If nothing else, I’m pretty stubborn. When I know a pitcher is getting lucky rather than actually throwing it well, I am basically unwilling to stop fading him in anticipation of a regression to the norm that’s inevitable. This strategy works more often than not, but it’s sure not infallible.

Nevertheless, that’s where I am with Mariners righty Chris Young. His ERA/SIERA split is the biggest in the game. Young has a more than respectable 3.30 ERA. But SIERA, which I find to be a far more accurate indicator of a pitcher’s performance, says Young is getting phenomenally lucky. His SIERA is a grotesque 6.04. And make no mistake, Young is pitching with a horseshoe firmly implanted you know where. His BABIP is an absurd .192, his BB/K ratio is terrible and he’s got a sky high 57% fly ball rate. What this means is that Young simply cannot sustain what he’s doing. Well, yeah actually he can, but he’s just not supposed to. I’m pretty determined to try and beat him whenever I can, as long as the price isn’t prohibitive.

Drew Smyly will throw for Detroit, and the Tigers lefty has been lousy in his last two outings, with command issues the culprit. He could;t find the plate two starts back at Cleveland, and found way too much of the plate in a disastrous outing on Monday at Oakland. Make no mistake, there’s some concern over this heading into this start. But Smyly is a pretty good pitcher for the most part, so I’m going to bank on his ability to rebound with a decent showing tonight.

It’s interesting to note that Young has enjoyed great success against both Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. But those two are lighting up everyone right now and it’s also worth noting that the current Young is not the same pitcher as the Young we saw a few years ago. So I’m not putting much weight in the past performance hitter vs. pitcher numbers, and they’re small sample regardless.

The Tigers have a better record against lefties than righties this season, but in fact they’re more productive against righties, and by a pretty substantial margin. Of late, Detroit has been mauling righties and they’ve been an incredible road team since Opening Day. The Mariners have been a better team on the road than at Safeco. But more than anything, I am bound and determined to beat Chris Young, and I’m confident tonight’s the night to accomplish that feat. This game is on my personal ticket for Saturday and I’m spotting what I believe is a reasonable price with the Tigers.
