Disagree, events. sponsors, advertisers would not take a major financial hit if Serena is suspended from a major.
They still have Safina and others to promote, not to mention Nadal, Federer, etc. etc. who participate in the same events on the mens side.
How many viewers would not tune in if Serena was not involved in a major?
Serena does not drive tennis, tennis would survive just fine with or without her.

Any kind of suspension from major events will cost sponsors, organizers and television advertisers millions of dollars. All of the above would be harmed far more by a suspension than would Williams.

her being suspended from a major would have 0 impact of any of the above.

the sport is too global and the 4 places that the majors are played will be packed and people who watch tennis on tv will still watch.

if you think she has such an impact on the sport , where are all the new black players on the tour ? she has been around for 10 years , plenty of time to have had an impact...

After this incident, there are plenty of people more apt to tune in
if Serena *isn't* playing.

gimme a break... the only people that might not show up if serena was suspended at a major would be her entourage of fat ass family members.

but in reality , they would still be flying first class on venus's dime...

can you just imagine the uproar at the aussie open next january if serena isnt there... they might have to cancel..

hardly...

Major advertisers and media contractually demand certain players to be part of the lineup for their events, when we're discussing tennis or golf.

All such events begin business negotiation with a list of who is going to participate on the field of play. A tourney without Tiger Woods will not be able to get as high a television advertising rate as one where he is not present. Williams is on this level in the world of tennis.

If an anticipated player were withheld for reasons other than injury, the advertisers and promoters are now receiving an inferior product. And you can be sure that rates and pricing would be reduced in proportion to the impact level of said player.

Advertising rates would be reduced if a player the calibre of Williams was obstructed from particpating.

If you believe otherwise, then it's more understandable why you might forsee a suspension as being possible.

disagree... roger federer is , she isnt.

were talking womens tennis here and were talking majors .

i would totally agree with you if the topic were the pilot pen or the sony event in miami . those advertisers would have a beef.

she's missed some majors in past and i'd be willing to bet the event and sponsors didnt miss a beat.

Perhaps.

Or perhaps there's an increase in viewers when she DOES play because they hope they might see her have another outburst.

As noted early on in this here thread, since at least the 1970s, tennis has drawn some of it's most active viewership from people wanting to see Connors, McEnroe, Natase, Williams et al get loose and lose their temper.

Unless I've missed something (me being a very casual observer of the sport), high ranked players who "do" have outbursts and angry displays are a key attraction for a significant portion of the general spectator base.

I'd be interested in seeing Nielsen's from the four majors in the past ten years or so comparing those ratings when Serena was involved in a semi or final match as opposed to when she was not.
I am willing to bet even money the difference in those ratings are not that far off.

Dig it....Her outburst on a tennis court directly influenced a half dozen otherwise football fanatics to burn a collective half hour or more typing rapid fire posts into an internet sports forum while watching the Bears/Packers.

That's some decent pull...heh

I can multi task, I can watch a 3-2 football game and post my opinions on an internet message board at the same time.
Hell, on a good day I can even walk and chew gum at the same time as well.

But wait....There's no way a good right-thinking classy guy like yourself would continue to watch the event after such shameless behavior by a major participant....I'm not buying it

John Lennon. Incredible song writer and composer, but the guy had the vocal talent of dryer lint.
