Analysis:
As far as situational handicapping goes, if this game was not on everybody’s list, I’d be surprised. Loyola is coming off a HUGE win against Gonzaga, one where their fans stormed the court (stupid) and the emotions were at an all-time high. Now, just two days later, they have a Portland squad coming into town that’s just one game back of the league leading Bulldogs. This is by far the toughest two game set that you’ll see in this conference, having to play Gonzaga and Portland with only a day in between. There’s no doubt that Loyola would be a risky proposition even if they lost to Gonzaga, but the fact that they won makes this look more and more like a HUGE letdown spot for them.
Portland knows they have got to win out to give themselves an outside shot at that league title. They have no big games coming up to end the season, and they’ll be fully focused on their toughest remaining opponent tonight. That game Loyola had against Gonzaga probably gave us a couple points on this line, just based of the public’s perception of how good this LMU team now is. In my opinion, however, this team is the same team we’ve seen all year, they just had a good night; and furthermore we’ll gladly take advantage of those extra points Vegas may be giving us due to the big win, because like I said, I see that win as a negative not a positive (for tonight).
Last time out this season Portland beat LMU by 40 points. No surprise that some of you system players will love to back LMU here, because they lost by a huge margin and are now a small home favorite. But there is a reason they lost by 40, and it’s the fact that Portland has them out-disciplined in every facet of the game. LMU is a team that shoots threes at a high percentage, but they do so by limiting their three point attempts to only wide open looks. Portland thrives off that philosophy, because they are one of the best teams that I’ve ever seen when it comes to baiting people into three-point shooting contests. Portland loves to depend on the three, and they do so very successfully, when they hit two or three in a two minute span, you’ll see teams start to jack up threes to stay with it… a team like LMU succeeds from behind the arc because they are selective, Portland really presses teams to be unselective and we saw that first hand the last time these two teams played. If Portland can bait this LMU team into a three point shooting contest, it’ll be over!
Another matchup note: Portland has a huge advantage at the line tonight, in the event this one stays close I like that to be a key factor. Also, LMU is not very good on the defensive glass.. A three point shooting team like Portland will get a ton of long rebounds off long shots, and if LMU isn’t blocking out, that could mean 2nd or 3rd attempts every time down.
I love this Junior and Senior led Portland team. Coming down to the important part of the season it really helps to have a veteran club. They’ll provide leadership, a level head, and full focus tonight. Take Portland to hand it to Loyola on the road tonight.
