5 DIME National League - It's very hard to go against this unit, as the components are in place for an easy win. You think of all nostalgia that is Major League Baseball, and arguably, you can say it runs right through Busch Stadium.
Honestly, I don't know how much the American League's big-name hurlers will be able to challenge the sluggers of the senior circuit this season. I am much more impressed with the lineup of the National League this season, and the youngsters who are on this team.
It starts and ends with St. Louis' hometown hero Albert Pujols, who fizzled in the home run derby, and will be aching to shine tonight. He is leading the majors in home runs (32), RBIs (87) and among the batting leaders (.332). He’s a legitimate Triple Crown threat.
And let me tell you something, this National League rotation is just as strong as its lineup.
Honestly, I'd much rather put my money in the hands of NL starter Tim Lincecum than AL starter Roy Halladay.
The 2008 National League’s Cy Young Award winner closed out the first half of the season with four straight wins and is 6-1 with a 1.45 ERA in his last seven starts, giving up just nine earned runs and striking out 58 in 56 innings during this stretch. Halladay, on the other hand, struggled a tad over his final three starts, after spending two weeks on the disabled list, going 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA.
Sure, I know they won't be in this game that long, but it's all about starting off with momentum and it's all about carrying that momentum into the latter innings. If there were ever a year the streak is coming to an end, ever a year we were going to see the senior circuit come to life to win this midsummer classic - this is the year.
