Race 3 - Maiden Claiming - 300y on the Dirt. Purse: $10328 Class Rating: 64

QUARTER HORSE 300Y, FOR REGISTERED STATE BRED MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 124 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $12,500, IF FOR $10,000, ALLOWED 2 LBS.

RECOMMENDED*CHOICES

# 3 IRIS PILOTOS FLASH 8/5

# 1 DORA BE QUICK 12/1

# 5 JAYHAWKER JETT 12/1

My pick in this contest is IRIS PILOTOS FLASH. Facing a much softer group than last time out. Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figs of this group in his last contest. A solid 74 avg Equibase class rating may give this gelding a distinct class edge versus this field. DORA BE QUICK - Has competitive Equibase speed figs and has to be considered for a bet in this contest. Strong average Equibase Speed Figures in short races make this equine a definite contender.

Arlington - Race #3 - Post: 3:02pm - Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $12,000 Class Rating: 93

Rating:

#7 HIGH SIDE (ML=5/2)
#2 FORT DIXIE (ML=6/1)
#4 FRONTIER FORCE (ML=5/1)

HIGH SIDE - Have to make this gelding a solid contender; he comes off a sharp outing on August 13th. I expect a lot from this thoroughbred. His speed ratings under similar conditions are tops in this field. When I handicap a race on the grass, I think sometimes class ratings are more important than speed figs. This race horse has the highest average class in the entire field. Ran a less than stellar race at Arlington last out. Racing on a fast track puts this gelding at the top of my contenders list. This gelding's last figure is good enough to win here, I'll wager on him back again this time. FORT DIXIE - I like to invest in this angle, a pony coming back off a sharp race within the last 30 days. FRONTIER FORCE - A thoroughbred coming back this rapidly after a good outing is a good omen. Lets try to beat the probable favorites with this gelding. Just missed last out, but ran a respectable race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 ARCH RIVALRY (ML=7/2), #5 MY CURBY (ML=6/1), #3 SUPA (ML=8/1),

ARCH RIVALRY - Granted the last race was nice, finishing third. The lack of any recent activity raises some concerns though. All sorts of crazy early zip on board for this affair. Little chance for this early speedster. SUPA - The pace situation just isn't too promising for this speedball. Many other thoroughbreds would have to scratch to improve his hopes. The speed rating in the last race doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class rating of today's contest. Mark this horse as a likely underpriced contender.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Bet on #7 HIGH SIDE to win if we can get at least 5/2 odds

Charles Town - Race #6 - Post: 9:22pm - Maiden Special - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $23,000 Class Rating: 53

Rating:

#3 MEAN BEAN (ML=5/1)
#4 LETCHER (ML=8/5)
#7 ZIP TIGHT (ML=9/5)

MEAN BEAN - This gelding is in first-rate condition right now. Finished second in the last race and comes back soon. At the top of the lane, he will have a good shot. Has much speed, and the bullring will work in his favor. LETCHER - Bocachica is right back for another race today after riding on board this horse for the first time on Jun 11th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. Bocachica's agent must enjoy anytime Runco gives them a mount; winning percentage together is fantastic. Any front runner that is starting from the inside has a shot on this track. Should jump out of the gate and get good position versus this field. ZIP TIGHT - Trainer Curtis moves this horse down the ladder based on class to face a lower rated field. Look for a solid performance at this level. This colt's last rating is good enough to win here, I'll wager on him back again this time out.

Vulnerable Contenders: No Vulnerable Contenders in this race,

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - MEAN BEAN - One of the class angles that my buddy Solo Steve and I play, is to look at the lifetime earnings per start. This campaigner is tops in my book.

Have to go with #3 MEAN BEAN on the win end if we get at least 5/2 odds

RACE #10 - SARATOGA RACE COURSE - 4:38 PM EASTERN POST

The Sword Dancer Stakes

12.0 FURLONGS INNER TURF GRADE I THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $1,000,000.00 PURSE

#6 FLINTSHIRE
#2 MONEY MULTIPLIER
#1 GRAND TITO
#3 ROMAN APPROVAL

Well folks ... as a 3-year-old in 1959, Sword Dancer finished second in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, losing the former by a nose to Tomy Lee, and won the Belmont Stakes, Metropolitan Handicap, Travers, Woodward, and Jockey Club Gold Cup en route to multiple year-end honors, including Horse of the Year. In 39 career starts, Sword Dancer competed only three times on grass, with his best finishes a second in the 1960 United Nations Handicap and a third in his final start, the Man o' War at Belmont the same year. A 12.0 furlong turf race since 1980, the Sword Dancer moved from Belmont Park to Saratoga in 1992. From 1994-2003, it was run as an invitational handicap. Here in the 42nd running of "The Dancer" ... #6 FLINTSHIRE, a British-bred entry, will enjoy a speed advantage on this Grade I field, is the pace profile leader, and has hit the board in five straight, winning three times in the streak of racing consistency, with two of those "Circle Trips" also qualifying as "POWER RUNS." Jockey Javier Castellano has been in his irons on two previous occasions, winning 'em both, and is back this afternoon on "Travers Day" for his 3rd ride, gunning for a "Hat Trick Win!" #2 MONEY MULTIPLIER, an 8-1 shot, has hit the board in four straight, winning twice, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in his last start.

DRF

Race 9 - $20,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet (17 - 29 / $84.40): SAND OF THE BEACH (7th)

Spot Play: LADY’S ART (3rd)

Race 1

(3) HARMONY ALWAYS well bred filly has room to improve third start out for proven connections. (5) BLISSFUL PANSY faces a weak group full of question marks. (6) ABSOLUTE HEAVEN just missed last week against similar. The 3-year-old is 0 for 14 on the year; command a price.

Race 2

(1) DONALD HIMSELF raced well from a tough spot last week. The pacer was the top driver's choice and starts from the rail. (7) DONTGETBYME is always a threat at this level. The veteran pacer has made the most money in the field on the year. (3) WILLIWIN has just been racing evenly but can hit the board with a good setup.

Race 3

(5) LADY'S ART well bred mare faces significantly weaker and owns a win against better at the track. (2) ALIBI SEELSTER mare looks to offer low value and has come up empty in her recent starts; use caution. (6) ICED OUT has been facing much tougher and was the driver's choice.

Race 4

(5) FOX VALLEY CUPID doesn't win often but should be able to handle this bunch with a good effort. (2) NANCYS SKYSCAPE just missed last start racing gamely. (1) R DUNESHINE jumps up with decent efforts from time to time; use underneath.

Race 5

(2) DUNESIDE SPORT showed a big late burst of speed two weeks ago. If the pacer races like that it gets the job done. (3) EXPLODENT went a big three-quarters of a mile last week before tiring late. (6) CAPELO will look to make it three straight wins; fires late.

Race 6

(5) FOX VALLEY GYPSY filly has been disappointing this year, however she faces a very weak field. (1) FOX VALLEY PIPA five-year-old is much better from off the pace. She looks to offer good value and is capable especially should the top choice falter. (6) DUNESIDE PERTTIE doesn't look the best on paper but has been facing much tougher.

Race 7

(3) SAND OF THE BEACH scored a big win off more than a year layoff last out. The pacer should only improve second start back. (1) MIGHTY HOT SHOT was the top driver's choice of three but rarely wins; command a price. (5) MAJOR ED owns the fastest win in the field at the track. The pacer has raced poorly in two straight and will need to bounce back.

Race 8

(7) IDEAL ROWAN was awesome two back before having a tough go of it last week. The pacer will offer a big price and might be one of few threats in the race. (6) FOX VALLEY ELIJAH has burned cash in three of four. The four-year-old owns a decent brush and is in real soft. (3) BC'S BAD CAT has been competitive against similar on the year.

Race 9

(6) BASS PLAYER freshman pacer has a nice pedigree and room to improve. (4) SPIRITED ENCOUNTER has offered a low price four weeks in a row only to come up short every time. (8) HEZA TERROR has room to improve against a suspect bunch. The 3-year-old faces younger and showed some gate speed last start.

Race 10

(6) THE REAL TONE well bred mare drops down out of the Open and will be used aggressively. (7) DANDY'S DIVA filly has been inconsistent most of the year. A good effort puts her in the mix. (2) PROSPER mare picks up the top driver off some decent efforts.

Race 11

(8) MAKEOUTLIKEAPANDIT has been close in four of six despite not being able to seal the deal. The 5-year-old will offer a big price and could use a smooth trip. (9) WHY ASK WHY pacer seems to race to his competition but has surprised with big upsets in the past. (7) BIG BRAD six-year-old stallion is one of the biggest cash burners at the track. The pacer always takes heavy money in Illinois and owns only three wins in sixty plus starts; use underneath.

Race 12

In one of the toughest races to handicap on the card, (5) KRUSTY THE CLOWN looks to offer value and owns a fast win at this level three back. (6) WINNING DREAM gets sent out for a hot barn off a winning qualifier. (9) TORNADO HENRY pacer will need a fast pace to close into for his best chance to hit the ticket.

EARLY PICK 4: 2,4,5,7/3,5,6/4,8/1,5,6 = $72

LATE PICK 4: 3,5,8/1,4/1,2,5/2,4,6 = $54

MEET STATS: 302 - 884 / $1573.80 BEST BETS: 52 - 82 / $166.60

SPOT PLAYS: 18 - 82 / $102.00

Best Bet: CANDLELIGHT DINNER (2nd)

Spot Play: MACS JACKPOT (4th)

Race 1

(1) WILD AND CRAZY GUY looks ready for this return based on his two qualifiers and he comes back at a reduced level here. (3) CASH FOR GOLD also gets class relief and figures highly, but his racing style often gets him in trouble. Maybe Drury will ask him for more earlier in the mile here. (8) STEPPIN OUT may try to take these down the road with the class drop. (9) AMITYVILLE LINDY will most likely be sitting last early but he can pass a few of these to take a share.

Race 2

(6) CANDLELIGHT DINNER has won every start easily so far and she picks up Miller here which obviously won't hurt; on top. (2) WORLD APART comes off a powerful win in the Geers at Tioga and she looks like the only real threat to the choice here. (1) HAPPY HANNAH was a very good 2nd to the choice last time. She has upside and should make the ticket here again. (4) MANHATTAN PLAY is improving in each start and merits a look for Tri and Super bets here.

Race 3

(1) BETTORS WESTERN has displayed top speed both early and late in his miles. He should be tough in here starting from the inside. (8) CLASSIC PRO went a phenomenal trip on the rim in the Nassagaweya. He's worth a long look here with Miller taking over the reins. (5) CALVIN K was just short last time after building a big lead. He can threaten here if he trips out. (4) ROCK THIS WAY blew by some winded leaders late to drive off and break his maiden at huge odds in a Grand Circuit race. He could be overbet off that win here that may have been more a product of trip than anything else.

Race 4

(7) MACS JACKPOT absolutely flew the last 1/16th of a mile to reach up for the win after getting backed up on dead cover in the Nassagaweya. I'll give him the nod to repeat off that impressive score. (5) IDEAL WHEEL was never put into the race last week, but after missing a month that start could serve as a perfect tightener for the Metro; beware. (2) OCEAN COLONY must be respected here off his strong win in the Geers. (4) DARLINGS DRAGON closed rapidly with the choice to just miss and has the look of the contender but it's hard to call that driver on top in this type of competition.

Race 5

(6) ERLE DALE N bounced back with a huge mile last week and bottomed out the field. The step up isn't that great here; call to repeat. (5) NIRVANA SEELSTER drops from the Preferred and he will no doubt get sent hard off the gate here. He is the main rival. (3) THE WAYFARING MAN has never been better. Respect his improving form. (8) JINS SHARK should be well tightened up now but this is a tough spot starting outside several other quick leavers; minor share predicted.

Race 6

(8) IDYLLIC BEACH has lived up to her high-end breeding so far and Gingras will likely try to control this race from the outset; top call. (4) FADE was game but no match for Candlelight Dinner last week. Her good early speed and excellent form should be respected in this spot. (1) AGENT Q is another with sharp early speed that is in with a good chance in this contentious heat. (2) OBVIOUS BLUE CHIP had no chance to rally when the pace accelerated last time. She is worth considering at a price here.

Race 7

(1) UNCLE BEN N had little chance in his last two starts from outer posts vs. better at Yonkers. Dave Miller and an inside post could be just what the doctor ordered for this gelding. (5) BUDDA BLUE CHIP is worth a look at a price moving to the middle of the gate here. He made some eye-catching moves in both his wins two and three starts back. (6) WAZZUP WAZZUP steps up off an easy win and he should be right in the thick of this. (3) BRINGHOME THEBLUE is in top form but he may find a couple of these too tough.

Race 8

(8) BETTORS DREAM went an insane trip last week, dueling all the way and he still managed to hold second at the wire. Picking up Tetrick here makes him the top choice in this field. (3) BLOOD LINE took a mark of 1:51 3/5 in his debut. He obviously has the speed to contend here. (5) R J P has yet to win but his potent late kick should play well here. (7) SOUTHWIND GENERAL looked great in his debut at Grand River but this is a big step up; your call.

Race 9

(4) TOM HILL was victim of circumstance last week when trying to rally off poor cover. He was airborne at the wire and was again an unlucky loser. Moving inside should see a more aggressive drive this time; top call. (1) ALL THE COOKIES rallied well last time now he picks up Gingras; look out. (2) BLAYDE HANOVER was beaten last week by a colt that keeps on winning regularly. He's not out of this. (8) SPORTS VISION has been lights out in his last two starts but figures to be rallying for one of the minor slots here racing against much better.

Race 10

(5) WALTZKING HANOVER was a game second to a classy winner at this level last week despite enduring a long uncovered trip. He should be tough in here off that mile. (1) BUGGER BRUISER will likely try to control things or sit the pocket here. Either way, he should be a threat with this draw. (2) SURPRISE HANOVER is in good form and should contend here, but he may get over bet off the quick last 1/4 in his most recent mile. (3) ST LADS LOTTO is another that benefits from an inside draw and should be able to work out a good trip.

Race 11

(4) SEMI AUTOMATIC returns to a 7-day cycle here and meets a group he fits better with; slight nod. (6) BEAST MODE was racing very well here early in the meet. He should appreciate the return home; using. (2) NVESTMENT BLUECHIP is likely the best one in here but he could get a conservative steer and become trip-dependent in this conditioned race. (7) POISONOUS is sharp but faces tougher here; for a slice. (10) PRINT MEDIA could get a boost from the barn change and sneak into the exotics at a price.

Yonkers: Saturday 8/27 Analysis
By Matt Rose

DRF

MEET STATS: 289 - 857 / $1,605.40

BEST BETS: 38 - 71 / $129.20

Best Bet: NEWBORN SASSY (9th)

Spot Play: CASIMIR JITTERBUG (3rd)

Race 1

(3) SNAP TO IT A has been reasonably sharp recently without a victory to show for it; the class and post relief can get him over the top. (4) BADIX HANOVER has ridden the rail in his two local starts with on-the-board results; similar trip could occur tonight. (5) BAKERSFIELD has raced very gamely on the rim in his last two.

Race 2

(2) RONNY BUGATTI is sharp and draws well; he seems most logical to take this as the favorite but he's failed in the past in a similar scenario. (4) KEYSTONE HONOR needed last week's start after breaking the start prior when he was primed to make a run; he can reach from this improved post. (1) KINGS BARNS hasn't done much in his last couple but it's hard to ignore anything from the Allard barn.

Race 3

(5) CASIMIR JITTERBUG looked like lock-city last out but found a way to lose; he can redeem himself at a much better price. (4) SECOND WIND N is back from a failed try at Pocono but his last two local efforts were super, including upsetting the top choice. (7) SCOTT ROCKS has loads of speed and class; must include.

Race 4

(1) KINDOFABIGDEAL probably should have been closer to the winner last week but a similar effort with a live trip can get it done. (2) REUBEN BROGDEN N gets needed class and post relief plus Sears in the bike; very logical. (3) SOMEWHERE FANCY is up in class off a win and has always raced well over this track.

Race 5

(7) FEEL THE NEED A gets yet another big test tonight but so far the import has passed every one with flying colors; stay on the bandwagon. (1) MELMERBY BEACH gets a nice post assignment here and will be used aggressively early to protect position. (6) P H SUPERCAM finished decently considering he was chasing the speedy winner from the rim; Bamond-trained millionaire must be considered.

Race 6

Hambletonian winner (3) MARION MARAUDER is here for the Yonkers Trot and I have to believe as long as he minds his manners in his debut over the half-mile oval he'll prove best. (1) IRON MINE BUCKY was a Hambo finalist and he followed that up with a stellar effort in defeat in the Colonial consolation; threat from the inside spot. (4) LAGERFELD hails from Takter and has quietly banked over $500K in his career. (2) SMALLTOWNTHROWDOWN has been super in NYSS tests and has plenty of half-mile experience.

Race 7

(4) CELEBRITY EVENTSY has really come into her own of late and the versatile trotting filly should be forwardly placed from this spot; top billing. (6) WINDOWSHOPPER was everybody's sneaky pick in the Hambo Oaks but she gapped and broke; clearly she has talent but now she has to handle the half-mile track and may have too far to come. (1) WILDFLOWER has speed, seems well behaved and draws best.

Race 8

(2) UNDERCOVER STRIKE gets serious post relief with the lucky inside draw; veteran has been sharp for ages. (5) MELADY'S MONET gave way when pressed on the front end last week; clearly he's better from off the pace. (8) E R ELLIE has been a model of consistency all season and I'll throw her in underneath for some value.

Race 9

(3) NEWBORN SASSY has been razor-sharp in all recent and clearly looks best here; connections look for back-to-back Lady Maud wins. (2) APPLE BOTTOM JEANS has loads of speed and an inside draw; filly should be in line for a live trip and complete a chalky exacta. (5) HUG A DRAGONESS ships in for Burke and could compete for a minor share.

Race 10

(7) LUCK BE WITH YOU was a solid second to Mel Mara last week and just missed here the start prior; Oakes trainee will be firing early. (4) TAKE IT BACK TERRY ended up uncovered and chasing Feel The Need A last out; could be second best again. (1) MCERLEAN didn't fire in his last two after a solid effort the start prior; inside post assignment should help.

Race 11

(5) COOPERSTOWN flashed his usual early speed last week then was bottomed a bit from the pocket; Bartlett picks up the drive tonight and they should be forwardly placed again. (4) ARTISTIC MAJOR was a solid second last out nipping the top choice at the wire; Steve Elliott trainee has been good in practically every start this season. (2) MAKE SOME LUCK could not last on the engine last week but he should be close to the pace again.

Race 12

(1) E Z NOAH draws best and can top these if the Allard trainee brings his 'A' game. (6) SOMEWHERE IN L A takes a needed drop from the Open ranks and note he did beat that type four back. (2) FOOL ME ONCE is always a factor when drawn inside.

'NFLx - Some coaches care'

San Diego Chargers at Minnesota Vikings August 27, 1:00 EST

One barometer used by handicappers in these meaningless games is to identify coaches who have a history of instilling a winning attitude during practice season. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer is shaping up to be one of the few coaches putting an emphasis on winning these August games. Nipping Bengals 17-16 in the NFLX opener, handing Seahawks an 18-11 defeat in Wk2 has Zimmer's troops 10-1 SU with a money making 9-2 mark at the betting window in HOF/Preseason games since taking over the reigns in 2014. Vikings opened -4.0 point favorites.

August Pitchers Report
By Marc Lawrence

With the MLB trading deadline officially closed, and the NFL preseason whetting our pigskin palates, the month of August sets the table for the stretch run of the baseball season. Which pitchers can we count on to satisfy our tastes, and which ones figure to sour our stomachs?

Take a look below.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of August.

On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in August, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each April over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s August list.

I’ll be back next month with September’s Good Month Pitchers.

Until then, as legendary singer and songwriter Neil Diamond would say, enjoy the hot August nights.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

Arrieta, Jake - 10-5 (6-3 A)

After being Clayton Kershaw-like for nearly 12 months, the Cubs starter has "regressed" back to just being among the best starters in baseball. Arrieta has a nearly 3-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio and only allows a base hit 70 percent of the time in innings pitched this season, among the finest in the majors.

Duffy, Danny - 11-4 (6-1 H)

After starting the season as a reliever, the Kansas City left-hander was forced back into the rotation based on need and he has responded. Since June, after a pair of starts, Duffy has put up an ERA of just over 3.00 and opposing batters have just a .289 on-base percentage against him.

*Gallardo, Yovani - 9-4 (5-2 A)

Not close to the same pitcher he used to be with Milwaukee, with ERA so far this season approaching almost two runs higher than career average (5.37 vs. 3.73). The lost velocity is to blame and secondary pitches have less bite. For Baltimore to win AL East, Gallardo has to find some of his old magic.

Greinke, Zack - 10-5 (5-2 H)

After being on the shelf with oblique injury since late June, Greinke is close to returning for Arizona if no reoccurrence were to take place after a rehab start or two this month. After pathetic start to season, the D-Backs prized starter has cut ERA by 2 1/2 runs and is close to career norms in all major categories. Elite starter.

*Hamels, Cole - 12-6 (8-4 H)

Having typical Hamels season, with low numbers across the board. In bigger picture, underrated high level hurler who has not been getting acclaim after Phillies fall, but has been ace with Texas. As usual, left-handed batters have no chance with .176 batting average and .287 slugging percentage.

*Iwakuma, Hisashi - 12-5 (7-1 A)

Not having normal season for Seattle, with hits allowed much higher than usual for Iwakuma. However, has won four of five starts and the Mariners are 10-3 when the righty has toed the rubber since May 20. With Felix Hernandez back, this pair could lead Seattle charge to postseason.

Milone, Tom - 7-3 (4-1 A)

Milone starts for bad Minnesota club and is inconsistent as ever. Of his 74 hits allowed in only 59 2/3 innings, 11 have gone the yard. Maybe he can keep the ball down and spot his pitches better like previous August’s.

*Sanchez, Anibal - 9-3 (5-1 H)

With decreased velocity and no action on breaking pitches, Sanchez ERA has been six or higher almost all season. Not sure if he can respond this month, with opponents having BA over .300 and owning a WHIP of 1.64.

*Strasburg, Stephen - 13-3 (8-1 H)

Only July 21st, Strasburg suffered first loss of entire season after 13 consecutive wins. Though the fastball is no longer in upper 90's all the time, the breaking pitches disappear from batter's view and he's been exceptional. If Strasburg has true to form month, he will have real shot at 20 wins in 2016.

Teheran, Julio - 11-5 (7-2 H)

Suffered lat strain in late July and has been a victim of no run support from bad Braves club with 2.81 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and opposing batters at only .205 batting average. Note: Teheran’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

Weaver, Jered - 12-5 (7-3 A)

Shell of his former self at 33. Never a hard thrower, Weaver's fastball only occasionally makes the upper 80's these days and his once dominating changeup is a pitch batter's wait on now with lack of variance of speed of pitches. Will blend good and really awful performances these days.

*Zimmermann, Jordan - 12-6 (8-3 H)

On July 24th had excellent rehab start and will be rejoining Detroit this month. After sensational start with Tigers, Zimmermann was tagged for at least five runs in four of his last five outings. Detroit needs the Zimmermann they had early in the season to have chance to catch Cleveland in AL Central.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Gray, Sonny - 5-11 (0-7 A)

Given Gray's troubles this month, his woes of all season are very likely to continue. Gray simply has been more hittable the entire season, permitting those with bats to hit almost 50 points higher than normal batting average permitted of .233. Note: Gray’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

*Hellickson, Jeremy - 4-11 (2-9 A)

Back of the rotation starter, Hellickson has largely performed better than expected for Philadelphia and as this article went live, he was rumored to be traded. His KW ratio is significantly higher at 4 to 1 compared to 3 to 1 for his career. Will he be able to maintain the rest of season?

Kazmir, Scott - 5-11 (1-7 A)

The Dodgers port-sider has 9-4 record, but his 4.41 ERA is still above career average of 3.98. Durability has been issue all season, with too many starts around five innings for what is supposed to be Los Angeles No. 2 or 3 starter.

Koehler, Tom - 4-13 (0-10 A)

Above average arm but always up or down and unless he pulls a Rich Hill, at 30 is not likely to change. An 8-8 record, 4.18 ERA and WHIP of 1.46, is about what we have come to expect from Mr. Koehler. Note: Koehler’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

*Miley, Wade - 5-11 (1-6 A)

Overrated lefty who does not miss many bats and fails to come anywhere close to averaging punch-out an inning. Strictly an innings-eater and provides nothing more than 50-50 chance to win.

Miller, Shelby - 5-11 (2-8 H)

Demoted to Triple-A in July after disastrous campaign. Miller hopes to regain confidence and repair mechanics that are really out of whack and return to Arizona yet this season.

Samardzija, Jeff - 5-13 (3-8 H)

After appearing as the No.3 starter San Francisco wanted for two months, Smards has returned to same old serviceable pitcher of the past and seen his ERA climb from 2.84 to present 4.30 heading into this month.

MLB roundup: Cubs win on Bryant's 10th-inning blast
By The Sports Xchange

LOS ANGELES -- Kris Bryant homered twice, including a game-winning two-run homer in the 10th, and rallied the Chicago Cubs to a 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night before 48,609 at Dodger Stadium.
Bryant, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, tagged Dodgers reliever Adam Liberatore (2-1) after Dexter Fowler singled to start the inning. It was his National League-best 35th home run, boosting the Cubs (82-45) to their fourth straight win.
Reliever Travis Wood (4-0) worked a perfect ninth for the decision. Arnoldis Chapman earned his 30th save with a scoreless 10th.
Los Angeles (71-57) had its lead in the National League West dwindle to a game with the San Francisco Giants beating the Atlanta Braves.

Yankees 14, Orioles 4
NEW YORK -- Gary Sanchez highlighted another big night at the plate with a long two-run homer and New York rolled to a victory over Baltimore.
Sanchez drove in four runs and had three hits in his first four at-bats but it was his long home run to deep left field off Vance Worley that prompted chants of "Gary Sanchez" from the crowd. Before hitting his 10th home run, the rookie catcher singled and had a two-run double while scoring two runs.
Sanchez recorded his fifth career game with at least three hits and his latest showing raised his average 14 points to .403.

Diamondbacks 4, Reds 3 (11 innings)
PHOENIX -- Brandon Drury doubled down the left-field line in the 11th inning, took third on a grounder and scored on a wild pitch in Arizona's victory over Cincinnati at Chase Field.
After Tuffy Gosewisch walked to put runners on first and third with two outs, Blake Wood (5-3) threw a wild pitch on his first pitch to Jean Segura, and Drury scored easily.
All three of the Diamondbacks' victories in the last five games have been walkoffs.

Blue Jays 15, Twins 8
TORONTO -- Justin Smoak and Russell Martin each had five RBIs, Francisco Liriano earned his first win for the Blue Jays and Toronto used four home runs to defeat Minnesota.
Smoak, Martin, Josh Donaldson and Darwin Barney homered for the Blue Jays. Donaldson added three RBIs.
The Blue Jays took a one-game lead in the American League East with the Boston Red Sox loss to the Royals Friday.

Astros 5, Rays 4
HOUSTON -- Evan Gattis launched a walk-off home run to cap a wild ninth inning in Houston's victory over Tampa Bay at Minute Maid Park.
After Carlos Correa drilled an opposite-field home run to right field on the first pitch from Rays closer Alex Colome (1-4) in the ninth inning, Gattis worked the count full before crushing a 3-2 pitch deep to left field. Correa smacked his 19th home run while Gattis crushed his 21st for Houston, which has won six of seven games.
The Rays trailed 3-0 before mounting a methodical comeback, scratching across single runs against Astros right-hander Mike Fiers in the third, fifth and seventh innings before Mike Mahtook blasted a two-out solo home run off Astros closer Ken Giles (2-3) in the ninth inning that gave Tampa Bay a 4-3 lead.

Nationals 8, Rockies 5
WASHINGTON -- Veteran lefty Gio Gonzalez picked up his 100th career win and Jayson Werth and Bryce Harper each had two hits and two RBIs as Washington beat Colorado.
Gonzalez (9-9) allowed two runs and just four hits in six innings before he was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the last of the sixth. The Miami-area product, now 100-75 in his career, gave up just one walk with five strikeouts and threw 85 pitches.
Rookie right-hander Koda Glover took over in the seventh and retired all three batters, including the first two via strikeouts.

Royals 6, Red Sox 3
BOSTON -- The hottest pitching staff in baseball slowed down the best offense in baseball.
Kansas City, who boasts the best ERA in the majors in August, held Boston at bay, and the Royals bullpen extended its franchise-record scoreless-innings streak to 42 innings before a ninth-inning hiccup in a win at Fenway Park.
Starter Ian Kennedy (9-9) earned the win for the Royals (67-61), who have won 11 of their past 12 games and 16 of their past 19. The Royals had a 1.19 ERA in their past 10 games and a 2.26 ERA in August before Friday.

Mets 9, Phillies 4
NEW YORK -- Bartolo Colon contributed with his arm and his bat Friday night, when the right-hander earned the win by pitching into the eighth inning while collecting two hits and scoring two runs as New York cruised past Philadelphia at Citi Field.
The Mets won for the fifth time in six games to remain 3 1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the race for the National League's second wild card.
The Phillies have lost three of four.

Mariners 3, White Sox 1
CHICAGO -- Felix Hernandez pitched 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball and Edwin Diaz pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning as Seattle beat Chicago at U.S. Cellular Field.
Hernandez (9-4) outdueled White Sox ace Chris Sale, who took the loss despite striking out 14 in a complete-game effort. Hernandez scattered eight hits and allowed only a Todd Frazier solo home run in the seventh inning to win his fifth straight game.
Sale (15-7) allowed five hits, but pitched five innings of no-hit ball in the tough-luck loss in the battle of aces.

Tigers 4, Angels 2
DETROIT -- Justin Upton hit his fourth home run of the week, a two-run drive to left in a three-run sixth inning, and Justin Verlander retired 20 of 21 batters between singles in the first and eighth innings to power Detroit to a victory over Los Angeles and its fifth straight win.
Albert Pujols reached Verlander for his 585th career home run, one shy of tying Frank Robinson for ninth place on the all-time list, in the opening inning.
Verlander (14-7), who walked one and struck out eight, gave up a one-out single to Kaleb Cowart in the eighth then a two-out RBI double to right to Kole Calhoun that cut Detroit's lead to 4-2 before being taken out.

Cardinals 3, Athletics 1
ST. LOUIS -- Luke Weaver's third major league start netted his first win.
Working six solid innings, Weaver helped St. Louis tighten its hold on a National League wild-card spot with a victory over Oakland at Busch Stadium.
Weaver (1-1), making his first home appearance after road starts against the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies, allowed four hits and a run. He walked two and fanned seven.

Marlins 7, Padres 6
MIAMI -- Chris Johnson's walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Miami to a victory over San Diego.
Facing San Diego closer Brandon Maurer, Johnson hit a shot that bounced over the wall in right field and scored Jeff Francoeur from second for the winning run.
Fernando Rodney (2-3) pitched a perfect ninth for the win.

Indians 12, Rangers 1
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber improved to 4-0 this month and the Indians offense got going in a win over Texas.
Kluber (14-8) allowed just one run in six innings and had plenty of offense as Abraham Almonte matched his career high with four RBIs and Roberto Perez set a career high with four hits. The 12 runs were the most scored by the Indians since Aug. 12.
The Indians got on the board in the third inning with an RBI double from Jason Kipnis and tacked on two runs against Texas left-hander Martin Perez (8-10) in the fourth. Jose Ramirez made it 2-0 on a grounder and Almonte added a run-scoring double.

Pirates 5, Brewers 3
MILWAUKEE -- Jordy Mercer hit his first career grand slam and Ryan Vogelsong struck out six as Pittsburgh handed Milwaukee a loss at Miller Park.
Vogelsong (3-3), making his fifth start since coming off the disabled list, worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs, four hits and four walks. He's 5-0 with a 2.65 ERA in his last five starts against Milwaukee.
Brewers starter Matt Garza (4-6) went 5 1/3 innings and struck out a season-high nine batters but was doomed by a pair of errors by Jonathan Villar and an intentional walk that set up Mercer's blast in the sixth.

Giants 7, Braves 0
SAN FRANCISCO -- Jeff Samardzija shut out Atlanta over seven innings, leading San Francisco to a victory in the opener of a three-game series.
Angel Pagan connected on a two-run home run, and Brandon Belt and Joe Panik also drove in a pair of runs, as the Giants won for just the third time in the opening game of their last 13 series.
Pitching one night after left-hander Matt Moore came within one out of no-hitting the Los Angeles Dodgers, Samardzija gave up a double to the first batter he faced, Braves center fielder Ender Inciarte.

Preview: Rockies (60-68) at Nationals (75-53)

Game: 2
Venue: Nationals Park
Date: August 27, 2016 1:05 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals have dipped into their minor league system this year for starting pitchers when veteran hurlers have gone on the disabled list.

Earlier this summer, Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez -- a pair of promising right-handers -- made their major league debuts.

But another young hurler who was lost in the shuffle is A.J. Cole, who makes his second start in a week on Saturday at home against the Colorado Rockies.

"They can score in a hurry," Washington manager Dusty Baker said of the Rockies. "They can score a bunch in a hurry."

Cole, a right-hander, pitched in three games last year for the Nationals and made his first big league start in April 2015 at Atlanta. It did not go well, and Cole did not get another shot at starting for Washington until Monday night in Baltimore.

That is when he made the start after veteran right-hander Stephen Strasburg went on the disabled list.

Cole responded with an admirable effort as he went seven innings against the power-hitting Orioles, while giving up four runs and two homers.

That helped save the Nationals bullpen, which got another break Thursday when Max Scherzer went eight innings in a 4-0 victory over Baltimore.

Cole, from Florida, was drafted by the Nationals in the fourth round out of high school in 2010 and turned down a scholarship to the University of Miami to play pro ball.

He was 0-0 with a 5.79 ERA in three games last year with the Nationals, and one start. He was 5-6, 3.15 in 21 games (19 starts) last season for Triple-A Syracuse. Cole was with Syracuse this year before he was called up Monday to start for Washington.

Cole was 8-8, 4.26 in 22 starts for the Chiefs this year.

The Nationals began the series against the Rockies on Friday with a win and it began a stretch of a soft schedule down the stretch.

Washington faces teams from the weak National League East, along with home series against the Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Cole will be opposed Saturday afternoon by Jorge De La Rosa (8-7, 5.07 ERA), who is 5-2 with a 3.92 ERA in 11 starts versus Washington.

The Nationals continue to be energized by center fielder Trea Turner, who had two hits Friday and has 12 in the last four games.

"The kid's really fast," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "Guys like that they cause some problems when they get on base. Even on the contact play, the groundball to first. Most guys don't score on that."

Baker agreed.

"That's that old expression, speed kills," Baker said. "When you can run, you make people rush. And if people rush in this game most of the time they're not themselves and most of the time they're going to make mistakes.

"And that's what Trea does, any ball that he hits, you got to field it cleanly and throw it correctly. So there's no substitute for speed, you know how I like speed. I like speed even when i was young and got a lot of tickets. I love speed."

Preview: Orioles (70-58) at Yankees (66-61)

Game: 2
Venue: Yankee Stadium
Date: August 27, 2016 1:05 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees have not gained much ground in the wild-card race because they have not been playing the teams they are pursuing.

On Friday their first attempt to beat a team they were pursuing was successful and the Yankees get another chance to inch closer in the race Saturday afternoon when they face the Baltimore Orioles.

New York has won five of its last seven games and four of five from Baltimore at home this season. The Yankees will face the Orioles eight more times before the season ends.

New York is 3 1/2 games out of the second wild-card spot thanks to a 14-4 win Friday that featured another big night from Gary Sanchez.

"Guys are excited around here and we believe," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Sanchez fell a triple shy of the cycle during his fifth career game with three hits and highlighted his latest big night with a long two-run home run.

Sanchez is batting .403 and his 10 home runs equal the total he had with Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre.

Since he joined the Yankees on Aug. 3, they are a respectable 13-8, and the rookie catcher's big night helped them go a season-high five games over .500 at 66-61.

"We still got a chance at this thing," Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner said. "We're believe in ourselves and we got an important game tomorrow. We play all the teams ahead of us, we play them a lot the rest of the year. So we feel good about the place that we're in."

The Orioles have dropped four of five games in New York this season after winning four of six in Baltimore. Overall, the Orioles (70-58) have dropped seven of 11 since Aug. 15 when they last held a share of first place.

Besides failing to gain ground over the Yankees, the Orioles' lead over the other teams was reduced. The Orioles lead Detroit by one game, Seattle by two games and Kansas City and Houston by three games.

The Orioles will be hoping for a significantly better performance on the mound after Yovani Gallardo allowed eight runs and six hits in a career-low 1 1/3 innings.

Baltimore might have the right guy on the mound Saturday in Dylan Bundy, who is 5-3 with a 3.56 ERA in eight starts since being added to the rotation following the All-Star break.

His ERA is slightly inflated by a sub-par outing in Boston on Aug. 17 and when Bundy limited the damage while allowing a baserunner in five of six innings Monday in Baltimore it prompted high praise from Washington manager Dusty Baker.

"He reminds me of the old Mets, like Tom Seaver and Gary Gentry and those guys." Baker said. "He has one of the best curve balls we've seen. We heard he had great stuff, it was just a matter of his command."

After Yankees pitcher Luis Cessa allowed two home runs to Manny Machado among five hits in six effective innings on Friday, Chad Green will make his seventh start for the Yankees and third since correcting some things in the minors. Since returning from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre Aug. 15, Green has allowed one earned run in 12 innings during his last two starts.

The right-hander followed up six outstanding innings with 11 strikeouts vs. Toronto by allowing one run and five hits in six innings during Sunday's 2-0 loss at the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

As a starting pitcher, Green is 2-3 with a 4.80 ERA and in half of his starts he has allowed one run or less while completing six innings. His 11.10 strikeouts per nine innings is the sixth-highest in the majors among pitchers with at least 30 innings as starting pitchers.

The Orioles will likely be without center fielder Adam Jones Saturday. Jones was in the starting lineup Friday despite his hamstring cramping up Thursday but departed with a strained left hamstring in the second inning.

Manager Buck Showalter did not think it would require a stint on the disabled list, but it was indicative of a frustrating night for the Orioles.

"Let's try and get this correct and make that big push," Jones said. "At this point in time in the season missing more than a few games would hurt the team."

Preview: Twins (49-79) at Blue Jays (72-56)

Game: 2
Venue: Rogers Centre
Date: August 27, 2016 1:07 PM EDT

TORONTO -- The Minnesota Twins hope that Ervin Santana can accomplish something Saturday that a team meeting could not.

That is, end their losing streak.

After manager Paul Molitor addressed the team before the opener of a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, the Twins had their losing string reach eight games.

The Blue Jays hit four home runs in defeating the Twins 15-8.

Santana (6-10, 3.39 ERA) will get the start Saturday against Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman (9-5, 4.47 ERA).

Santana would seem to be a good candidate to give the Twins a win. He has a 1.72 ERA in his past 10 starts. Then again, he is 0-4 against the Blue Jays since 2011.

"I don't think Ervin is going to change what he does," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "A young guy like Pat (Dean, who took the loss Friday), without a lot of experience coming in here, it's hard to be the same guy.

"Ervin doesn't seem to change, environment to environment, team to team. He knows these guys, he's faced them. They've got a nice environment going here, but hopefully he can hold it down and we can have another good offensive day."

The right-hander took the loss Sunday at Kansas City despite allowing two runs, five hits and a walk while striking out a season-best 10 in seven innings.

Santana did not factor in the decision when he faced the Blue Jays on May 19 at Target Field, allowing two runs, four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in eight innings.

He is 6-7 with a 3.61 ERA in 18 career starts against the Blue Jays.

Stroman is on a bit of a roll himself. He is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in his past six starts.

He did not factor in the decision Sunday when he held the Cleveland Indians to seven hits and one run in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out nine as the Blue Jays lost 3-2.

Stroman is 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA in two career starts against the Twins, including a 1-0 record with a 1.17 ERA in one start this season.

With the win on Friday, the Blue Jays moved into first place in the American League East by one game over the Boston Red Sox, who lost 6-3 to the Kansas City Royals.

Toronto's sputtering offense had a big game with Justin Smoak and Russell Martin leading the way with five RBIs and a home run each. It was just the ninth time in their past 18 games in which the Blue Jays have scored more than three runs.

"I feel like day in and day out we have a good approach," Smoak said. "It's just as a team we hadn't really gone in there and caught on fire. Hopefully, now that will help us out a bit."

The Twins dropped to 30 games below .500.

"I told them it's not a matter of me trying to convince them how many games we can win," Molitor said of his team meeting. "I just talked about what was left on the table here over the last 35 games. You're looking for guys to just step up and take the challenge head-on."

Preview: Cubs (82-45) at Dodgers (71-57)

Game: 2
Venue: Dodger Stadium
Date: August 27, 2016 4:05 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts enjoys challenges. Roberts couldn't agree more with the old cliche to be the best, you have to beat the best.

Roberts is hoping the Dodgers can bounce back from defeat Saturday when they host the Chicago Cubs again. The Cubs rallied for a 6-4 victory in 10 innings Friday night at Dodger Stadium.

Kris Bryant's two-run homer, his second long-ball of the game, was the difference as the Cubs improved to a major league best 82-45.

"This is fun. This is the class of the National League this year and they've got a lot of talent," Roberts said of the Cubs. "They're playing good baseball and have all year. I think we've been playing pretty well ourselves. Every day is a test, but to play these guys we've got to play well."

Dodgers rookie Julio Urias will be tested again against the Cubs. Urias (4-2, 3.95 ERA) made his second career start against the Cubs on June 2 at Wrigley Field and it wasn't a good outing. He allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits in five innings. Urias served up three home runs.

However, Cubs manager Joe Maddon believes younger pitchers mature and deliver a better game at home as they gain more experience.

"It's a maturation process, honestly," Maddon said. "I've seen that with young pitchers that pitch well at home but then not on the road. Then, they pitch good at both places. It's just a matter of time. It's a comfort thing. You go to some place new you're uncomfortable. You're playing at home all of the time, you're much more comfortable with the environment.

"As you're moving along, even as a manager and coach, you become more comfortable in your environment."

Jason Hammel (13-6, 3.07 ERA) will get the start for the Cubs. Hammel got shelled in his last outing, serving up a season-high 10 runs (six earned) in 3 1/3 innings in an 11-4 rout by the Colorado Rockies.

Hammel is 2-6 with a 4.80 ERA in 17 games (13 starts) against the Dodgers. He is winless in eight games (five starts) at Dodger Stadium. Hammel last faced Los Angeles on May 30 at Wrigley Field but was forced out of the contest after two scoreless innings with cramping in his right hamstring.

Hammel has allowed three fewer runs in 20 of his 24 starts and held batters to a .184 average with runners in scoring position.

Chicago has beaten the Dodgers (71-57) in four of five games this season. The Cubs took three of four when the two teams met Memorial Day weekend in Chicago.

The Cubs are 5-2 on their nine-game road trip. They have captured 20 of their last 24 games since July 31 and are 8-2 in the last 10 road games.

Another challenge for the Dodgers is slowing Bryant, who leads the National League with 35 home runs and 107 runs.

"We have many guys that are having really good years," Maddon said, adding that he believes Bryant has prospered because of a more compact swing.

Preview: Pirates (65-61) at Brewers (56-72)

Game: 3
Venue: Miller Park
Date: August 27, 2016 7:10 PM EDT

MILWAUKEE -- Two potential future aces will be on display when the Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers continue their four-game series on Saturday evening at Miller Park.

Right-hander Jamison Tallion has looked every bit as good as advertised through the first 12 starts of his career. He's coming off one of his best outings of the season, having struck out a career-high eight batters while holding the Astros to two ruuns, four hits and a walk in eight innings.

Tallion leaned on his two-seam fastball in that outing.

"I was getting more swing and misses, more ground balls and better pitch efficiency when I throw the two-seam (fastball)," Taillon said. "Whereas, I don't get away with mistakes when I throw the four-seam. (The coaches) told me try it out, and I just ran with it."

It was the third time that Tallion worked eight innings this season. For the year, he has thrown 74 for the Pirates on top of 61 2/3 for Triple-A Indianapolis earlier this season.

His career high for innings worked came in 2013 when he threw 147 1/3, but as of now, the Pirates don't seem inclined to worry about his workload.

"We're playing it by ear," Taillon told a Pittsburgh radio station earlier this week. "If there was one perfect way to do it, we would be doing it, but I think we have to really go off of what we're seeing and what we're feeling. I have to be honest with them and tell them how I'm feeling, how I'm recovering between starts. I think there's going to be some two-way communication back and forth.

"As far as I've been told, I'm good to pitch."

Milwaukee will turn to right-hander Jimmy Nelson, who snapped a six-game losing streak his last time out by holding the Rockies to two runs despite seven hits in six innings.

During his losing streak, Nelson had posted an 8.04 ERA.

"I think this was just kind of the next step in all that," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "The big thing was that he threw a ton of strikes tonight -- 71 strikes in 95 pitches. He was pounding the zone very well tonight. He put them in swing mode a little bit because of that. He did a nice job, especially after the first two innings. The next four innings he did a really good job. He pitched well."

Nelson's strike-to-ball ratio resulted in no walks -- something Nelson hadn't done all season, but he was happiest about working six full innings for the first time since July 16.

"I feel like I've been doing five-and-dies for friggin' two or three months," Nelson said. "It definitely was nice. More so for the bullpen guys. I honestly felt really good, like I could have gone back out there. With the tempo and effort of my delivery, I felt like I didn't really get tired out there. Even later in the game, my pitches didn't drift up in the zone or anything like that."

Preview: Phillies (59-69) at Mets (65-63)

Game: 2
Venue: Citi Field
Date: August 27, 2016 7:10 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets look to build some more momentum Saturday night, while the Philadelphia Phillies might be looking for some name tags.

The Mets and Phillies are scheduled to play the middle contest of their three-game series Saturday night at Citi Field. The Mets won Friday's opener 9-4.

The victory was the fifth in the last six games for the Mets (65-63), who are making a last-second dash for one of the National League wild card spots. New York is 3 1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild card.

It is the best six-game stretch for the Mets since they went 5-1 from July 2 through July 7. They went 13-24 between July 8 and Aug. 19 before taking the final two contests of a four-game series at the San Francisco Giants and two of three from the Cardinals in St. Louis.

"We know that any little thing can get us going," said infielder Wilmer Flores, who hit a grand slam Friday night. "I think those games on the road were good for us, (got) us going. So we've got to keep it going."

The Phillies (59-69), who have lost six of their last nine, are expected to greet their newest player Saturday. Veteran catcher A.J. Ellis, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday in the deal that sent popular veteran backstop Carlos Ruiz to the west coast, is scheduled to join the Phillies.

The Ruiz deal basically completed the dismantling of the championship-era Phillies. First baseman Ryan Howard is the only player remaining from the 2007-2011 Phillies, who won five straight NL East titles, two pennants and the 2008 World Series.

Howard lost his starting job earlier this season and his contract expires at the end of this season, which means the slumping veteran -- he went 0-for-3 on Friday as his average fell to .196 -- will surely join the likes of Ruiz, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino as ex-Phillies.

"You play with guys your entire career and now you're seeing them in different uniforms," Howard said. "It's definitely going to be something to get used to, but that's baseball. That's the business aspect of it. Teams made moves and that's what happens."

Right-hander Noah Syndergaard (11-7, 2.61 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Mets against Phillies right-hander Jeremy Hellickson.

Syndergaard had his best start in weeks Sunday, when he earned the win after allowing two hits over eight scoreless innings in the Mets' 2-0 victory over the Giants. It was the longest start for Syndergaard since he threw a career-high 8 1/3 innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 15. He went 3-5 with a 4.09 ERA in his 10 subsequent starts.

Hellickson (10-7, 3.60) looks to win his fifth straight decision. He earned the victory in his most recent start Aug. 20, when he gave up two runs over seven innings as the Phillies beat the Cardinals 4-2. Hellickson is 4-0 with a 2.35 ERA in his last six starts.

Preview: Padres (53-75) at Marlins (67-61)

Game: 2
Venue: Marlins Park
Date: August 27, 2016 7:10 PM EDT

MIAMI -- Clayton Richard hopes his third time as a San Diego Padres' starter will result in the charm of a victory Saturday night.

In his second go-round with the Padres after one and a half seasons as a reliever with the Chicago Cubs, Richard will start the Padres' second game of their series against the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park.

Since returning to the Padres as a free agent Aug. 6, the left-hander made two relief appearance appearances before joining the rotation Aug. 14. Richard has made two quality starts, allowing two earned runs, five hits in 11 innings but was tagged with two losses.

"You don't know what comes along in baseball but I'll be prepared for whatever comes my way," Richard said of his different pitching roles.

Richard, 32, was part of the Padres rotation during a 4 1/2 stretch that ended in 2013. He had a 40-39 record before a shoulder injury forced him to miss the 2014 season.

With the Padres languishing in last in the NL East, Richard, 32, could become a dependable veteran in a rotation that already has experienced the departures of James Shields and Andrew Cashner in 2016 and lost opening day starter Tyson Ross to a shoulder injury in April.

Richard's scheduled start on Saturday will allow Marlins manager Don Mattingly to give recently acquired Jeff Francoeur another appearance in the lineup.

Francoeur was slated to platoon in right field with Ichiro Suzuki against left-handers during injured slugger Giancarlo Stanton's absence but Mattingly started him Friday, when Miami faced right-hander Jarred Cosart. Mattingly said Suzuki, 42, needed a break after starting 10 of 11 games since Stanton suffered a groin injury on Aug. 13.

Acquired from the Atlanta Braves in a three-team trade on Wednesday, Francoeur is eager to help the NL Wild Card contending Marlins.

"It means a lot to come to a place where -- A, they want you but B, when you're in the pennant race," Francoeur said. "There's nothing better than that. That's why you play."

Francoeur joins a roster with limited post-season experience. A veteran of eight major league clubs, Francoeur had post-season stints with the Braves in 2005 and the Texas Rangers in 2010.

The Marlins' playoff drought extends to their second World Series championship in 2003. Suzuki, 2B Dee Gordon, closer Fernando Rodney and Martin Prado are the only notable Marlins with post-season experience.

Encouraged by his recent outing against Pittsburgh, the Marlins will start right-hander Jose Urena against the Padres on Saturday. Urena was the winning pitcher, lasting six innings, allowing two runs and four hits as the Marlins finished a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Aug. 21.

Preview: Royals (67-61) at Red Sox (71-57)

Game: 2
Venue: Fenway Park
Date: August 27, 2016 7:10 PM EDT

BOSTON -- The second contest of the three-game series between the Boston Red Sox and the Kansas City Royals on Saturday at Fenway park features two of the hottest pitchers in baseball.

Royals left-hander Danny Duffy, who has won 10 straight decisions, faces Boston southpaw David Price, who has won his past three starts.

Duffy is one win shy of tying Kansas City's record for consecutive wins held by Rich Gale (1980) and Paul Splittorff (1977-78). He has emerged as a true ace with a record of 11-1 and a league-leading 2.66 ERA this season after starting the season in the bullpen. Duffy made 14 relief appearances before his first start May 15.

Duffy's latest masterpiece was a 2-1 victory against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. He allowed one run on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. Now he has to face the best offense in baseball as the Red Sox lead the majors in runs scored and just about every major offensive category.

"You're playing against some of the best players in the world and Boston's offense is no pushover," Royals manager Ned Yost said after a 6-3 victory in the series opener Friday. "But Danny's been throwing the ball extremely well. We have a lot of confidence in Danny and Danny has a lot of confidence in himself. So it should be a fun matchup."

The Royals have won 11 of their past 12 and 16 of their past 19 games to pull within three of the Baltimore Orioles for the second wild card in the American League.

The Red Sox have lost three in a row and trail the Toronto Blue Jays by one game for first place in the American League East. That's why the Red Sox need Price to continue to pitch like he has in a few of his recent starts.

The left-hander has been among the leaders in hits allowed all season and is 12-8 with a 4.00 ERA. But he has also been among the American League leaders in strikeouts. He has allowed one run in his past 14 innings over two starts and the last time he took the mound, he shut out the Tampa Bay Rays on two hits over eight innings Monday.

He leads the majors with nine starts of at least eight innings.

"To get that number of innings, you're keeping your club in the game, giving your club a chance to win," pitching coach Carl Willis told the Boston Globe. "I know a lot of the numbers aren't where he wants them to be, but those (innings) speak to what kind of pitcher he is."

Duffy hasn't been the only hot Royals pitcher of late. Although they allowed a ninth-inning run Friday, the Royals bullpen had a streak of 41 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball -- a franchise record.

"They've done a great job, they really have," Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer said after Friday's victory. "Especially on a night like tonight to come in there in the sixth, seventh inning and shut the door like they did was huge for us. I think we all like that that streak ended because it was a win and they got rid of the streak, so we don't got to worry about that anymore.

"They've been the backbone of our team, that's what's been the strength of our team. We try to do whatever we can to get leads and hand them off to them."
