Preview: Phillies (41-47) at Rockies (39-47)

Game: 3
Venue: Coors Field
Date: July 09, 2016 8:40 PM EDT

DENVER -- Two pitchers considered fundamental building blocks for their respective teams will be on the mound Saturday night at Coors Field.

Tyler Anderson will be seeking his first career win for the Colorado Rockies and will oppose Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Jerad Eickhoff

Anderson has pitched well in five career starts, posting a 3.03 ERA but he is 0-3 due to little run support. Colorado has scored a combined four runs when Anderson has been in games and has lost his last four starts.

Anderson has done his part, allowing three runs or less in each start and two or less four times. He also has pitched at least six innings three times and made it past the fifth in each start.

Eickhoff is one the centerpieces of last year's deadline trade that sent Cole Hamels to the Texas Rangers. Like Anderson he has a respectable ERA of 3.30 and a losing record at 6-9.

Eickhoff has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last seven starts, including Monday against Atlanta when he allowed two runs and five hits in 7 2/3 innings. During his last seven starts, he is 4-2 with a 2.25 ERA (11 earned runs, 39 hits and 44 innings)

The 26-year-old, is one of several promising young starters in the Phillies' rotation. He follows Vince Velasquez, who gave up eight hits and two runs in six innings Friday night and was the winning pitcher in the Phillies' 5-3 victory.

Velasquez is 8-2 with a 3.32 ERA in 15 starts with 74 hits allowed in 78 2/3 innings, 26 walks and 93 strikeouts. He was on the disabled list June 10-27 with a biceps strain, time off that manager Pete Mackanin said gave Velasquez, 24, who is in his first full season in the majors, time to regroup mentally as well as let his arm heal.

"He's going through a learning process," Mackanin said. "He's got the stuff to be very successful, obviously. He's not really a polished pitcher, but he's got good enough stuff to have that good of numbers. It gives you an indication of how good he can be in the future."

Young arms has been the theme of the series so far for both teams.

Jon Gray preceded Anderson Friday and allowed three hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings. He was charged with two of the runs on pinch hitter Tommy Joseph's three-run homer off Jake McGee.

Gray is in his first full season in the majors and like Eickhoff and Anderson and Velasquez, he is gaining valuable experience while learning to ply his craft at the highest level and not being unsettled by his surroundings. For Gray, that means adapting to Coors Field, a challenging place to pitch.

"I've come to like throwing here," Gray said. "Just the way the plate looks, everything else looks, (how) the mound feels. I just have a comfortable feeling now. I'm not sure how many starts, but I've had a few. I'm comfortable with it."

Preview: Twins (30-56) at Rangers (54-34)

Game: 3
Venue: Globe Life Park in Arlington
Date: July 09, 2016 9:05 PM EDT

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers, in dire need of effective starting pitching, will turn to veteran Kyle Lohse in Saturday's game against Minnesota.

Lohse will have his contract purchased from Triple-A Round Rock and be added to the roster on Saturday.

The right-handed Lohse is not expected to be a 37-year-old savior for the Rangers' depleted rotation, but he will be asked to bring a level of competency.

"This is a league that we need professional starts," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "We're going to find where those professional starts are for us. This is a production league.

Nick Martinez (1-2, 6.45 ERA) was originally scheduled to start Saturday against Minnesota's Ricky Nolasco (3-7, 5.26).

But the Rangers announced after Friday night's 6-5 win over the Twins that Martinez would be optioned to Double-A Frisco and Lohse brought up.

Lohse was signed to a minor-league contract on May 14 and had been in the mix to take the place of one of the Rangers' three injured starters: Yu Darvish, Colby Lewis and Derek Holland.

Lohse is 2-5 with a 5.06 ERA in 10 games at Round Rock. However, it's his 15 years of major league experience the Rangers are counting on.

In the majors, Lohse is 147-141 with a 4.37 ERA. He's started 416 big league games for the Twins, Reds, Phillies, Cardinals and most recently the Brewers (2013-15).

"We're going to give an opportunity for Lohse to come up here and take his hand at giving us the best professional start he possibly can," Banister said.

The Rangers also sent starter Chi Chi Gonzalez back to Triple-A Round Rock on Friday. Like the struggling Martinez, Gonzalez had another ineffective performance Thursday.

"Look, we're going to need five starters," Banister said. "The two guys going down today, they're obviously still in that mix for us to be able to start. But obviously we've got to be better in that category. Better than we have been lately."

The Twins' lineup showed some potency in Friday's loss. Miguel Sano hit a three-run blast and Kennys Vargas hit two doubles.

The Twins were able to send Rangers ace Cole Hamels to an early exit for the second time in a week. But they weren't able to capitalize late against a stingy Texas bullpen.

"Winnable game. We kind of beat ourselves the second half of the game," Twins manager Paul Molitor said.

"We made Hamels work. I don't think he'll say he was as sharp as he's been the last couple starts, but you get a guy up that high in pitch count through five, you did a nice job. We got a couple big hits there, Kurt (Suzuki) put one in play and then took advantage there. Miguel (Sano) hit a first-pitch changeup, which put us on top."

The Twins will likely be without center fielder Byron Buxton, who suffered a right knee contusion after crashing into the wall in the first inning of Friday's game. The Twins classified Buxton as day-to-day.

After the game, Buxton sounded confident that the injury is nothing more than a bone bruise. He won't know for sure until an MRI is performed Saturday.

"Pretty confident," Buxton said. "I never want to go into thinking something negative, so keep positive thoughts and just try to get back as quick as possible and help us win some games."

'Indians host Yankees'

New York Yankees at Cleveland Indians July 9, 4:10 EST

The Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees get it on in the third of this four game set at Progressive Field. According to opening odds the Indians are -$1.54 home favorites with the total set at 8.5 across all shops.

No surprise Indians are solid favorites with ace Danny Salazar trading pitches with C.C. Sabathia. The Cleveland right-hander boasts a 10-3 record, 2.36 ERA and is undefeated in his last seven trips to the mound. Matching that, the Indians have a near perfect 6-1 record at home with the hurler and 10-1 streak in front of the home audience dating back to last season. On the other side, the Yankees' left-hander C.C. Sabathia (5-6, 3.48 ERA) is 0-2 his last three trips to the mound with a whopping 8.31 ERA.

When handicapping this contest a few betting nuggets to ponder. Indians are on a 9-2, 13-3 stretch vs a southpaw starter, Yankees lost both vs Tribe last season handing the ball to Sabathia and have lost three of his last four road starts.
