Preview: Rays at Yankees

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (66-68) at New York Yankees (75-58)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 1:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
LINE: 163, -177 TOTAL: 8.5

The New York Yankees’ current lineup won’t be confused with the Murderer’s Row of old, but they’ve looked the part lately. The Yankees have slugged eight home runs in their past two games and hope to continue the power surge in the second of a three-game series with the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

Three blasts accounted for all of New York’s scoring in a 5-2 victory Friday – the Yankees’ third straight win and their sixth in seven games. New York has inched within a half game of American League East leader Toronto, while Tampa Bay has dropped two straight as it tries to stay alive in the crowded race for the second wild card. Yankees right-hander Nathan Eovaldi looks to run his unbeaten streak to 14 starts when he faces the Rays, who are one of only two teams to hand him losses this season. The Yankees lead the season series 9-5 and have won five of seven meetings at home.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Matt Moore (1-3, 8.78 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Nathan Eovaldi (14-2, 4.17)

Moore is back following a month-long stint at Triple-A Durham, where he went 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA in five starts. The Rays hope the 26-year-old has sorted out the difficulties that plagued him in his return from Tommy John surgery, when he issued 13 walks in 26 2/3 innings and failed to record a quality start in six outings. Moore is 5-2 with a 3.83 ERA in nine meetings against New York.

Eovaldi has enjoyed great run support all season and it hit a new level in his last outing, as he allowed five runs over five innings but earned the win in a 20-6 rout of Atlanta. The 25-year-old has won nine straight decisions dating to a June 16 loss at Miami. Eovaldi gave up four runs over 7 1/3 innings in a loss at Tampa Bay on May 12 – his only previous start against the Rays.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York 1B Greg Bird’s four career home runs have come in bunches – he homered twice Aug. 19 against Minnesota and has gone deep in each of the past two games.

2. Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria has belted four home runs in his past four games after hitting only one in his previous 20 contests.

3. The Yankees are 70-0 this season – and 139-2 over the past two seasons – when leading after eight innings.

Preview: Orioles at Blue Jays

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (65-69) at Toronto Blue Jays (76-58)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 1:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Baltimore Orioles played their way out of wild-card contention over the last few weeks but are still in a position to effect the race in the American League East. The Orioles will continue to make it tough on their rivals when they visit the Toronto Blue Jays for the second of a three-game series on Saturday.

Baltimore dropped 12 of 13 games before recovering to win its last two, including a 10-2 triumph in the first game of the series on Friday. Chris Davis powered the Orioles offense with a pair of home runs and has five blasts in his last three games to pull out of a lengthy slump. No team can match the power of the Blue Jays’ offense, but Toronto failed to homer in the opener and fell for just the third time in the last 13 games, trimming their lead over the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East to a half-game. The Blue Jays should not need more than a few runs on Saturday, when ace David Price faces off against Baltimore right-hander Mike Wright.

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), SNET (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Mike Wright (2-3, 4.99 ERA) vs. Blue Jays LH David Price (13-5, 2.47)

Wright (calf strain) was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Friday and will be kept on a strict pitch count after making his final rehab start on Tuesday. The 25-year-old struggled in his last three major-league starts, going 0-3 while allowing a total of 14 runs in 10 1/3 innings. The final start in that stretch came at Toronto on June 19, when Wright was ripped for four runs on three hits and four walks in 1 1/3 innings.

Price has been everything the Blue Jays expected since being acquired from the Detroit Tigers, with six quality starts in as many outings. The former Cy Young Award winner suffered his first loss with Toronto by yielding three runs on six hits in seven innings on Monday. Price struck out 12 against Baltimore on July 18 and allowed one run in seven innings but suffered the loss as the Orioles beat the Tigers 3-0.

WALK-OFFS

1. Davis is the first Orioles player to reach 40 home runs in multiple seasons.

2. Toronto RHP Marcus Stroman (left knee surgery) will make his final rehab start on Monday before joining the bullpen.

3. Baltimore placed RHP Miguel Gonzalez (shoulder) on the 15-day DL.

Preview: Diamondbacks at Cubs

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (65-70) at Chicago Cubs (76-57)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 2:20 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: 201, -220 N/A TOTAL: N/A

Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta looks to join Johnny Vander Meer in the record books when he takes the mound for the second of a three-game series against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday. Arrieta gets the ball for the first time since tossing his first career no-hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday as the Cubs try for a second straight victory.

Chicago belted four home runs in a 14-5 rout of Arizona on Friday and is in position to end a streak of three straight series losses. The Cubs’ rookies continue to produce, as Javier Baez went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs and Addison Russell homered twice and drove in three in the series opener. The Cubs might not need nearly as much offense behind Arrieta, who hopes to match Vander Meer’s unduplicated feat of tossing back-to-back no-hitters in 1938. He might have a tough time cooling off the Diamondbacks, who have scored four or more runs in six straight games and recorded double-digit hits in five of those contests.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (3-10, 3.72 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (17-6, 2.11)

Ray has had a difficult second half, losing his last six decisions while posting a 5.62 ERA over his past eight starts. The 23-year-old has seen his ERA rise more than 1 1/2 runs since the All-Star break, when he had a 2.16 ERA. Ray has been much better on the road (3-5, 2.64 ERA) than at home (0-5, 5.60).

Arrieta won all six of his starts in August, posting an 0.43 ERA and holding opponents to a .130 batting average. The 29-year-old won 11 of his last 12 decisions and has recorded 14 consecutive quality starts. Arrieta endured one of his rockier outings of the season at Arizona on May 23, allowing six runs – three earned – over six innings in a no-decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. Russell is the 12th Cubs player this season with a multi-homer game, including four rookies.

2. Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt is expected to rejoin the team Saturday after missing two games to be with his wife, Amy, for the birth of their first child.

3. Cubs C/LF Kyle Schwarber sat out Friday and will miss a minimum of 3-5 games with a mild ribcage strain.

Preview: Brewers at Reds

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (58-75) at Cincinnati Reds (55-77)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: 106, -115 N/A TOTAL: N/A

Matt Garza will look to avoid becoming the first pitcher in the majors to reach the 15-loss plateau on Saturday as the Milwaukee Brewers begin a 10-game road trip with a doubleheader versus the Cincinnati Reds. Garza, who is tied with Philadelphia veteran Aaron Harang with a league-high 14 defeats, was blasted for seven runs and 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings before escaping with a no-decision in Cincinnati's 12-9 victory on last Saturday.

The 31-year-old Garza would be wise to keep a keen eye on Jay Bruce, who belted a two-run homer on Saturday and is 11-for-30 (.367) with three homers and nine RBIs in his career versus the hurler. The Reds have won three of five after losing 13 of their previous 14, while the Brewers completed a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh on Thursday to make it four wins in a row before getting rained out in the series opener. Jonathan Lucroy is 19-for-43 (.442) with 11 runs scored during his career-high 11-game hitting streak while Jean Segura is 10-for-22 (.455) with four RBIs and six runs scored in his last five games. Cincinnati's John Lamb will pitch the opener and teammate Keyvius Sampson will work in the nightcap against Wily Peralta.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Matt Garza (6-14, 5.56 ERA) vs. Reds LH John Lamb (0-3, 5.24)

Garza has been blitzed for 19 runs on 27 hits and seven walks in his last three outings (13 1/3 innings), resulting in an 0-2 record in the process. The veteran has been taken deep in each of his last six games and 23 times in 25 appearances this season. The rainout allowed Garza to avoid pitching at night, as he is 1-9 mark while allowing the opposition to bat .317 against him.

Lamb is searching for his first major-league win despite allowing just two runs on five hits in six innings against Milwaukee on Sunday. The 25-year-old fanned eight in that contest and has a 29-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in August. While Lamb hasn't struggled with his control, he has been taken deep in each of his four outings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto is 11-for-20 with three homers, eight RBIs and six runs scored during his six-game hitting streak.

2. Milwaukee 3B Hernan Perez is 5-for-10 with two RBIs in his last three contests.

3. Reds SS Eugenio Suarez went 4-for-12 with two homers and four RBIs to help his team take two of three from the Chicago Cubs.

Preview: Pirates at Cardinals

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (80-53) at St. Louis Cardinals (86-48)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: 133, -144 TOTAL: 7.5

Starling Marte is starting to heat up after a cold spell, and the Pittsburgh Pirates would like to follow suit. After driving in three runs in the opener, Marte looks to maintain his hot hand as the visiting Pirates attempt to climb back into contention for the National League Central title when they continue their three-game series versus the first-place St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday afternoon.

Marte collected three hits in Friday's 9-3 triumph and is 6-for-14 in his last three contests after a brutal 0-for-17 stretch in his previous five. The 26-year-old Dominican traditionally has feasted on St. Louis pitching (49-for-157, .312) but will face Saturday starter Jaime Garcia for the first time in his career. While Pittsburgh snapped its four-game skid, the Cardinals have dropped two in a row after winning nine of 10 and saw their lead over the Pirates shrink to 5 1/2 games. Rookie Stephen Piscotty is 20-for-47 (.426) with 11 RBIs during his career-best 11-game hitting streak.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FS1, ROOT (Pittsburgh), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Charlie Morton (8-6, 4.22 ERA) vs. Cardinals LH Jaime Garcia (7-4, 2.03)

Morton has dropped two straight starts and carries a dismal 2-10 career record and 5.58 ERA versus St. Louis into Saturday's start. The 31-year-old pitched well in the last meeting, however, allowing just one hit over seven scoreless innings before settling for a hard-luck no-decision. Morton has kept the ball in the park in three straight outings and six of his last seven.

Garcia improved to 4-0 in his last six starts on Sunday despite allowing four runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings of a 7-5 triumph over San Francisco. The 29-year-old has yielded just nine earned runs and 31 hits during that stretch (39 innings). Like Morton, Garcia has kept the ball in the park throughout much of the season, including in each of his last six starts and 10 of his last 12.

WALK-OFFS

1. St. Louis 1B Brandon Moss is 13-for-28 with four homers, seven RBIs and as many runs scored during his eight-game hitting streak.

2. Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen has recorded 10 multi-hit performances in his last 16 contests.

3. Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is 10-for-24 during his six-game hitting streak.

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (53-82) at Boston Red Sox (62-72)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: 186, -203 TOTAL: 9.5

The Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies are both looking toward the future, and right now it looks like the Red Sox are on the better track. The Phillies will try to get their youth to shine and even the series at one win apiece when they host Boston on Saturday.

The Red Sox made the decision to give their young players plenty of chances down the stretch and the results have been outstanding, with Jackie Bradley Jr., Travis Shaw, Xander Bogaerts, Rusney Castillo and Mookie Betts carrying the team. Bradley homered while Bogaerts and Betts combined for four hits, three RBIs and three runs in a 7-5 win in the series opener. Several of Philadelphia’s better young players are battling injuries, but rookie Darnell Sweeney is making the most of his expanded playing time with five RBIs in the last three games. The Phillies will showcase another rookie when Alec Asher takes the mound opposite Boston’s Wade Miley on Saturday.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Alec Asher (0-1, 6.35 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Wade Miley (10-10, 4.57)

Asher is giving Philadelphia fans a look at some of the return from the trade of Cole Hamels and struggled in his major-league debut on Sunday. The 23-year-old was reached for four runs on eight hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings to suffer the loss. Asher went 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in four minor-league starts following the trade.

Miley is trying to bounce back from a pair of rough starts and was reached for a total of nine runs and 22 hits in 12 2/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets to close out August. The Louisiana native surrendered a total of three runs in each of his previous two outings. Miley is 1-1 with a 4.24 ERA in three career starts against the Phillies.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox 3B Pablo Sandoval (mid-back tightness) was scratched from the lineup Friday and is day-to-day.

2. Philadelphia RF Domonic Brown (concussion) could miss the rest of the season.

3. Bogaerts is 7-for-13 over the last three games and has multiple hits in six of the last eight.

GAME: Atlanta Braves (54-81) at Washington Nationals (69-65)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: 188, -205 TOTAL: 7.5

The Washington Nationals are starting to put the pieces together in their bid to contend for a division title while the Atlanta Braves have effectively thrown the puzzle in the trash can. After a 15-1 rout in the opener was followed by a 10-inning triumph, the host Nationals vie for their sixth win in eight outings when they continue their four-game series versus the reeling Braves on Saturday.

Jayson Werth recorded his fourth multi-hit performance in seven outings in Friday's 5-2 win for Washington, which resides five games behind the first-place New York Mets in the National League East. Ryan Zimmerman is 18-for-45 with seven homers and 22 RBIs during his last 11 contests and Yunel Escobar is 13-for-28 during his eight-game hitting streak, but both are just 1-for-6 in his career versus Saturday starter Shelby Miller. While the Nationals are ascending, the Braves are sinking to new lows after losing 10 in a row for the first time since 2006 and 11 consecutive on the road for the first time since 1977. Atlanta (54-81) has dropped eight straight meetings with Washington and is battling division rival Philadelphia (53-82) for the worst record in the majors.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSS (Atlanta), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Shelby Miller (5-12, 2.56 ERA) vs. Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (9-7, 4.13)

Miller's winless stretch reached 3 1/2 months (19 starts) as he took the loss on Monday after allowing one run on six hits in seven innings against Miami. A lack of run support has been a common theme for the 24-year-old, who has received two or fewer runs on 14 occasions during this stretch. Miller, who hasn't won since May 17, permitted one run on three hits in seven frames of a no-decision versus Washington on June 24 before taking the loss against the Nationals after yielding five runs in as many innings.

After three straight losses, Gonzalez walked away with a no-decision on Monday after allowing three runs on five hits in six innings versus St. Louis. The 29-year-old has struggled in his career with the Braves (3-8, 4.93 ERA), but picked up the win in his last meeting after permitting two runs on five hits in seven frames. Gonzalez needs to keep a keen eye on Freddie Freeman, who collected three hits in the opener and is 9-for-27 versus the left-hander in his career.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington CF Bryce Harper has six walks in the series and 11 in his last five contests.

2. Atlanta CF Cameron Maybin is 4-for-13 in his last three games after going 0-for-16 in his previous five.

3. Nationals SS Ian Desmond is 1-for-7 with four strikeouts in the series.

The Reds have won three of five after losing 13 of their previous 14, while the Brewers completed a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh on Thursday for their fourth win in a row before getting rained out in the series opener.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Wily Peralta (5-8, 4.30 ERA) vs. Reds RH Keyvius Sampson (2-2, 6.43)

Peralta posted his third win in four starts overall and improved to 4-4 in his career versus Cincinnati with a strong outing on Sunday. The 26-year-old Dominican allowed one run on seven hits in as many innings in a 4-1 triumph and did not walk a batter for the first time since May 6. Peralta has pitched well in Cincinnati, recording a 2.43 ERA in five career starts.

Sampson endured his third straight tough outing after being ripped for six runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings of a no-decision versus Milwaukee on Saturday. The 24-year-old has been brutal at home, going 0-2 with a bloated 8.10 ERA while allowing the opposition to bat a gaudy .344 against him. Sampson kept the ball in the park versus the Brewers after being taken deep twice in his previous outing against Detroit on Aug. 24.

WALK-OFFS

DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: 178, -194 TOTAL: 8

The Houston Astros received another weapon as they make a run at landing an American League playoff berth. Outfielder George Springer is back from a wrist injury and will be in the lineup for the second straight night when the Astros host the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

Springer went 1-for-4 as Houston pounded out 13 hits en route to an 8-0 victory in Friday's opener of the three-game series. The 25-year-old hit 13 homers prior to being injured on July 1 and adds speed in addition to punch to the Astros' lineup. Hank Conger smashed his second career grand slam in Friday's victory as first-place Houston stretched its lead over Texas in the American League West to three games. Minnesota remained 1 1/2 games behind the Rangers in the battle for the AL's second wild-card spot.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLBN, FSN North (Minnesota), ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Ervin Santana (3-4, 5.40 ERA) vs. Astros RH Lance McCullers (5-5, 3.21)

Santana dominated the Astros on Sunday as he struck out a season-high 10 and gave up six hits over seven scoreless innings. The strong outing followed a six-start stretch during which he went 0-4 with a 9.20 ERA. Santana is 2-0 with a 2.61 ERA in three career starts against Houston and has shut down Colby Rasmus (0-for-14, six strikeouts) while struggling against Carlos Gomez (7-for-18, one homer).

McCullers lost to Santana in his last turn, giving up three runs and four hits in six innings. He has won just one of his last seven outings despite allowing four or more runs just twice in that stretch. McCullers is 4-0 with a 1.65 ERA and .198 batting average against in eight home starts this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins DH Miguel Sano (hamstring) returned to the starting lineup and went 1-for-4.

2. Conger helped the Astros set a franchise record as his homer made him the 10th member of the team with 10 or more this season. The 2004 Detroit Tigers hold the major-league mark of 11 players with at least 10 blasts.

3. Minnesota CF Aaron Hicks (hamstring) was activated from the disabled list and went 1-for-4 on Friday.

GAME: Cleveland Indians (65-68) at Detroit Tigers (61-73)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 7:08 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: -156, 144 TOTAL: 8

The Cleveland Indians are in sixth place in the race for the two wild cards in the American League but will attempt to continue their recent hot stretch in the second of a three-game series at the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night. The Indians improved to 10-4 in their last 14 games with an 8-1 romp over Detroit in the series opener.

Already without 12-game winner Carlos Carrasco (shoulder), Cleveland had to overcome another setback Friday when reigning Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber was scratched with a hamstring strain that is expected to cost him two starts. Jerry Sands snapped out of a 2-for-20 funk with a homer, triple and two RBIs as the Indians beat the Tigers for only the 13th time in 13 meetings. Detroit has lost 12 of its last 14 overall and its pitching staff has been ravaged for nearly 10 runs per game over the last seven contests. The Tigers send Alfredo Simon to the mound Saturday against Cleveland's Danny Salazar.

TV: 7:08 p.m. ET, STO (Cleveland), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Danny Salazar (12-7, 3.27 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Alfredo Simon (11-9, 5.09)

Salazar rebounded from a rare clunker and an illness that forced him to miss a start by limiting the vaunted Toronto lineup to two runs and six hits over seven innings while striking out 10 in his last outing. It was the third consecutive road start for Salazar, who has permitted two runs or fewer in seven of his last nine turns. Salazar has split a pair of decisions against the Tigers this season and is 2-3 with a 3.86 ERA against them.

Unlike Salazar, Simon was bludgeoned by the Blue Jays in his last outing, surrendering four home runs while giving up six runs and six hits over five innings. He was battered for eight runs over 4 1/3 innings by the Los Angeles Angels in his previous start, which came on the heels of a one-hit shutout against Texas. Simon has won each of his three starts versus the Indians this season, allowing four runs over 17 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Indians LF Michael Brantley has multiple hits in eight of his last 15 games.

2. Tigers SS Jose Iglesias is expected to miss two weeks with a non-displaced chip fracture on his right middle finger.

3. Carrasco will throw a bullpen session Saturday and, barring a setback, could return to the rotation Tuesday.

GAME: New York Mets (74-60) at Miami Marlins (56-79)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: -142, 131 TOTAL: 8

The New York Mets are trying to determine the best way to proceed down the stretch with their young pitchers, and wrapping up the National League East as soon as possible would certainly allow them to get some rest. The Mets will try to get back to the process of doing that when they visit the Marlins for the second of a three-game series on Saturday.

New York lost a game in the standings and the first contest of the series when it dropped a 6-5 decision in 11 innings to the Marlins as the Washington Nationals were beating Atlanta in extra innings on Friday. The Mets, who now own a five-game lead in the NL East, are in a public dispute with agent Scott Boras over the best way to handle right-hander Matt Harvey’s workload and have a plan for all of their young pitchers as the team anticipates a deep run into October. The Marlins have no October plans but are winners of four straight and will help decide the East with 12 more games against New York and Washington. Miami attempts to steal the series behind left-hander Brad Hand while the Mets counter with a right-hander with no workload concerns – veteran Bartolo Colon.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, WPIX (New York), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Bartolo Colon (12-11, 4.42 ERA) vs. Marlins LH Brad Hand (4-4, 4.54)

Colon is moving up in the rotation as New York gives rookie Noah Syndergaard some extra rest down the stretch. Colon is riding a string of 16 straight scoreless innings after striking out nine and allowing four hits in eight scoreless innings to beat Philadelphia on Monday. The hefty veteran was nearly as strong at Miami on Aug. 3, yielding one run and seven hits in eight frames to pick up the win.

Hand had a string out two straight wins come to an end at Washington on Sunday, when he was knocked around for five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old had allowed a total of three runs in 14 frames over his previous two outings. Hand tossed four scoreless innings against New York on Aug. 4, scattering five hits and a walk while striking out three.

Preview: White Sox at Royals

GAME: Chicago White Sox (63-70) at Kansas City Royals (82-52)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: 128, -139 TOTAL: 8

After piling up 27 runs and 34 hits in back-to-back wins over Detroit, the Kansas City Royals got a taste of what it felt to be on the receiving end of such a drubbing in Friday's 12-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Kansas City looks to even the series at one game apiece when it hosts the visiting White Sox on Saturday night.

The Royals lost for only the sixth time in 20 games but are 30 games above .500 and on cruise control toward the American League Central title. Kendrys Morales drove in the lone run for Kansas City on Friday to give him nine RBIs in his last four games and move him within one of reaching 100 for the second time in his career. White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez collected four hits in the series opener and is 13-for-24 over his last six games. Chicago left-hander Jose Quintana seeks his first win over the Royals in 17 starts when he opposes Danny Duffy on Saturday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Jose Quintana (7-10, 3.75 ERA) vs. Royals LH Danny Duffy (7-6, 4.11)

Quintana has made a career of racking up no-decisions and he is coming off a pair in his last two outings, lasting 4 1/3 innings and giving up four runs to Seattle last time out after yielding four runs over six innings against Boston on Aug. 25. Quintana has faced the Royals four times this season and did not factor in the decision, leaving him 0-6 against them. He must be wary of Lorenzo Cain (15-for-40) and Salvador Perez (15-for-41).

Duffy did not factor in the decision after yielding two runs on seven hits over five innings at Tampa Bay last time out - the third straight start in which he failed to get through the sixth inning. The 26-year-old Duffy has already made four starts against the White Sox this season, but he has permitted eight runs in 8 1/3 innings in both outings at Kauffman Stadium. Second baseman Carlos Sanchez is 4-for-7 against Duffy.

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals 3B Mike Moustakas (hamstring) sat out his fourth straight game and is not expected to start Saturday.

2. White Sox C Tyler Flowers hit his seventh homer against Kansas City on Friday - his most against any opponent.

3. Royals RF Alex Rios and RHP Kelvin Herrera, out with chickenpox, could be back in the lineup by the end of next week.

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (76-58) at San Diego Padres (65-70)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 8:40 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: -115, 106 TOTAL: 6.5

The Los Angeles Dodgers look to extend their lead in the National League West when they visit the division-rival San Diego Padres on Saturday for the third contest of their four-game set. After blowing a late lead in the series opener, Los Angeles used the long ball to post an 8-4 triumph on Friday and move 7 1/2 games ahead of second-place San Francisco in the West.

Justin Ruggiano, former Padre Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Utley homered during a five-run sixth inning while Carl Crawford and Scott Schebler also went deep for the Dodgers, who have won nine of their last 11. Phenom Corey Seager started at third base for Los Angeles and went 2-for-5 with an RBI, making him 4-for-9 with three RBIs in his first two major-league contests. San Diego also turned on the power as Jedd Gyorko, former Dodger Matt Kemp and Brett Wallace homered to account for three of the team's four hits. Kemp has hit safely in 22 of his last 24 games, collecting seven homers and 30 RBIs in that span.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Alex Wood (9-9, 3.67 ERA) vs. Padres RH Tyson Ross (10-9, 3.27)

Wood fell to 2-3 in six starts since being acquired from Atlanta despite allowing only two runs in six innings against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Four of the 24-year-old's outings with Los Angeles have come on the road, where he is 6-5 with a 3.17 ERA in 17 turns this year. Wood lost his only career start versus San Diego on July 25, 2014, when he was tagged for five runs - four earned - and 12 hits in five innings while with the Braves.

Ross extended his unbeaten streak to four starts Monday, when he scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings in a victory over Texas. The 28-year-old Californian has been strong all season, allowing more than three earned runs only three times in 28 outings. Ross has a solid 2.81 ERA and one complete game in nine career games (seven starts) against Los Angeles but has lost all five of his decisions.

WALK-OFFS

1. Kemp has recorded eight multi-RBI performances in his last 12 games.

2. San Diego 1B/OF Wil Myers (wrist) was activated from the 60-day disabled list and went 0-for-4 on Friday.

3. Los Angeles OF Andre Either has 23 career homers against the Padres, the most among active major leaguers.

GAME: San Francisco Giants (69-66) at Colorado Rockies (56-78)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: 106, -115 TOTAL: 11

The San Francisco Giants attempt to put an end to their losing streak when they visit the National League West-rival Colorado Rockies on Saturday for the third contest of their four-game set. After allowing 11 runs in a series-opening loss, San Francisco gave up only two on Friday but scored just once en route to its seventh consecutive setback.

The defeat dropped the Giants eight games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot and 7 1/2 in back of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the division. Carlos Gonzalez and Nolan Arenado gave Colorado all the offense it needed in the first inning, hitting back-to-back homers to continue their competition for the league lead. Gonzalez tops the NL with 36 blasts as he's gone deep five times and driven in 12 runs in his last three games. Arenado, who went 3-for-4, extended his homer streak to a franchise record-tying five contests with his 35th of the year and has plated 11 runs during his seven-game RBI streak.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jake Peavy (4-6, 4.38 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Chad Bettis (6-4, 4.78)

Peavy escaped with a no-decision against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Monday after yielding four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. The 34-year-old former NL Cy Young Award winner has allowed four or more runs in three of his last four outings but is 2-1 in that span. Peavy, who is 1-4 on the road this season, owns a 5-7 record and 3.95 ERA in 20 career starts against Colorado.

Bettis also was fortunate to avoid a loss Monday as he surrendered four runs and 11 hits over six innings of a no-decision versus Arizona. The 26-year-old Texan allowed a total of seven runs over 17 frames in winning two of his previous three turns, with both victories coming against Atlanta. Bettis won both of his outings versus San Francisco earlier this year to even his career record against the Giants in seven games (three starts).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Rockies are 9-5 versus the Giants this season and 4-2 on their eight-game homestand.

2. Rockies 2B DJ LeMahieu was 0-for-3 in the series opener, ending his six-game hitting streak, while Giants CF Angel Pagan extended his streak to four games by going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

3. Colorado 1B Justin Morneau went 1-for-4 on Friday in his first game since May 13 due to concussion symptoms and a cervical neck strain.

GAME: Seattle Mariners (64-71) at Oakland Athletics (58-77)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 9:05 PM EST
WHERE: O.co Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: -122, 113 TOTAL: 7

Felix Hernandez is itching to take the mound after receiving some extra rest as the Seattle Mariners face the host Oakland Athletics on Saturday in the second contest of their three-game series. Hernandez hasn't pitched since beating the Athletics on Aug. 26 as manager Lloyd McClendon skipped him in the rotation to give him a breather prior to the season-ending stretch.

Hernandez allowed just two runs and three hits in eight innings while beating Oakland in his last turn but was hit hard in each of his previous two outings. "I did the same thing last year to freshen him up, and Felix had the best September of his career," McClendon told reporters. "And everybody thought I was nuts when I did it." The Mariners improved to 10-4 against Oakland and clinched the season series by winning an 11-8 slugfest on Friday as Kyle Seager and Stefen Romero each homered and recorded three RBIs. Danny Valencia hit a grand slam for the Athletics, who have allowed 26 runs while losing their last three games.

TV: 9:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Seattle), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (15-8, 3.66 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Jesse Chavez (7-13, 3.93)

Hernandez allowed 14 runs and 21 hits over 8 1/3 innings in the two starts prior to the strong effort against Oakland. He has a rather high road ERA of 4.57 to go with a 5-3 mark in 11 away starts. Hernandez is 21-8 with a 2.62 ERA against the Athletics (2-1, 3.00 ERA in four 2015 outings) and has struggled against Stephen Vogt (9-for-18, one homer) while controlling Josh Reddick (7-for-49).

Chavez allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings while losing on Aug. 25 to fall to 0-5 with a 4.24 ERA in 15 appearances (six starts) against the Mariners. He has served up nine homers in his last seven starts after entering the stretch having given up only eight. Chavez has had his problems with Nelson Cruz (6-for-13, three homers) and Robinson Cano (8-for-19).

WALK-OFFS

1. Cruz (quadriceps) sat out the opener and could miss Saturday's game as well.

2. Vogt (elbow) was scratched from Friday's starting lineup but later singled as a pinch hitter and is expected to play on Saturday.

3. Seattle LF Franklin Gutierrez (groin) departed Friday's game after one inning and is doubtful to start Saturday.

Preview: Rangers at Angels

GAME: Texas Rangers (70-63) at Los Angeles Angels (68-66)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 9:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: -108, 100 TOTAL: 7.5

Derek Holland is coming off a masterful effort and seeks another strong outing when the Texas Rangers visit the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday for the second contest of their three-game set. Holland, who blanked Baltimore on three hits for his eighth career shutout on Sunday, squares off against Jered Weaver in a pivotal game after the Angels won the series opener.

Having Holland healthy for the stretch run has been an unexpected surprise after he missed more than four months with a shoulder injury. "The last thing I wanted was to be known as a guy who is injury prone or to have anything like that happen and not being with these guys," Holland told reporters. "We're contending and not being with them was the lowest of the low moments." C.J. Cron went 3-for-4 with five RBIs as the Angels posted a 5-2 victory on Friday for their third straight win to move within 2 1/2 games of the Rangers for the American League's second wild-card spot. Texas, which has lost just four times in its last 13 contests, leads Minnesota by 1 1/2 games for the second wild card and trails the first-place Houston Astros by three in the AL West.

TV: 9:05 p.m. ET, FSW Southwest (Texas), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Derek Holland (2-1, 2.82 ERA) vs. Angels RH Jered Weaver (6-10, 4.94)

Holland struck out 11 without a walk in his fourth start of the season and third since returning from the injury. He has made just nine starts over the last two seasons after winning 10 or more games each of the previous three years. Holland is 7-6 with a 5.88 ERA in 21 career appearances (18 starts) against the Angels and has had problems with Erick Aybar (16-for-46 with eight doubles and one homer) and Mike Trout (9-for-26, two homers).

Weaver has split his last two starts while allowing 14 runs and 16 hits in 11 2/3 innings. He has walked only 22 batters in 20 starts but issued a season-high four while losing to Cleveland on Sunday. Weaver is 15-8 with a 3.55 ERA in 35 career starts against the Rangers and has struggled against Shin-Soo Choo (14-for-37, six doubles) and Mike Napoli (11-for-32, three homers).

WALK-OFFS

1. Cron is 23-for-50 with two homers and 17 RBIs against the Rangers this season.

2. Choo recorded three hits in the opener and is 6-for-12 with three walks over his last three games.

3. Los Angeles 2B Johnny Giavotella is out indefinitely after being diagnosed with fourth nerve palsy, a condition that is causing double vision when he looks down or to the left.
