The way I look at this game is to just let the bowl games play out and see how each conference teams performed in the bowls. To me, your team is only as good as your conference. Whether Florida or OU have been playing quality opponents or not won't be known until they go up against other conferences. When I look at this game on paper I would obviously give the advantage to Florida. They've been great on both sides of the ball this season. But keep in mind that in 2006 Ohio State also had some very impressive numbers, and looked much the best on paper over Florida. But as we all found out, OSU's impressive record was a result of weak competetion. I think the biggest question surrounding this game is are the numbers skewed for each team? Here's how it breaks down:
First in reference to OU's defensive play. Here are the offenses that they've had to deal with this season: Texas Tech #4, Missouri #6, OSU #7, Texas #9, Nebraska #12 and Kansas #23. And on top of this, OU has been up by many points in these games and have played their second unit players throughout the second half of many of these games when most of the yardage and scores have been put up on OU.
OU is #65 on defense this year. But the question is how much would this defense move up if they were playing in the SEC where there is a lot of bad offensive teams and QB play? My hunch is the Sooners would be in the top 20 in defense if they were in the SEC. Hell, Texas has the number #50 defense. And there is no way this team is the 50th best defense in the country.
Florida is ranked #9 in total defense. But let's look at some of the offenses they've faced. Georgia #21, Ole Miss #37, Arkansas #53, LSU #54, Florida State #55, Alabama #56, South Carolina #96, Tennessee #115 and Vandy #117.
So obviousdly this leads to the question of is Floirda's defense really that good, or the product of playing horrible offensive teams with bad QB's?
And is OU's defense that bad, or is it because they have played some of the best offenses in the country with by far the best QB's?
Bottom line is we can talk about these two teams all we want here, but we won't know for sure about which of these two conferences are better until we start playing these bowl games.
Not really a legit comparison as UF's second team defense was in early in the 3rd Q for most of the season. If you look at the ydg and points given up by the first team, those number start to look really strong. Same with the offense. UF scored a ton of points, but Tebow came out by mid-end of 3rd for most of the games.
I'm like the rest of you - tired of this argument already. No one will agree no matter what. Just play the game.
