[h=2]Larry Ness' 10* Conf Tourney G.O.Y. (6-1, 86% this week)-Night)[/h]My 10* Conf 'Monster' Side (ACC Tourney GOY) is on North Carolina at 8:30 ET.
It’s safe to say that Year 2 in the ACC has gone much better than Year 1 for Notre dame. The Irish were just 6-12 in ACC play last year, ending the season 15-17, overall. However, Notre dame went 14-4 in league paly this year and with two wins so far in the ACC tourney, checks in at 28-5 overall, looking to capture it’s first-ever ACC tourney title (naturally!). As for North Carolina, while the Tar Heels have suffered longer ACC tournament championship droughts, the school would sure LOVE to “get over the hump” for the first time in seven years, given its close calls in recent years,
North Carolina last won the ACC tournament championship in 2008 but has made it to the title game in THREE of the past four years. The Tar Heels fell to Duke, Florida State and Miami in the championship game in consecutive seasons before bowing out in the quarterfinals last year. Junior guard Marcus Paige (13.6-4.6 APG) plans to put that experience to good use on Saturday. "I played in the ACC championship game my freshman year (in 2013), and we came really close," Paige said. "We played a great game, and we were unable to come through and win it. So we'll have some extra motivation there. We're going to be hungry. At that point once they throw the ball up, you can't worry about being tired.”
Joining Paige are a pair of 6-9 players for North Carolina, Johnson (13.0-7.9) and Meeks (11.8-7.6), plus freshman swingman Jackson (10.5-3.8-2.4) and 6-5 small forward Tokoto (8.4-5.1-4.1) round out the major contributors. Notre Dame starts just one big man in the 6-10 Auguste (12.3-6.0), surrounded by PG Grant (16.6-3.1-6.5), fellow guards Jackson (12.6-3.8-2.9) and Vasturia (9.5), plus 6-5 swingman Connaughton (12.6-7.5). Notre Dame’s bench consists basically of two forwards, the 6-8 Beachem (6.8) and the 6-5 Colson (6.0).
The Fighting Irish opened their tournament with a 70-63 win over Miami before downing No. 2 Duke 74-64 in the semifinals. Notre Dame led 41-26 at halftime and upped its conference-leading field goal percentage to 50.9 with a 25-for-50 shooting performance. That gave Mike Brey his career-best 28th win, 13 better than his team's 15-17 record last season. "One of the things I used to say all the time when we were in the Big East, `Let's get to Saturday," Brey said. "Darn if we're not playing for it ... and I've never been more confident of a group."
Another runner-up finish would be hard to take for North Carolina but with Notre Dame coming off a 74-64 upset of Duke (Irish were 8 1/2-point dogs!), could there be a better chance for North Carolina? That Tar Heels will also be playing with revenge, after the Irish won 71-70 back on Jan 5 in Chapel Hill. North Carolina arrived in Greensboro with just ONE win this season over a top-25 opponent but can complete the ‘hat trick’ by knocking off No. 10 Notre Dame here, after taking out No. 14 Louisville and No. 3 Virginia. That’s the bet!
