Charlie Maxwell is incorrect in saying that Tom Smith never regained prominence after Seabiscuit retired. He went to work for Elizabeth Arden Graham, the comsmetic queen. In Nov. of 1945 one of his grooms sprayed a decongestant up the nose of one of Smith's and Graham's horses. To make a long story short, Smith although not present, recieved a years suspension. Mrs. Graham hired his son to take his place for the year, when he came back, she rehired him immediately, and he trained a horse named Jet Pilot for Graham and won the 1947 Kentucky Derby with him. The controversy cost him being inducted into the racing Hall of Fame until more than 40 years after his death.
