Monday's Lineup
25 Dime ---- VERMONT
10 Dime ---- CLIPPERS
5 Dime ---- TIMBERWOLVES
VERMONT --- Yes, one week after I went against them, I’m back to tell you this team made a believer out of me. They would have likely represented mid-major conferences better than some did had they been invited to the Big Dance. Vermont is coming off an impressive 76-72 win AT Wisconsin Green Bay… and that was WITH Terry Evans back in the lineup for the Phoenix.
The Catamounts have proven themselves worthy to me, especially when I look at their road record (10-3) this season and the fact they are now 24-8 on the season. What scares me most about OSU is the fact they beat a poor-shooting Houston team by just four in the first round because their shot selection was atrocious, yet they are giving a point or two tonight. The Beavers are a pitiful 14-17 on the season, but because they play in the Pac 10, they were invited to play.
VU is 4-0 ATS in their last four in the role of road pup, not to mention the fact they are 6-1 in their last seven vs. non-conference opponents. OSU is a money-burning 1-4 ATS in their last four and 0-6 ATS in their last six as a favorite. Vermont, to me, is an easy play and should easily cover this deflated line.
LA CLIPPERS --- Yes, I realize this might be the worst team in the NBA facing one of the league's elite, so please don't think I'm touting the fact that I think the Clippers are better, because I simply don't. I just happen to believe we're getting pretty good line value here and wouldn't want to pass up the opportunity for a cheap, yet effective, cover tonight.
There's absolutely no question who the better team is, but to ask them to win this game by 16 or more points is asking a bit much after their recent showings. Aside from an 18-point win over Memphis, the Celtics haven't beaten a team by that many since a Feb. 23 rout of Denver. And if you look at their entire body of work, you see that the Celtics bring their "A-game" when it matters most, not against a team like the Clippers.
Boston is just 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games overall and 1-9 ATS in their last 10 home games. Dreadful. The Clippers won the only other meeting this year between the two, so they proved they can at least hang with the defending champs. No reason to think they can't hang around again tonight. Prediction: Celtics 106 Clippers 97.
TIMBERWOLVES --- I happen to like this scrappy bunch, even without star C Al Jefferson. I like the way they play. I like the way they hustle to every loose ball. It's that type of play that makes it easy to back them, especially when they are getting this many points.
Yes, I'm aware that the Hawks have lost just seven times at home this season, and I know how well they've played against the Vegas number lately (12-2 overall ATS and 11-1 ATS last 12 at home). So many people are going to be all over the Hawks today because of those numbers, but that's one of the many reasons I'm jumping on the underdog here.
The Wolves have lost by 12 or more just twice in their last 10 games, and despite a four-game losing streak, this team is more than capable of going on a run when they play teams that aren't really defensive-intensive. Kevin Love is starting to figure out how to play center on this team, and you can bet he'll perform better tonight than in his last outing. Take the points with Minnesota on the road.
