3* MLB Total Dominator on A's/Angels UNDER
I look for tonight's showdown between the A's and Angels to finish well below the mark of 7 runs set for the total. Oakland will be sending out Jon Lester, who has gone 3-1 with a 2.60 ERA over 5 starts since being traded to the A's from Boston. One of those starts included a matchup against the Angels, where he allowed just 1 run on 5 hits over 7 innings of a 1-2 loss.
The Angels counter with their ace Jered Weaver, who has allowed 3 earned runs or less in 10 of his last 13 starts. Weaver did just give up 3 runs on 8 hits in 6 2/3 innings at Oakland, but he's a much better pitcher at home. Weaver has a 3.72 ERA and 1.233 WHIP overall and a 2.89 ERA and 1.097 WHIP at home.
The UNDER is 29-9 in Weaver's last 38 home starts against a division opponent, 4-1 in his last 5 following a quality start and 43-17-3 in his last 63 s tarts at home with a total set at 7 to 8.5 runs. The UNDER is also 20-4-3 in Weaver's last 27 starts against the Athletics and 25-10-3 in the last 38 meetings between these two teams in Los Angeles. These trends combine to form a massive 75% (121-41-9) system in favor of the UNDER!

4* NCAAF Friday Night No Limit ATS Smash on UTSA +11.5
Don't let Houston's 59-28 win over UTSA last season fool you. That was a much closer game than the final score would indicate. Going into the 4th quarter Houston only had a 31-28 advantage. UTSA fell apart and turned it over 5 times in the final period to allow the Cougars to turn this into a blowout.
That loss couldn't have sat well with the Roadrunners and I look for them to come out extremely motivated for revenge. I don't know if they will have enough to win outright, but I'm confident they will keep it within single digits.
One of things I love about UTSA is they are going to be one of the most experienced teams in the country with 20 returning starters (10 offense, 10 defense). Where I'm expecting the biggest improvements is on the defensive side of the ball. Getting back all those starters who are famil iar with Houston's offensive attack and the extra preparation they had for this matchup with it being the first game of the season should allow them to keep the Cougars in check.
UTSA is 7-1 ATS in their last 8 road games and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games. Take the Roadrunners!

MLB Betting News and Notes - Week #22
•Masterson Considers Abandoning Windup: When Justin Masterson went to the bullpen at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park on Wednesday to ready for his next start, he and the Cardinals coaches believed a solution for his continued struggles would be found first by asking a question: How could he make everything simpler? The answer is creative, and they’re eager to see if it’s curative. “For the most part, I was pitching out of the windup, and things would get better out of the stretch at times,” Masterson said at his locker in the visitors’ clubhouse at PNC Park on Wednesday. “So we simplified it. I went only out of the stretch (in the bullpen). Less moving parts. You don’t have to worry about step back, turn around, ready to throw. We’re simplifying, really simplifying.”

The Cardinals have guaranteed Masterson, who they acquired from Cleveland at the July trade deadline, another start this Saturday. Masterson said he expects to pitch the afternoon game of the doubleheader. He said he intends to abandon the windup and throw out of the stretch — as a pitcher usually only does when a runner is on base. While working on the change Wednesday morning, Masterson said he didn’t feel like he was sacrificing any velocity or movement on his fastball by doing so. He just felt his delivery was more streamlined. “It doesn’t take away from our power,” the sinkerballer said. “Guys throw just as hard either way. When it comes to the timing, we got to talking and maybe you should just make it simpler.”

Masterson is 2-2 with a 7.43 ERA in five starts since joining the Cardinals. He has allowed at least four runs in each of four starts, and the only night he’s felt completely in synch with his mechanics was when he threw seven shutout innings at Miami. That night, he described how he had several “checkpoints” — or points of reference — in his delivery that he kept returning to consistently. One of them was remaining steady over his back leg and not breaking forward or rushing toward the plate. It’s a checkpoint he said he didn’t hit in his most recent start. Masterson allowed five runs on six hits and two walks at Philadelphia in a game the Cardinals lost, 7-1. It was the second time he’s had a start of three or fewer innings, though it’s the seven-inning win at Miami that manager Mike Matheny said keeps the Cardinals optimistic.

“We know it’s there, it’s just repeating, repeating, repeating,” Matheny said. “What is getting in the way of not repeating? It’s the same thing when I work with catchers. What are the little things that I can chip away that are extra movement. Just chipping. It’s chipping away the little things that are causing the inconsistency.” For Masterson that means stripping away the way a majority of pitchers around baseball deliver the first pitch of every inning — from the windup. He mentioned how Texas righty Yu Darvish will go stretches without using the windup, and there are pitchers in Asia’s pro leagues that throw from the stretch. Relievers sometimes abandon the windup when searching for timing. “This is a good opportunity for me here,” Masterson said. “I need to get this right. It’s not rocket science. It goes back to what’s the simplest way to try and get a ball to the plate. For us, this is it.”

•Gomes Could Return To Indians Friday: It isn't official yet, but it looks like starting catcher Yan Gomes will be ready to get back in the lineup for the Cleveland Indians on Friday in Kansas City. If so, that means backup catcher Roberto Perez will go back to playing sparingly. Perez, however, continued to make a good impression on manager Terry Francona in the seven games he's played with Gomes on the seven-day disabled list. The Indians went 4-3 with Perez behind the plate and he hit .250 during that time, including a 1-for-4 performance in a 3-2 win against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night to decide a three-game series.

"I think he's done tremendous," Francona said. "It's kind of a cool story. His whole minor league career, he was always known for being such a good defensive catcher and really had a good reputation for running a game and being a good teammate, and all of a sudden things offensively started to fall together and he's a threat when he's at the plate. And as a backup catcher, that's hard because you're not playing much anyway." Perez made his major league debut July 10 with the Indians, who selected him in the 33rd round of the 2008 first-year player draft. In 19 games, he's hitting .278 with a home run and four RBIs. He's also put down (five) sacrifice bunts, which has also impressed Francona.

"He's a pretty alert kid and for a guy who maybe doesn't look the part, he's a really good bunter," Francona said. "He gets the ball down. I think we're pretty fortunate." As for Gomes, Francona said the final determination about whether he'll face the Royals on Friday will happen after the Indians go through their pre-game routine. "I would think (he'll play)," Francona said. "We'll obviously reserve the right to get him on the flight (Thursday night) and we'll let him get through all his (work Thursday) and then we'll probably even wait and let him get through pre-game, just because there's no reason not to. Then we'll do something." Cleveland will have to make a corresponding roster move at that point.

•Braves' Venters Headed For 3rd Tommy John Surgery: Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez figured the news might be bad for Jonny Venters when the left-handed pitcher went to visit Dr. James Andrews this week. Still, the official news Thursday that Venters has torn the UCL in his left elbow for a third time -- and will likely need a third Tommy John surgery if he wants to pitch again -- left Gonzalez shaken. "I feel for the young man," Gonzalez said before the Braves' 6-1 win over the New York Mets at Citi Field. "I called and left a message. I'm sure we'll see him on the homestand (which begins Friday) and see what his decision is in the next couple days." Venters previously underwent Tommy John surgeries to fix his UCL in October 2005 and May 2013. He missed the 2006 season while recovering from the first procedure and battled left elbow problems throughout the 2008 season. This recovery was even more laborious, which is why Gonzalez feared the worst.

"We couldn't get him (over) the hump -- that's what (trainer) Bubba (Porter) said, there's got to be something," Gonzalez said. "We didn't ramp him up much. It was playing catch and throwing some sides. He was probably at 50, 60, 70 percent." Venters will be facing some long odds if he undergoes a third Tommy John surgery and embarks upon another comeback. Jason Isringhausen and Jose Rijo are believed to be the only pitchers to appear in the majors following a third Tommy John operation. "You hate for players to get hurt," Gonzalez said. "And he's a young guy. He's not even 30 years old. In the middle of (his) career." Venters last pitched for the Braves on Oct. 5, 2012, when he appeared in the National League wild card game against the St. Louis Cardinals. He pitched in an NL-high 85 games in 2011, when he struck out 96 batters in 88 innings, earned five saves and made the All-Star team.

•Tanaka, Yankees Hoping Gamble Pays Off: It was a gamble then and it remains a gamble whether right-hander Masahiro Tanaka will be able to return and help the New York Yankees down the stretch of an injury-speckled season. Tanaka threw a 49-pitch simulated game prior to Thursday's real game between New York and host Detroit. It went well, if you listen to the batter he faced, infielder Brendan Ryan. It didn't go so well, listening to a translated assessment from Tanaka. The pitcher was placed on the disabled list July 9, diagnosed with a partial elbow ligament tear. The Yankees and Tanaka decided to try rest and rehabilitation over season-ending Tommy John surgery, a decision that could be a "whew" if it works and a big "oops" if surgery becomes necessary anyway because it would sideline the rookie star Japanese pitcher for a calendar year. "Right now, I'm just trying to get back," Tanaka said. "It feels like it (his stuff) wasn't there. But there was no pain."

Ryan hit from both sides of the plate as Tanaka got his innings and pitches in. "He threw some really good sliders," Ryan said. "His splitter was moving. His control will be better as he comes along. "He could go out and get outs right now just on his stuff alone." Manager Joe Girardi is careful to keep expectations for Tanaka on the low side. He wants to see his right-hander build up to the point where he can throw 75-90 pitches without complaint, either on the day he pitches or thereafter. That will probably take two more sessions. New York has survived the loss of four of the five starters it opened the season with and is still on the fringes of making it to the one-game postseason knockout game or better. Having Tanaka available to help would definitely enhance the Yankees' chances. "I can't be concerned about the future," Tanaka said. "I've got to take it day by day." So do the Yankees. Like Tanaka, they will do so with their fingers crossed.

Around The League
--The Kansas City Royals added Jayson Nix into the mix on Thursday as they acquired the veteran journeyman infielder off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Nix, who will likely join the club Saturday, hit .133 with one home run and three RBIs in 34 games this season with the Philadelphia Phillies and Pirates. He also hit .272 in 55 games with Durham, the Tampa Bay Rays' Triple-A affiliate. Nix, 32, has a .214 batting average in 459 games over seven years in the majors. When he arrives, probably Saturday, the Royals will have to make a roster move to put him on the 25-man roster.

--Right-fielder Alex Rios is out of the Texas Rangers’ lineup for the second consecutive game because of soreness in the right thumb. Rios said he wanted to play, but manager Ron Washington decided to be prudent and hold him out of the lineup for one more game. Washington expects to have Rios in the lineup on Friday against Houston left-hander Brett Oberholtzer.

--RHP Joakim Soria continues to stretch out his throwing program in his rehab from a left oblique strain, but the Tigers have no timetable on his return. Soria threw off flat ground Tuesday and Wednesday, and is scheduled to stretch out his throws Friday in Chicago. From there, he could progress to throwing off a mound, though there's no schedule for that just yet. There had been some hope last week that Soria wouldn't need much more than the minimum 15-day stay on the disabled list, something team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski told MLB Network radio last Friday. When Soria originally went on the DL Aug. 10, the hope was that he'd miss 2-3 weeks.

--Outfielder Nolan Reimold is headed to his third team this year after the Arizona Diamondbacks claimed him off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. Reimold started the season with the Baltimore Orioles and was on the disabled list after surgery on a herniated disk in his neck before he was designated for assignment on July 1. The 30-year-old was picked up off waivers by the Blue Jays on July 6. In 22 games for the Blue Jays this year, Reimold batted .212 with two home runs and nine RBIs. He has a .250 career average with 43 homers and 135 RBIs in six seasons with the Orioles and Blue Jays.
