Monday's Tip Sheet
Systems Analyst William Stillman
•Raptors @ 76ers – 7:05 PM EST
After Saturday’s embarrassing loss to the Knicks, the Raptors have now dropped five consecutive games and are thanking their lucky stars they play in the hopeless Atlantic Division. Toronto was 4-7 in February, dropping the first two, winning four straight and then ending the month in shame. Kyle Lowry sat out his first game on Saturday night, so he should at least be fresh if he returns for this season’s final game in his hometown. Head coach Dwane Casey was hoping to get him refreshed and Toronto’s next game is Wednesday at home against Cleveland, so it remains to be seen if anyone gets additional rest considering tonight’s competition. Lou Williams scored a game-high 22 points in New York, snapping out of a three-game funk where he’d shot 7-for-25. DeMar DeRozan continued his slump by finishing 3-for-15, finishing off a five-game stretch that has seen him shoot 24-for-81 (29.6 pct). He shot over 50 percent only once in all of February.
Nerlens Noel toiled through 34 minutes despite a sore right calf and left quad, so he may not be feeling all that great after banging with Roy Hibbert for much of Sunday night. To be fair, all of the 76ers were beat up in Indiana, as no one who took more than two field goal attempts managed to shoot 50 percent. Robert Covington led the way with 12 points and has scored in double-figures in 13 of the last 14, but injured an arm and is questionable. Isaiah Canaan and Ish Smith are splitting point guard duties almost down the middle these days. Canaan is shooting 34 percent since coming over from Houston and has managed just one assist in each of the past two games. Smith has shot 35 percent since signing with the team, but has been a better distributor and pushes the ball well. New forward Thomas Robinson made his 76ers debut in Inday after being claimed off waivers, playing 24 minutes and finishing with nine points and nine rebounds. Philadelphia is 0-3 against the Raptors thus far, but have covered the last two meetings.
•Warriors @ Nets – 7:35 PM EST
Klay Thompson came to the rescue with a big jumper when Golden State got down 56-30 in Boston on Sunday, as he and Stephen Curry checked in and got to work on stabilizing things, chipping away and then overwhelming the Celtics in the second half. Curry had 37 of the duo’s 57, but Thompson’s defense shouldn’t be ignored. The Warriors tied the season’s longest comeback thus far. Rest may be a factor here since Curry had been playing through a sore right ankle and this will be GSW’s fourth game in five nights. Center Andrew Bogut was expected to be rested on Sunday but participated due to Festus Ezeli’s one-game suspension, logging 18 minutes. This is the final leg of a six-game road swing that has seen them go 3-2.
The Nets might need a quarter to get back into a rhythm at Barclays Center since they haven’t played a game there since Feb. 6, having returned from an eight-game road trip a more confident team. The Kevin Garnett deal yielded Thaddeus Young, whose play has yielded immediate dividends. His 16 points and eight rebounds were vital in Saturday’s upset of Dallas, while Deron Williams led the way with 25 points and six assists, his highest scoring output since Nov. 7. Rookie Bogdan Bogdanovic returned to the Nets lineup after a three-game absence due to an ankle injury, so this is arguably the healthiest the Nets have been all season. They lost at Golden State 107-99 on Nov. 13, covering a 10.5-point spread.
•Suns @ Heat – 7:35 PM EST
The Suns followed up one of their best home wins of the season, Thursday’s OT thriller against OKC, with probably their worst effort, a 101-74 stinker against San Antonio. Blaming everything from a charity gala to a lack of fan support for their struggles, it was hard to explain how Phoenix scored just 24 points at halftime and 41 through three quarters. Markieff Morris said the crowd isn’t as vocal as they should be, a comment he won’t have to deal with for a while since this is the first of a four-game road swing. Eric Bldesoe was a -32 in his 31 minutes against the Spurs, but outplayed Russell Westbrook in the previous game. It’s a safe bet he’ll be motivated for this first matchup with former backcourt mate Goran Dragic. Brandon Knight was 0-for-6 in just 16 minutes on Saturday, leaving with a hip injury that’s got him questionable for this game. The Ft. Lauderdale native has averaged 18.5 points and five assists in his two visits to South Florida as a member of the Bucks, shooting 7-for-12 from 3-point range.
Dragic has been nursing a bad back, but it would take something far more significant to keep him out of this one, his first game against the franchise he’s played 388 career games for. Of course, he parted on awful terms, accusing the Suns front office of not doing right by him. They more than hinted he was a selfish malcontent and there won’t be kissing or making up any time soon. Hassan Whiteside had 14 points and 24 rebounds in Saturday night’s loss to Atlanta and remains the bright spot in an otherwise dreadful season for the Heat. Dwyane Wade dropped 22 points on the Hawks, his highest scoring output of February, looking like he had his lift back after dealing with hamstring trouble most of the month. The Heat upset the Suns in Phoenix on Dec. 9 behind Chris Bosh’s 34 points.
•Clippers @ Timberwolves – 8:05 PM EST
Chris Paul has put the Clippers on his back. While DeAndre Jordan has been a monster, too, but it was Paul who wrestled back a game that was getting away yesterday in Chicago, scoring or assisting on seven consecutive baskets to rally his team from a 58-51 third-quarter deficit. In the nine games Blake Griffin has missed, Paul is averaging 22 points and 14.1 assists, recording nine double-doubles. Jordan, in that same span, has clips of 16.3 points and 19.3 rebounds. L.A. is 6-3 without Griffin, whose return could come later this week. Matt Barnes (hamstring) and J.J. Redick (knee) are questionable here. The Clips are playing the second of a back-to-back for the first time since Feb. 9 and have won four of the last five in this situation. This will be the last leg of a four-game road trip.
Nikola Pekovic was able to get through just 12 minutes due to a sore right foot that is a major concern and might force him to miss this contest altogether. Rookie Andrew Wiggins comes off a 25-point night in Saturday’s loss to Memphis, continuing his Rookie of the Year campaign by punishing perhaps the league’s top defense. Kevin Garnett was ejected on Saturday night, but is still in a honeymoon period with Timberwolves fans who are simply thrilled to have him back. He bought 1,000 tickets to this game to give away to the general public. Rookie Adreian Payne has become a part of the frontcourt rotation, averaging 24.5 points, 6.2 points and 6.8 rebounds over his last four. Minnesota lost 127-101 at Staples on Dec. 1 and will play the Clippers on consecutive Mondays to open March.
•Pelicans @ Mavericks – 8:35 PM EST
New Orleans continues to defy expectations without Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson, improving to 5-0 with last night’s 99-92 win in Denver. Tyreke Evans led the way with 22 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, embracing taking over as the catalyst. Omer Asik finished with nine points and 16 rebounds in 22 minutes and has teamed with Alexis Ajinca to hold it down without Davis, who may come back late this week from a shoulder injury. Norris Cole has provided a boost in his five games since arriving from Miami, averaging 10.2 points and 3.8 assists. The Pelicans have only beaten one team with a winning record during this Davis-less stretch. Four of the five games have gone over the posted total.
Consecutive double-digit losses have temporarily dropped the Mavericks behind the Clippers into the No. 6 spot in the Western Conference. Tyson Chandler (hip) and Chandler Parsons (ankle) are listed as questionable with nagging injuries. Parsons has missed four games and Chandler has been absent two straight. Rajon Rondo had eight points, seven boards and six assists in his return from a one-game suspension for insubordination, but was lit up defensively by the Nets and continues to struggle making the transition to his new team. Dallas has played seven consecutive games that have gone under the posted total. This will be its final meeting of the season against Southwest Division rival New Orleans, who it has beaten in two of three.
