THE FALL MIRACLE
UTAH (+10) over ALABAMA
There’s no such thing as a road game in the bowls. But still at first glance this may seem like quite a “road” game for Utah, as the New Orleans superdome will surely be filled with a vast majority of Alabama fans from the south. I personally attended the 2004 Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona where Alex Smith and the Utah Utes destroyed Pittsburgh. There were about 70,000 fans in the stadium that night, and at least 67,000 were wearing red.
Alabama still has that “#1” status lingering over their heads, as it seems here they’ve been given a pass for losing to Florida since the game was relatively close. Let’s take a look at some of the teams Alabama beat handily this season: Arkansas State, Western Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Auburn. What do they all have in common? No bowls. They were doubled up in yardage and really should have lost at home vs. Tulane, and only beat Ole Miss, LSU and Kentucky by a combined 13 points. There’s no doubt they’re a tough team and Nick Saban has excelled with his coaching motivation this season, but they aren’t a top 5 team and they really never were at any point. Plus, quarterback JP Wilson is a world away from Bradford, Tebow, McCoy and the likes, and I’d even take Utah’s Brad Johnson any day. Alabama has a good defense, but Utah’s defense has been plenty impressive to complement the offensive firepower. They held BYU’s Max Hall to 200 yards passing, and held Air Force to an unbelievable season low of 55 yards rushing, which is a major accomplishment considering few teams were able to stop their triple option this year. Contrary to popular opinion, this is not like last year’s Hawaii-Georgia matchup where Hawaii came in undefeated as a 10 point dog and got crushed. Utah is far superior to last year’s Hawaii team. Besides, what does Alabama have to play for that’s more important than Utah finishing undefeated? (Think of Boise-Oklahoma a few years back).
Not only did Utah defeat TCU, they crushed BYU and defeated the team that beat USC. Although Alabama is probably more physical the Utes will not be intimidated and can matchup with Alabama on both sides of the ball, and with a record of 19-1 with senior QB Brian Johnson starting behind center and that 1 loss by 7 points at BYU, they won’t be losing this one by double digits regardless of how hard Saban is screaming on the sidelines.
Alabama 21, Utah 20
Play on: UTAH
