•Incredible Stat of the Day
Wizards head coach Randy Wittman is 23-8 Under in home games versus poor defensive teams (74.1%) with a shooting percent defense of less than 46% as the coach of Washington. The Wizards appeared to abandon their unselfish play in the opener of a home-and-home with the Boston Celtics and it cost them their winning streak. Wittman hopes it was only a temporary lapse. Washington seeks its fifth straight home win Monday night when it closes the set against Boston at Verizon Center.
The Wizards started slow Sunday in Boston, missing 14 of their first 18 shots and getting outscored 53-36 in the first half of a 101-93 loss. Washington trailed by 25 at one point before pulling within one on John Wall's layup with 1:12 left. They might have completed the comeback behind their usual brand of basketball, but the Wizards had just 21 assists, one of their lowest totals this season and 8.5 fewer than their average during a four-game winning streak preceding the loss. They also committed 19 turnovers after averaging 13.8 during the streak.

Monday's Week #7 Matchups
Systems Analyst Todd Smith
#501 BOSTON @ #502 WASHINGTON - 7:05 PM
The Boston Celtics look to beat the Washington Wizards for the second time in as many days as the two teams conclude their home-and-home set in the nation's capital on Monday. The Celtics had dropped six straight home games for the first time since the 2006-07 season before reeling off three straight wins at TD Garden, including a nervy 101-93 victory over the Wizards. Boston hopes to string together its first four-game winning streak and beat Washington for the 10th time in its last 13 tries.
The Wizards had won four games in a row before their setback to the Celtics on Sunday. Washington was down by as many as 23 points in the third quarter before storming back and pulling within one late in the game, but the rally fell short and it dropped to 4-4 on the road. The Wizards return home to the comfortable confines of the Verizon Center where they look to secure their fifth consecutive win and move back ahead of the streaking Atlanta Hawks at the top of the Southeast Division standings.
•ABOUT THE CELTICS (7-11 SU, 9-9-0 ATS): Rajon Rondo collected 13 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists versus Washington for his second triple-double of the season and the 31st of his career. Jeff Green scored a game-high 25 points against the Wizards and has poured in 25 or more in three of his last four outings. Marcus Thornton tallied a season-high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting in a reserve role on Sunday after combining for 13 in his previous two games.
•ABOUT THE WIZARDS (13-6 SU, 9-10-0 ATS): John Wall - who recorded 17 points, 14 assists, eight rebounds and three steals in the loss to the Celtics - has handed out 54 helpers in his last four games. Paul Pierce scored 16 points on Sunday to pass Indiana Pacers legend Reggie Miller for 16th place on the NBA all-time scoring list. Rasual Butler came off the bench to knock down five of his season-high six 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to ignite Washington's late rally.
#503 ATLANTA @ #504 INDIANA - 7:05 PM
The Atlanta Hawks are roping in victories and look for their seventh straight win when they visit the Indiana Pacers on Monday. Atlanta stretched the winning streak to six by delivering a 96-84 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday and now get a chance to beat the struggling Pacers for the second time this season. Indiana went 0-4 on a four-game road trip and is beginning a stretch in which four of five games are at home.
The Pacers haven’t forgotten their 102-92 loss to the Hawks on Nov. 1 and are aware of Atlanta’s array of players. “They’ve got shooters like Kyle Korver and they’ve got (Al) Horford in the paint,” Indiana guard C.J. Watson told reporters. “They rebound, they push, so it’s not just like a halfcourt team or a strictly transition team. They do a little of both and they’re pretty dangerous.” Forward Paul Millsap led the way with 23 points in Atlanta’s win over the Nuggets.
•ABOUT THE HAWKS (13-6 SU, 11-8-0 ATS): A veteran like Korver knows better than to get too excited in early December about the success or failure of a team. That includes his own squad, which is thus far exceeding the expectations most observers were placing on the team. “Every NBA game is tough, but we’ve had a favorable schedule to this point,” Korver told reporters. “We’ve gotten to play some teams that aren’t as high up in the standings as we’re going to play later.”
•ABOUT THE PACERS (7-13 SU, 12-7-1 ATS): Indiana announced Sunday that backup center Ian Mahinmi will be sidelined six to eight weeks after tearing his left plantar fascia during Friday’s loss to Sacramento. Mahinmi was providing solid defense and rebounding for the Pacers and forward Lavoy Allen will likely become the backup to center Roy Hibbert. Allen has just seven points in his last two games as his minutes were reduced when starters David West and Hibbert returned from ankle injuries.
#505 CLEVELAND @ #506 BROOKLYN - 7:35 PM
Cleveland can extend its winning streak to seven games for the first time since LeBron James' first stint with the team when it visits Brooklyn on Monday. The Cavaliers ran their current surge to six with an impressive 105-91 win at Toronto in the second half of a back-to-back set on Friday. James had 24 points and 13 assists as Cleveland's winning streak matched its longest since an eight-game run near the end of the 2009-10 season.
After surviving an overtime affair with San Antonio on Wednesday in the opener of a three-game homestand, the Nets offered little resistance in a 98-75 loss to Atlanta two nights later. Brook Lopez scored 20 points and Joe Johnson had 12 but no other Brooklyn player reached double figures. The Nets have gone 11 straight games without reaching 100 points within regulation after recording triple digits in six of their first seven contests.
•ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (11-7 SU, 8-10-0 ATS): James' 13 assists represent a season high and provides the latest example of how dangerous Cleveland can be when the superstar is distributing the basketball at an increased rate. He is averaging 10.2 assists during the winning streak, during which the Cavaliers have scored at least 105 points on five occasions. The four-time MVP has made only 4-of-20 3-pointers over the last five games but has 799 for his Cleveland career, four behind franchise leader Mark Price.
•ABOUT THE NETS (8-10 SU, 8-10-0 ATS): Lopez was the one bright spot in the loss to Atlanta but will miss at least four games due to a back strain. Brooklyn announced the injury Sunday and said that Lopez - who is averaging 19.7 points and 10.3 rebounds over his last three games - will be re-evaluated in a week. Kevin Garnett may slide to the center position while backups Mason Plumlee and Jerome Jordan figure to get a notable increase in playing time.
#507 DENVER @ #508 TORONTO - 7:35 PM
DeMar DeRozan is one of the leading scorers for the Toronto Raptors, but apparently it is his defense that the team misses the most. The Raptors will try to hold an opponent under 100 points for the first time since DeRozan went down with a groin injury when they host the Denver Nuggets on Monday. Including the game on Nov. 28 in which DeRozan was injured, Toronto has lost three of five while allowing an average of 110.6 points.
The Nuggets won seven of eight to get above .500 at 9-8 but have since dropped three straight as their offense struggles. Denver scored 101 or more points in eight straight games but failed to reach 90 in losses at Washington and Atlanta in the first two stops of a three-game trip. Wilson Chandler scored a season-high 29 points and Timofey Mozgov added 14 at Atlanta on Sunday but the rest of the starting five went 6-of-26 from the field in a 96-84 setback.
•ABOUT THE NUGGETS (9-11 SU, 8-11-1 ATS): Denver added forward Kenneth Faried to its growing injury list with a lower back strain and he sat out Sunday’s setback. J.J. Hickson moved into the starting lineup in Faried’s spot and hauled in nine rebounds but contributed only four points on 1-of-6 shooting while leaving the second unit without its primary rebounder. Ty Lawson found his way to 10 assists on Sunday but managed only four points on 1-of-10 shooting to end a string of seven straight double-doubles.
•ABOUT THE RAPTORS (15-5 SU, 12-8-0 ATS): Toronto suffered its worst loss of the season in a 105-91 home setback to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday and got its only positive sign from Amir Johnson, who posted a season-high 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting. "I feel like I have a little bit more bounce since I hurt myself in Orlando and it's a process," Johnson told reporters. "It's slowly getting better and better. Even though I'm still taking beatings, I feel good." Johnson was hurt on Nov. 1 and missed three games before slowly working himself back into shape and is 37-of-57 from the floor in the last six contests.
#509 GOLDEN STATE @ #510 MINNESOTA - 8:05 PM
The streaking Golden State Warriors look to remain hot and extend their franchise-record winning streak to 13 games when they visit the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. Golden State also will be looking for its sixth straight victory at Minnesota as well as improve on its gaudy 10-1 road mark. The Timberwolves are struggling with five straight losses and own the worst record in the Western Conference while the Warriors have the best record in the NBA.
Golden State was forecasted to have a good club but nobody was projecting it owning the top record in the league as the one-quarter pole approaches while also breaking in a first-year coach in Steve Kerr. “It’s good to have great players,” Kerr told reporters. “It’s my first job and I come into the league and inherit these guys.” Minnesota is beginning a four-game homestand and continues to play without starters Kevin Martin (wrist), Nikola Pekovic (wrist) and Ricky Rubio (ankle).
•ABOUT THE WARRIORS (17-2 SU, 13-6-0 ATS): A hamstring injury to David Lee opened the door for Draymond Green to be a starting forward and he has been superb while averaging 13.5 points per game. Despite a sprained thumb, Green set career highs with 31 points and seven 3-pointers in Saturday’s 112-102 road win over the Chicago Bulls and he’s also aware of the importance of the winning streak. “You’re talking about a franchise that was historically known for losing,” Green told reporters. “A new ownership group came in and it completely changes the entire organization. It’s a great feeling.”
•ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (4-15 SU, 7-11-1 ATS): Veteran guard Mo Williams (back) has missed the past two games and rookie Zach LaVine has drawn the starts at point guard and has been up to the task by averaging 19.5 points and seven assists. LaVine had 22 points and a season-best 10 assists in Saturday’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs and displayed promise earlier this season when he scored a season-high 28 points on 11-of-14 shooting against the Los Angeles Lakers. Also seeing extended playing time because of the injuries is forward Shabazz Muhammad, who has scored 18 or more points in four of the past five games.
#511 UTAH @ #512 SACRAMENTO - 10:05 PM
The Sacramento Kings will be without their best player for at least a little longer after DeMarcus Cousins was reportedly diagnosed with viral meningitis. The Kings will try to get by with the standout center when they host the Utah Jazz on Monday. Cousins has missed the last five games and was hospitalized last week while undergoing treatment and is expected to be out another 7-10 days, according to the USA Today Sports report.
The absence of Cousins is good news for the Jazz front line of Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors, who combined for 37 points and 18 rebounds as Utah’s losing streak hit eight games in a 98-93 home loss to the Orlando Magic on Friday. “Regardless of our long-term beliefs and commitment, there’s an immediacy with losing that’s difficult,” Utah coach Quin Snyder told reporters. “We live here in the moment, and in the moment losing is no fun.” Sacramento dropped a 105-96 decision to the Magic on Saturday and has lost five of six.
•ABOUT THE JAZZ (5-15 SU, 9-11-0 ATS): Utah is building for the future around Favors, Kanter, Gordon Hayward, Alec Burks and Trey Burke, and the inconsistency from the younger players is leading to uneven play during games. The Jazz fell into a double-digit hole at the half in each of the last four games and are coming up short while trying to battle back in the fourth quarter. “We can’t hang our heads or feel sorry for ourselves because we’re going to be in these situations and we’ve got to make them work to the best of our ability,” Snyder told reporters.
•ABOUT THE KINGS (10-10 SU, 11-9-0 ATS): Sacramento was one of the surprises of the first few weeks while jumping out to a 9-5 start but the loss of Cousins is hurting the team on both ends. The Kings are surrendering an average of 106.4 points in five games without Cousins and head coach Michael Malone is tinkering with the lineup to try to get the most out of the defense. “I was in search mode,” Malone told reporters after Saturday’s loss. “I was trying to find a group that could give us some life. We played very flat, very uninspired basketball, and I was just looking for a lineup, a group that could give us some life and a spark.”
#513 PHOENIX @ #514 LA CLIPPERS - 10:35 PM
Eric Bledsoe of the Phoenix Suns hasn’t had much luck in his last two visits to Staples Center to play the Los Angeles Clippers, the team he played for his first three NBA seasons. He’ll try to turn things around Monday when the Suns visit the Clippers for the second time this season. Bledsoe missed all six of his field-goal attempts and scored one point in a 13-point loss last month, and last December suffered a knee injury in his first visit to the Clippers and missed the next 2 ½ months.
The Clippers have won seven in a row and climbed atop the league lead in field-goal percentage and 3-point field-goal percentage after shooting 52.9 and converting 14-of-29 from beyond the arc in Saturday’s 20-point win against the visiting New Orleans Pelicans. J.J. Redick has scored at least 20 points in the last three games, a first for the nine-year shooting guard, and he’s 13-for-21 from long range in that span. The Suns could be getting some relief as guard Isaiah Thomas, who averages 15.5 points, could return after missing the last six games with a right ankle injury.
•ABOUT THE SUNS (12-9 SU, 11-9-1 ATS): Goran Dragic continues to look like the player he did last season when he averaged 20.3 points and shot 50.5 percent from the floor. He averaged just over 14 points through the first 17 games but is up to 24.2 in the last four. He took a step back from his exceptional three-game stretch with 13 points on 5-for-14 shooting in Saturday’s loss to the undermanned Houston Rockets, and has struggled in 22 career games against Los Angeles, averaging 11.5 points and shooting 43.1 percent from the field.
•ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (14-5 SU, 9-10-0 ATS): One reason Bledsoe and Dragic have likely struggled against the Clippers in recent games is they spend so much energy trying to stay in front of Chris Paul. The latter scored 32 points on 10-for-13 shooting and distributed nine assists when these teams met last month, and he’s been just as solid of late, shooting 14-for-23 the last two games with 26 assists and three turnovers. Paul is on pace to lead the league in assist-to-turnover ratio for a third straight season.
