Sunday's NBA Action
Systems Analyst Larry Hertner

The NBA picks up the pace Sunday afternoon with a pair of nationally televised double-headers. Due to key injuries abound in both early contests (Bulls-Clippers, Cavaliers-Rockets), I believe it’s better suited to focus on the evening games. What’s intriguing about late matchups is that the road team is favored in five of the six games. Make a note that home teams have won 56 percent of regular season games in the NBA, which gives you an idea how tough it is to win on the road.

Now imagine how difficult it is to win and cover as visitors. To put things in perspective, there have been 14 road favorites in the NBA the last four days. In those games, the favorites and underdogs have fought to a 7-7 stalemate. However, the home underdogs have gone 10-4 against the spread and that includes a 3-0 mark (2-1 straight up) last night thanks to the Knicks, Heat and Timberwolves all cashing tickets. By the way, Miami's cover over Atlanta was a classic back-door. Here’s my quick handicap for the final six games.

•Charlotte @ Orlando: This is probably the toughest late game to handicap and that’s why the line is tight, Charlotte (-1 ½). The Magic have won two of the first three encounters against the Hornets this season, but both wins came on the road. In the first meeting between the pair at Orlando, the Hornets captured a 98-90 decision. The Magic have been very competitive lately, going 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10. However the club is just 4-6 during this span and with this line being so short, it makes you a tad hesitant to back them in this spot.

Charlotte has opened the second-half with a 1-3 record, the lone win was surprising too as it defeated Chicago 98-96 last Wednesday as a seven-point road ‘dog. Sure enough, the team loses in Boston (98-106) two nights later. The one issue with this team has been scoring and it’s clearly missing point guard Kemba Walker. In the 12 games he’s been out, the team has only scored more than 100 points twice. Charlotte is 5-7 during this span and the ‘under’ is 9-3.

•Golden State @ Boston:Oddsmakers sent out the Warriors as 7 ½-point road favorites and that number has jumped up to 8 ½ as of Sunday morning. The ‘over’ also received action, moving from 214 to 216 ½. This should be a fun game to watch and the winner could easily get to 120 points. This will the fifth game of a six-game road trip for the Warriors, who have gone 2-2 in the first four battles. Steve Kerr’s team has been a solid investment as road favorites this season, watching his squad go 18-5 SU and 12-11 ATS. Versus the Eastern Conference, Golden State has gone 18-4 SU and 11-10-1 ATS.

A lot of folks expected Boston to pack it in but that hasn’t been the case. If you go back to mid-January, the Celtics have gone 14-4 ATS and three of those non-covers came when the team was favored. The acquisition of point guard Isaiah Thomas from Phoenix has already produced success. The Celtics have gone 3-1 and in the lone loss (at Lakers), Thomas was ejected for picking up two technical fouls. During this span, Boston is averaging 111.8 PPG which has led to a 4-0 mark. Boston only has nine wins against the Western Conference this season but five have come at home.

•Philadelphia @ Indiana: Oddsmakers opened Indiana as an 11 ½-point home favorite, the only late-night host to be giving points. The Pacers have gone 10-6 SU and 8-7-1 ATS in this role but this will be the second time that they’re giving double digits. The first time it happened occurred on Jan. 13 and Indiana lost to Minnesota 110-101 as an 11-point home favorite. Coincidentally, these teams opened up the second-half of the season and Indiana ran past Philadelphia 106-95 as an 8 ½-point road chalk on Feb. 20. The 76ers followed up that loss with three more defeats before getting off the snide on Friday when they beat the Wizards 89-81 at home. It’s very hard to justify a play on Philadelphia, who is 5-25 SU and 12-18 ATS on the road. I wouldn’t run to the counter and bang Indiana either but the Pacers are quietly making a move and their 7-2 record both SU and ATS in February should be noticed. Knowing they’ll get a few days off before playing another bad team (Knicks) on Wednesday, I’d expect Indiana to be very sharp this evening.

•Portland @ Sacramento: The Trail Blazers opened as eight-point road favorites and it’s hard to see them losing to the Kings in this spot, especially with Sacramento All-Star forward DeMarcus Cousins (ankle) expected to miss action. There is a possible letdown in play for Portland, who just played the Grizzlies, Spurs and Thunder. They went 2-1 in those games. As a road favorites, the Blazers are 8-4 SU but 5-7 ATS. Sacramento has alternated wins and losses since the All-Star break, the setbacks coming to quality contenders in the Clippers and Spurs. Without Cousins, it’s a tough sell for the Kings who have gone 13-18 SU and 12-18-1 ATS at home.

•Oklahoma City @ L.A. Lakers:The Thunder opened as 3 ½-point road favorites. This line would be higher but All-Star Russell Westbrook was ruled ‘out’ with a cheek injury. Kevin Durant is also out for OKC too. Earlier in the season, the Thunder went 4-10 without the two players in the lineup and the lack of scoring was evident which helped produce a 10-4 ‘under’ record. OKC has definitely beefed up its roster since then but it might not be enough against a Lakers team that has won and covered their last three games. The offense is starting to click (106.3 PPG) during this run and that’s helped the ‘over’ go 3-0. The total on this game has already moved up to 204 from 202.

•New Orleans @ Denver: This matchup pits two teams going in different directions as New Orleans opened as a 5 ½-point road favorite. As bad as the Nuggets have been since the All-Star break (0-5 SU, 1-4 ATS), it’s hard to back the Pelicans as road favorites. New Orleans has gone 3-7 both SU and ATS when laying points on the road this season, the last instance coming on Feb. 20 when they were embarrassed at Orlando, 95-84. The Pelicans have won and covered four straight with three of those victories coming at home. The total in this game is a tough handicap too, considering Denver is averaging 87 PPG in its last five and New Orleans has busted the century mark in four straight.
