He pitched six innings, giving up four hits and three runs, striking out six batters and earned the win. I'll also note that he started the home openers for the Orioles in 2011 and 2012, with both starts resulted in victories for the Orioles. However, It's hardly been smooth sailing for the right-hnader.
He was 6-6 with a 4.66 ERA in 2010 and 10-8 with a 5.00 ERA in 2011. After starting the 2012 season 3-9 with an ERA of 6.20, Arrieta was demoted to Triple-A on July 6, 2012. He began the 2013 season with four starts until being sent down to the Triple-A again, on April 22, 2013. He was recalled by the Orioles on May 18, and then optioned back down on May 23. He was recalled again on June 14. In five starts with the Orioles in 2013, Arrieta went 1-2 with a 7.23 ERA. He was traded along with Pedro Strop to the Cubs for Scott Feldman and Steve Clevenger and was optioned to Triple-A Iowa upon being acquired.
After making five starts for Iowa, Arrieta was recalled to start Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Brewers on July 30. In his Cubs debut, he gave up one run in six innings, earning a no-decision in the 3-2 loss. After the game, Arrieta was optioned to Iowa, where he made two more starts before being recalled on August 14 to replace Carlos Villanueva in the rotation. He made eight more starts before the end of the season. Overall, in nine starts with Chicago, he went 4-2 with a 3.66 ERA (team was 5-4).
He was sidelined to begin the 2014 season due to shoulder soreness but was able to rehab the injury. He made his 2014 debut May 3 and this will be his fourth start. He's yet to earn a decision in any of the first three but does own a solid 2.70 ERA (Cubs are 2-1), although his longest outing has been 5.1 innings (other two have lasted just four innings). However, he is pitching for a Chicago team which owns the worst record in the National League (16-28), after letting a two-run ninth inning lead get away in Wednesday’s 4-2, 13-inning loss to the Yankees.
Arrieta will go up against Eric Stults and while he's 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA in nine starts this season (SD is 5-4), one must look CLOSER! He's 0-4 with a 5.18 ERA in five road starts (SD is 1-4) but 2-0 with a 3.74 ERA in four home starts, with the Padres winning ALL four. That follows with last year's results, when the Padres went 10-5 in Stults' home starts, meaning they are now 14-5 (a 74% "play-on") in his home stars since the beginning of 2013.
Taking on the Cubs, Stults and the Padres are worth a play to me!
Good luck...Larry
