Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

The Los Angeles Dodgers are enjoying one of the best two-month stretches in major-league history, and no team has felt the brunt of that dominance during that span more than the New York Mets. The Dodgers eye a 43rd victory in their last 50 contests when they continue their three-game series Saturday in New York.

Yu Darvish was masterful in his team debut Friday, striking out 10 across seven innings en route to a 6-0 triumph to give Los Angeles its 11th victory in 12 outings. The Dodgers have been especially impressive against New York, clubbing 18 homers and outscoring the Mets 42-11 this year while extending their winning streak against them to seven games dating back to last season. While Los Angeles has won eight of its last nine on the road and own a 12-game lead over the next closest team in the National League, New York has dropped five of its last six to fall 12 1/2 games back of Colorado for the second and final NL wild-card spot. The Mets own the second-worst ERA in the NL (4.92) but have watched that number skyrocket against the Dodgers, posting an 8.78 ERA and issuing 29 walks.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Rich Hill (8-4, 3.35 ERA) vs. Mets RH Seth Lugo (5-3, 4.53)

Hill worked his fifth consecutive outing of allowing two runs or fewer last Saturday in a win over San Francisco, yielding only a solo homer among two hits across 5 2/3 innings. The 37-year-old Bostonian was razor-sharp throughout July, going 4-0 with a 1.45 ERA in five turns while striking out 40 and walking only five. Hill fanned eight and permitted one run on four hits in a win versus the Mets on June 21, improving to 1-2 with a 9.00 ERA in five appearances (three starts) against them.

Lugo is coming off one of his worst efforts of the season following Sunday's loss at Seattle in which he surrendered five runs - including a pair of homers - and eight hits in five frames. The Centenary product went 2-2 with a 5.29 ERA in July, but he has been much better at home (1-1, 3.15) than on the road (4-2, 5.26). Lugo is 10-4 with a 3.72 ERA as a starter entering his 18th career turn as he faces the Dodgers for the first time.

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers OF Chris Taylor, who is batting .416 since the All-Star break, is 5-for-8 with two homers, three RBIs and six runs scored over his last two contests.

2. New York OF Michael Conforto has recorded multiple hits five times during his eight-game hitting streak.

3. Los Angeles SS Corey Seager is 14-for-28 - despite two 0-for-4 efforts - with four three-hit performances over his last seven games.

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (57-53) at Tampa Bay Rays (57-53)

Preview: Brewers at Rays

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

The Milwaukee Brewers looked as though they were fading out of the picture in the National League Central at the end of last week but are now on the verge of vaulting back into first place. The Brewers go for their fourth win in five games Saturday when they visit the Tampa Bay Rays for the second of a three-game interleague series, standing a mere one-half game behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the division.

Milwaukee shortstop Orlando Arcia is 6-for-10 in his last three contests and notched three hits on his 23rd birthday in Friday’s 2-0 victory, while the Brewers have allowed just eight runs in the last four games after earning their 1,500th win since joining the NL in 1998. Zach Davies tries to stay unbeaten on the road this season (6-0, 2.80 ERA) when he takes the mound for Milwaukee on Saturday against fellow right-hander Alex Cobb, who is coming off one of his worst starts of the season. The Rays failed to take advantage of a chance to move into the second wild-card spot in the American League after winning three straight contests at Houston but trail Kansas City by only one-half game. Tampa Bay’s Logan Morrison has warmed up again after a rough end to July, going 7-for-17 with a pair of homers and four RBIs in four August outings.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Zach Davies (12-5, 4.42 ERA) vs. Rays RH Alex Cobb (9-7, 3.89)

Davies saw his five-game winning streak come to an end Sunday against the Cubs despite allowing just three runs on seven hits over seven innings with six strikeouts. The 24-year-old had gone 5-0 in his previous six outings while yielding 11 earned runs over 39 innings, including only a pair of homers. Wilson Ramos is 3-for-6 versus Davies, who faces Tampa Bay for the first time and is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two career interleague starts.

Cobb had posted eight quality starts in nine games before producing his shortest outing of the season Monday when he surrendered eight runs in three frames at Houston. The 29-year-old Bostonian allowed two or fewer runs in seven of his previous nine starts while winning five of six decisions. Cobb yielded one run over eight innings in his only meeting with Milwaukee in 2014 and is 9-3 with a 2.56 ERA in 15 interleague starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay OF Mallex Smith had a pair of hits Friday to extend his hitting streak to seven games, during which he is 8-for-22.

2. Milwaukee optioned OF Lewis Brinson to Triple-A Colorado Springs and placed C Jett Bandy (ribs) on the disabled list while recalling C Andrew Susac before the series opener.

3. The Rays recalled LHP Jose Alvarado from Triple-A Durham and activated INF Daniel Robertson on Friday and optioned LHP Blake Snell, along with INF Taylor Featherson, to Durham.

GAME: San Diego Padres (48-59) at Pittsburgh Pirates (52-56)

Preview: Padres at Pirates

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been no better than one game over .500 at any point this season and stand three games below the break-even mark entering their 110th contest, yet they find themselves very much in the thick of the National League Central. After a huge late offensive explosion in the opener, the host Pirates eye a third straight victory overall Saturday when they continue a three-game set against the San Diego Padres.

Pinch-hitter Gregory Polanco clubbed a go-ahead, three-run homer to spark a six-run seventh inning in Friday's 10-6 victory, giving Pittsburgh back-to-back wins for the first time since concluding a season-best six-game winning streak on July 21. The Pirates (53-56), who are only 4-8 since then and 9 1/2 games behind Colorado in the NL wild-card race, crawled back to within 4 1/2 games of the division-leading Chicago Cubs following Friday's result. The Padres took two of three between the teams last weekend in San Diego, but their loss in the series opener was their sixth setback in their last seven games in Pittsburgh. Manuel Margot remained locked in at the plate for the Padres with a 2-for-5 effort Friday - including a solo homer - and is batting .425 with four home runs over his last 10 contests.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Dinelson Lamet (5-4, 5.62 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (9-7, 3.97)

Lamet was masterful in last Saturday's win against Pittsburgh, beginning his outing with four no-hit innings before coming out after six-plus frames upon allowing two runs on two hits while striking out seven. The 25-year-old rookie also won his previous turn at San Francisco six days earlier after opening July by surrendering a total of 12 runs (10 earned) over eight innings. Starling Marte struck out all three times last weekend when he faced Lamet, who is holding right-handers to a .155 average.

Cole won his third straight decision and improved to 6-1 since June 13 with Sunday's win at San Diego, yielding only a solo homer among the five hits he permitted in seven frames. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft has allowed two runs or fewer in eight of his last nine outings and finished July with a 2.25 ERA after posting a 6.17 mark in June. Cole has mostly dominated the Padres in five career starts against them, going 4-1 with a 1.47 ERA - his lowest against any NL foe.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Pirates have won each of their last 14 games when scoring at least four runs and won 20 of their past 22 such contests.

2. San Diego 1B Wil Myers is mired in an 8-for-55 slump with 17 strikeouts over his last 15 games.

3. Pittsburgh 2B Josh Harrison (leg) returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Sunday and went 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the opener.

GAME: Detroit Tigers (50-57) at Baltimore Orioles (53-55)

Preview: Tigers at Orioles

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

Tim Beckham could be labeled a big disappointment after getting drafted No. 1 overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008 and never making a big impact with that club, but perhaps a change of scenery was all he needed. Beckham will try to continue his hot stretch and drag the rest of the Baltimore Orioles' offense with him as they host the Detroit Tigers in the third of a four-game series and try to avoid a third straight loss on Saturday.

Beckham is playing his first full season in the majors and is enjoying consistent playing time with the Orioles, who are starting him at shortstop with J.J. Hardy and Ryan Flaherty both on the 60-day disabled list. Beckham, who was drafted ahead of Buster Posey and Eric Hosmer in that 2008 draft, is finally displaying his offensive tools with Baltimore, going 11-for-16 with six extra-base hits in four games since joining the team after batting .247 in 238 career games with the Rays. Beckham's 4-for-4 showing with a home run on Friday proved to not be enough when Justin Upton put the Tigers ahead with a grand slam in the eighth to lift the Tigers to a 5-2 win - their sixth victory in the last seven games. Beckham will take his hacks on Saturday against Detroit right-hander Drew VerHagen, who opposes Orioles southpaw Wade Miley.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, WJZ (Detroit), FSN Detroit, MASN 2 (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Drew VerHagen (0-1, 6.75 ERA) vs. Orioles LH Wade Miley (5-9, 5.60)

Detroit is scrambling to fill the hole left by Michael Fulmer's trip to the disabled list and are expected to give VerHagen his first major-league start since his debut in 2014. The 26-year-old was recalled from the minors last month and has made a pair of appearances out of the bullpen, yielding a total of three runs and four hits in four innings against Houston and Kansas City. VerHagen went 7-7 with a 4.90 ERA in 19 starts for Triple-A Toledo before being recalled.

Miley spent the last two months getting lit up but showed some signs of a turnaround at Texas on Sunday, when he allowed two runs and struck out five in five innings. The Louisiana native has completed six innings once in his last 11 outings and not logged a quality start since June 1 while watching his ERA rise from 2.82 to its current 5.60. Miley started at Detroit on May 16 and did not factor in the decision while allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks in five innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers RH Justin Verlander reportedly cleared waivers and is eligible to be traded before Aug. 31.

2. Upton recorded four homers and 14 RBIs in the last six games.

3. Baltimore RHP Mychal Givens surrendered Upton's blast on Friday, ending a string of 12 straight scoreless appearances.

Preview: Marlins at Braves

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

For all the talk about Aaron Judge becoming major league baseball’s best slugger, right fielder Giancarlo Stanton continues to lay claim to that title as his Miami Marlins play the middle contest of a three-game series Saturday at the Atlanta Braves. Stanton blasted two homers in Friday’s 5-3 loss - including a 477-foot bomb that registered as the longest to date in the first year of play at SunTrust Park - giving him 14 homers in his last 24 games.

Stanton’s eighth multi-homer game of the season gives him 35 longballs on the season, tops in the majors and two off his career high of 37 (2012, 2014). Atlanta worked around the Stanton power show in the series opener, getting a three-run homer from right fielder Nick Markakis in the sixth inning to win for just the second time in its past nine games. Markakis is hitting .444 since July 26, while Braves center fielder Ender Inciarte extended his hitting streak to 10 games in Friday’s victory. Atlanta leads the season series 6-3 while improving to 44-20 when scoring four or more runs.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Miami RH Dan Straily (7-7, 3.79 ERA) vs. Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (9-6, 4.08)

Straily, who has provided stability for Miami’s shaky rotation, looks to snap a three-start losing streak during which he has allowed 12 runs in 15 innings. The 28-year-old surrendered only two runs on six hits over six innings Sunday despite losing to Cincinnati, but was hit hard in losses to Philadelphia and Texas in his previous two outings. Straily won six of his previous seven decisions, including a victory over the Braves on June 16 in which he gave up just four hits with eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 scoreless innings.

Foltynewicz suffered his first loss since May 27 in his last outing Monday against Philadelphia, giving up five runs on seven hits across four innings. It marked only the second time in the past 11 starts the 25-year-old had surrendered more than three earned runs in an outing, and since the beginning of June he is 6-1 with a 3.80 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 64 innings. Foltynewicz is 1-0 in two starts against the Marlins this season, giving up three runs in 12 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Atlanta 3B Brandon Phillips is hitting .329 in 18 games since the All-Star break after collecting two hits Friday.

2. Miami OF Ichiro Suzuki recorded his 3,061st career base hit in the eighth inning Friday, moving past Craig Biggio for 22nd on the all-time hits list.

3. Atlanta RHP Jose Ramirez has allowed just one earned run in his past 14 innings, and in his past five appearances has surrendered only two hits with nine strikeouts in six innings.

GAME: New York Yankees (57-50) at Cleveland Indians (58-48)

Preview: Yankees at Indians

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

The Cleveland Indians had trouble stringing together wins at home earlier this season but can earn their 10th straight victory at Progressive Field on Saturday when they host the slumping New York Yankees for the third of a four-game set. Trevor Bauer followed up a complete-game effort from Corey Kluber with seven strong innings Friday in a 7-2 victory as the American League Central-leading Indians won for the 11th time in 14 contests.

Cleveland shortstop Francisco Lindor saw his 13-game hitting streak come to an end Friday, but Austin Jackson has hit safely in 10 straight (16-for-39) for the Indians, who lead Kansas City by 3 ½ games in the division. Danny Salazar looks to record his third consecutive solid outing when he takes the mound for Cleveland against New York’s rookie left-hander Jordan Montgomery as the Yankees try to end a four-game slide. New York, which trails first-place Boston by three games in the AL East and holds down one of two wild-card spots, has managed just six runs during their losing streak and left nine on base Friday while committing its fourth error of the series. AL home run leader Aaron Judge had a single and two walks Friday, but the Yankees' slugger is just 12-for-69 since the All-Star break.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, YES (New York), STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH Jordan Montgomery (7-6, 4.15 ERA) vs. Indians RH Danny Salazar (4-5, 4.63)

Montgomery was pounded by Tampa Bay last time out, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over 2 2/3 innings to take the loss after winning five of his previous six decisions. The Yankees lost five of the 24-year-old South Carolina native’s six starts in July while he compiled a 5.90 ERA after he went 4-0 with a 2.59 mark in June. Montgomery faces Cleveland for the first time in his career and is 3-4 with a 4.34 ERA in 10 road starts this season.

Salazar has shown progress in his first two starts since coming off the disabled list, permitting two runs and four hits over 13 innings combined with 16 strikeouts and two walks. The 27-year-old Dominican earned the win last time out at the Chicago White Sox after giving up two runs and three hits across six frames. Brett Gardner is 3-for-8 with a homer versus Salazar, who is 1-1 with a 5.60 ERA in three career starts against the Yankees.

WALK-OFFS

1. Yankees OF Clint Frazier became the fourth player in franchise history to register 14 extra-base hits in his first 25 games before going 0-for-5 on Friday.

2. Cleveland 3B Giovanny Urshela recorded his second multi-hit game of the season Friday and made two outstanding plays in the field.

3. New York 3B Todd Frazier belted his second homer Friday since coming over from the White Sox in a trade, improving to 10-for-48 with his new team.

Preview: White Sox at Red Sox

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

The Boston Red Sox are taking advantage of their nine-game homestand by opening up a gap on the rest of the field in the American League East. The Red Sox will try to increase their advantage in the division and post a fifth consecutive victory when they host the Chicago White Sox in the third of a four-game series on Saturday.

Boston’s new additions of Eduardo Nunez and Rafael Devers are proving to be a big boost to the offense, but it was a piece off the bench doing the damage Friday when Mitch Moreland, who entered the game in the ninth inning, blasted a walk-off home run in the 11th inning. The offense’s recent success is a nice complement to the bullpen, which looked vulnerable earlier in the week against Cleveland but has turned in 8 ? scoreless innings in the first two games against Chicago. The White Sox might be seeing some signs of promise from top prospect Yoan Moncada, who recorded a pair of hits on Friday against his former team and played strong defense at second base. Moncada will try to keep it going on Saturday against Red Sox lefty Drew Pomeranz, while Chicago counters with veteran James Shields.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH James Shields (2-3, 6.19 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Drew Pomeranz (10-4, 3.46)

Shields is struggling through a stretch of five straight outings without a quality start and was ripped for six runs and eight hits across six innings against Toronto on Monday. The California native served up three homers in that turn and has allowed 15 in 56 ? total innings. Nunez is 13-for-26 with three home runs in his career against Shields.

Pomeranz has allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his last nine starts and is coming off a strong start against Kansas City on Sunday. The 28-year-old, who was on the San Diego Padres’ staff with Shields at the beginning of last season, yielded one run in 6 ? innings but did not factor into the decision against the Royals. Pomeranz struck out eight and scattered seven hits and one run over seven frames in a win at Chicago on May 31.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox RHP Joe Kelly (hamstring) is expected to be activated from the 10-day disabled list on Saturday.

2. Chicago RF Avisail Garcia (sprained thumb) took batting practice on Friday.

3. Boston LHP David Price (elbow) has his planned throwing session on Friday cancelled due to lingering soreness.

Preview: Cardinals at Reds

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

The St. Louis Cardinals are far from being out of the National League Central race, but the Cincinnati Reds would like to help change that. The Reds aim for their second consecutive win over the visiting Cardinals when the division rivals continue their three-game series Saturday.

Cincinnati played spoiler with a 3-2 win in the series opener Friday, keeping St. Louis 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the division race. The Cardinals have lost three of their last four and five of the past eight, and they’ve scored only 15 runs over their past eight contests. Cincinnati is well out of contention but has played well of late, winning four of its last five following a six-game skid. The Reds could get All-Star shortstop Zack Cozart (quad) back Saturday, the first day he is eligible to return from the disabled list.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (9-6, 3.20 ERA) vs. Reds RH Luis Castillo (2-4, 3.56)

Lynn was thought to be a trade candidate ahead of last week’s non-waiver deadline after bolstering his value with an excellent stretch during July. The 30-year-old has posted five straight quality starts, going 3-0 with a 1.15 ERA in 31 1/3 innings. Lynn is 9-4 with a 3.15 ERA in 19 games (16 starts) against the Reds, including a 1-0 mark and a 1.64 ERA in two meetings this season.

Castillo is making the ninth start of his rookie campaign and is coming off his best outing yet. The 24-year-old Dominican held Miami to one run and three hits over eight innings to snap a three-start losing streak Sunday. Castillo is looking for his first win at home, where he is 0-2 with a 4.58 ERA in three starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto had two hits and two RBIs Friday and is 14-for-30 during a nine-game hitting streak.

2. St. Louis OF Tommy Pham added to his team leads for multi-hit games (27) and stolen bases (15) in Friday’s contest.

3. Reds pitchers have not allowed a home run in four consecutive games, their longest streak since June 7-10, 2015.

Preview: Rangers at Twins

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

All-Star Miguel Sano is questionable to play for the Minnesota Twins on Saturday when they host the Texas Rangers for the third contest of their four-game series. Sano left Friday's game after being hit by a pitch on his left hand and ensuing X-rays determined that he suffered a bruise and not a broken bone.

Sano, who is 4-for-6 with a homer against scheduled Texas starter Cole Hamels, sat out two games in late July after being plunked on the same hand, and the latest situation is prompting Minnesota manager Paul Molitor to take a wait-and-see approach. "We have all seen broken bones on pitches like that," Molitor told reporters of Sano, who has 25 homers. "He's been able to dodge that a couple times. That one scared me, the way he went down. I was surprised he got up as quickly as he did." Minnesota moved within 3 1/2 games of Kansas City for the American League's second wild-card spot after Friday's 8-4 victory, a result that leaves the Rangers 4 1/2 games back. Elvis Andrus went 3-for-4 on Friday and is 8-for-12 over his last three games for Texas, which has dropped five of seven.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Cole Hamels (5-1, 4.01 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (6-8, 6.08)

Hamels escaped with a no-decision against Seattle in his last turn after yielding four runs - three earned - and six hits in six innings. The 33-year-old has allowed 15 runs and 21 hits in 17 1/3 frames over his last three starts as his ERA has soared nearly a whole run from 3.05 to 4.01. Hamels defeated Minnesota on April 26, when he gave up three runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings and stands 2-1 with a 6.35 ERA in six career starts against the Twins.

Gibson will be recalled to make the start after a brief exile to the minors upon the team's recent acquisition of Jaime Garcia, who since has been traded to the New York Yankees. "Any time you get sent down, it's never easy, whether you deserve it or not," Gibson told reporters. "So it was tough, but you have to understand and be a professional about it. They have decisions they need to make and, unfortunately, I was the one who had to go." Gibson is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in five career starts against the Rangers but has served up two homers to Mike Napoli in nine at-bats.

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins 2B Brian Dozier went 3-for-5 with two solo homers on Friday after enduring a 5-for-37 stretch over his previous eight games.

2. Napoli was 0-for-4 on Friday and is 3-for-27 with 15 strikeouts over his last seven contests.

3. Minnesota 1B Joe Mauer, who is 0-for-12 versus Hamels, is hitless in five at-bats in the series and remains tied with Tony Oliva (1,917) for the third-most hits in franchise history.

Preview: Blue Jays at Astros

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

The Houston Astros’ offense has been of the boom-or-bust variety of late, and Friday was a big boom. The Astros will try to make it two straight offensive eruptions when they host the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday for the second contest of their three-game series.

Houston pounded out 14 runs in a win over Tampa Bay on Monday but totaled seven in dropping the next three games before finding the form again and ripping its way to a 16-7 triumph on Friday. Alex Bregman and Marwin Gonzalez each homered during a nine-run fourth inning while Tyler White had his best game since being recalled late last month, allowing four hits and a pair of home runs. The Blue Jays, who sit in last place in the American League East, dropped to 51-58 with the loss and reportedly are pushing their veteran players through revocable waivers as they reassess the future. One veteran reportedly going through waivers is right-hander Marco Estrada, who takes the mound for Toronto on Saturday against Houston’s Charlie Morton.
TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (4-7, 5.19 ERA) vs. Astros RH Charlie Morton (9-4, 3.77)

If Estrada is going to be dealt this month, then he is raising his asking price with every strong outing. The California native is winless in his last 11 turns but has allowed a total of three runs and seven hits in 12 innings over his last two outings after tossing seven strong frames against the Chicago White Sox on Monday. Estrada, who is seeing the Astros for the first time in 2017, is 2-5 with a 5.47 ERA in 13 road starts.

Morton is even sharper than Estrada of late and has allowed two runs in 13 innings over his last two starts to improve to 4-1 in his last five turns. The 33-year-old is enjoying the best strikeout rate of his career with 97 in 88 ? frames. Morton struck out just three in six innings at Toronto on July 7 but also surrendered only one run and earned the victory.
WALK-OFFS

WALK-OFFS
1. Astros SS Carlos Correa (thumb) is expected to start swinging a bat next week.

2. Toronto placed C Miguel Montero (groin) on the 10-day disabled list.

3. Houston 1B/3B Yuli Gurriel is 9-for-20 with four extra-base hits in his last five contests.
