OC Dooley:
“2 UNIT” COLLEGE BASKETBALL LATE NIGHT LINETRACKER SIDE (Loyola-Marymount +1 at home versus Pepperdine in a 9:00 pm eastern tipoff): The oddsmakers made a loud statement in this West Coast Conference league opener which at most offshore locations “was” at a virtual “pick em” spot. While Pepperdine (7-4) for the most part enjoyed the “non” league portion of their schedule Loyola-Marymount (4-8) struggled even though their head coach is the same Mike Dunlap who used to hold the same position in the NBA with Charlotte. As previously mentioned tonight’s money-line being at near a pick-em is surprising when you consider Pepperdine has been an outstanding investment (7-2 overall against the spread) especially on the ROAD (5-0 ATS). The problem with tonight’s visiting side is the offense which has been held to “53 or less” points twice in the past 3 outings. In a recent early season tournament tilt the DEFENSE of Loyola-Marymount gave up just 50 points even though being extended into overtime versus an opponent (Nebraska) from a “power” conference. In the entire coaching career of Mike Dunlap his teams (including Loyola-Marymount) when facing a quality opponent (60-to-80 win percentage) have successfully COVERED the spread at an amazing 14-2 clip. In this west coast rivalry series where the schools are located just 19 miles apart Pepperdine has won four in a row but 3 different times the tilts have been decided by a close margin of “three or less” points
