NEWSLETTER Major League Baseball Prediction From Robert Ferringo

Take Atlanta (-135) over Chicago Cubs (4 p.m., Saturday, July 12)

I won an easy totals play with Belgium-Argentina playing ‘under’ last Saturday, and now I want to hand out another free pick winner on the diamond. The Cubs have basically given up on life. This team had some fight in it through the first three months of the season. But Theo Epstein is just staying the course on his long-term rebuilding plan for this franchise. And ever since he traded away Chicago’s two best pitchers for prospects, the club has been in the tank. They had lost all five games since the trade heading into Wednesday’s action. And I think it’s only going to get worse once they get back to Wrigley. The fans all know the season is essentially over, and the players do as well. The Braves, however, are locked in a tight fight at the top of the N.L. East. Atlanta has been playing well lately, winning nine of 12 games overall, and they should win this series in Chicago. That includes this game. The Braves will be facing Edwin Jackson in this matchup. It’s never a bad idea to bet against Jackson, who is sporting an ERA over 5.00 and a 13-27 record over the past two seasons with the Cubs. Jackson’s dumped six of his last nine starts overall, and the Braves had their way with him down in Atlanta back on May 11. They won 5-2 despite a rare quality start out of Jackson. I think the Braves will do even more damage here. Atlanta is countering with Mike Minor, who is coming off an excellent start against the Mets. The Cubs are just 28-59 in their last 87 games against a team with a winning record, and they are in a free fall. Take the Braves.

(973) DETROIT TIGERS at (974) KANSAS CITY ROYALS

Take: (974) KANSAS CITY ROYALS -125

One of the things I’ve always liked doing is trying to get on a roll with a team or a pitcher, and if it works, I’ll just keep playing them or him. The logic here is that when this theory in practice works out, it’s not unusual to pick up several winners in succession. The flip side is that if it doesn’t pan out, the most you’ll lose is one game.

I’m going to see about getting on a roll with James Shields. Shields has a good record, so it’s not as though this has been a downer of a season for the veteran righty. But he hasn’t been quite as effective as is his norm from a metrics standpoint and in watching most of his starts, there’s been something that I can’t quite put my finger on, but he just hasn’t been the usual Shields in my opinion. But that all changed last time out as Shields put together a superb effort at Tampa Bay, clearly one of his best games of the season.

Shields should have plenty of motivation here as his last showing against the Tigers back in early May was downright ugly. Shields somehow managed to pitch into the seventh inning in that game, but he was knocked around by Detroit. One thing that’s pretty clear about Shields is that he’s a pretty intense competitor, so I’m assuming he’s going to be pretty revved up for this start.

The rest of the Royals ought to be fired up as well. They pretty much let one get away on Friday night, which was fine with me as I had the Tigers. But I also know this was one game Detroit was lucky to win. The Royals squandered several scoring opportunities, and they were certainly on the wrong side of an interference call on a stolen base in the bottom of the eighth inning that might well have been the biggest play of the game.

Rick Porcello finally cooled off last start for Detroit following a spectacular run of three straight scoreless starts. Porcello has bounced back smartly from his lesser starts this season, so by no means do I see him getting tattooed here. But in spite of a decent history against KC, I can see the Royals putting a few scores up tonight.

If this is close at the finish line, that’s where the Royals enjoy a more substantial edge. The Tigers managed to hold on last night, but they were kind of fortunate to do so. The team has very few weaknesses and overall the Tigers are probably the best team in the game. But that one fatal flaw is the bullpen and I can see that being an issue tonight, particularly with both Chamberlain and Nathan having to work hard on Friday night.

The number here is a bit of an indicator. The Tigers will be a square dog tonight. There’s no question that at this number most of the tickets are going to be written on Detroit. While the market is not a determining factor for me as far as whether or not to play a game, I’ve never made a secret of the fact that I do like the idea of fading the public when they fall in love with an underdog. That’s the bonus here, as I already liked the idea of backing Shields. I’ll side with the Royals to get a win this evening.

MLB Comp Pick for Friday, July 11, 2014: 7:15 PM ET

MLB (961) PITTSBURGH PIRATES VS (962) CINCINNATI REDS

Take: (962) CINCINNATI REDS

Reason: Your Bonus Play for Saturday, July 12, 2014 is in the NL contest between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds. The Pirates are in a four team race for the NL Central as they sit four games back of leader Milwaukee. The Pirates start veteran Charlie Morton today who has a good ERA (3.10) and Whip (1.18) despite a losing record of 5-9. The Pirates just haven't played all that well with Morton on the hill, going just 16-35 in his last 51 road starts as a dog and 2-7 away lost nine overall. The Reds will counter with Mike Leake. Leake also has a good ERA (3.42) and WHIP (1.20), though only a .500 record of 7-7. Leake really struggled through most of June, but since June 15 hasn't allowed more than three runs in his last four starts. The Reds are also 13-3 in their last 16 games against teams with winning records. Reds have pretty much owned the Bucs of late, going 7-1 in the last eight meetings and 4-1 in Leake's last five against Pitt. Your Bonus Play for Saturday is on the Cincinnati Reds.

Atlanta Braves vs. Chicago Cubs

1* Bonus Play on the Atlanta Braves -128

The Braves are worth laying some coin on Saturday. Atlanta starts Mike Minor (2-5, 4.54 ERA) who is coming off a positive outing, holding the Mets to two runs and two hits over seven innings on Monday. Minor has had success against the Cubs in five career starts, the southpaw is 5-0 with a 3.56 ERA, limiting Starlin Castro to three hits in 15 at-bats and Anthony Rizzo to a single in six. He also has 37 strikeouts against them. Chicago counters with right-hander Edwin Jackson (5-9, 5.05); Jackson was stuck with the loss when he gave up four earned runs over seven innings to the Red Sox on Monday. Jackson is 0-3 with a 3.89 ERA in six games started against the Braves lifetime. Despite earning the win over the Braves yesterday, the Cubs are still one of the majors' worst hitting teams at home at .233. Note that Atlanta has taken 11 of the last 18 games in this series. The Braves best hitters have had success against Jackson as well; Freddie Freeman entered the season 7 for 11 with two homers against the right-hander while Justin Upton is 6 for 11 with one homer and two doubles. Atlanta is 8-5 as a road favorite in the -125 to -150 range. Consider the road side here.

DMack's Bonus Play is on the Tampa Bay Rays

The next ten days are going to be key for Tampa Bay. The team still thinks it can sneak into the playoffs but to do so, they have to win these home division games. The Jays are just 2-6 in their L8 and today's starter, Drew Hutchinson, is nothing special and has a 6.91 ERA in three LT starts vs. Tampa Bay. Joe Odorizzi has been good all year and has just not gotten any kind of run support whatsover. The Ray righty is off three straight quality starts and a couple of runs against Hutchinson should put him back in the win column.
