OTTAWA +109 over N.Y. Rangers

OT included. 3:00 PM EST. We’re not going to go over this again. You can read our write-up in this series and out write-up in Game 1 of this series to read our take and it has not changed one bit. The Senators were the better team in Game 1, which comes as no surprise to us. Why this market keeps undervaluing the Senators is beyond us but we’re going to continue to try and take advantage. Win or lose here, that the Sens are a dog again is insane. Period.

Pittsburgh +129 over WASHINGTON

While we have the Caps to win the East, we’re not adverse to switching gears when we trust it’s warranted. Washington’s loss in Game 1 is a massively big deal as far as we’re concerned. Talent wise, Washington can match up with any team in the NHL and then some. Mentally speaking however, they had to win Game 1 but instead they showed that they’re still not ready to take that next step. They are a bunch of dandelion puffs once again.

Pittsburgh made quick work of Columbus in the first round so they were off for a few days while Washington was sharp off a solid series victory over the pesky, quick and talented Maple Leafs. Washington looked sharper than Pittsburgh for sure. They had the puck more and they created more chances but they still lost. We’re not going to promise a Penguins win but we will promise a better effort from the Pens here because you’re not going to see back-to-back games play out like that from the Pens. They’re gonna bring it here. Furthermore, Sidney Crosby played like a man on a mission. You could see it in his eyes after the 2nd goal, not just how badly he wants a 3rd cup, but how badly he wants to beat this Washington team. “Caps in 6, Caps in 5, Caps in 6” is all the Pens and Crosby heard for days leading up to the series. You don’t think that shit bothers him? He’s a weirdo. Hockey is all he cares about.

Additionally, we’re starting to think that the Penguins are in Braden Holtby’s head or that they have found a weakness in Holtby’s game. Holtby was yanked against Pittsburgh the last time they played prior to these playoffs and the goals he let in on Thursday were not beauties either. Aside from that, the entire Capitals team has mental hurdles to overcome that the Penguins do not. The Caps have to be thinking about the possibility of being down 0-2 going to Pittsburgh. They get ousted early every season and now instead of being up 1-0 and being relaxed, they’re down 1-0 and can’t be in the least bit relaxed. All the pressure is on the favorite here and then there’s Brooks Orpik too. Orpik plays for the Washington Capitals and even in the most dire of times, he will have to come onto the ice and when that happens, there’s a strong chance he’s going to screw something up. Give a massive psychological edge to Pittsburgh, as they’re playing to win here while the Capitals are in the “playing not to lose” mindset.

Lastly, the Penguins are likely going to get another healthy body back here, as Carl Hagelin was full-go in practice Friday playing with Phil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin. He’s an impact player that instantly makes the Penguins better. The Caps are a great hockey team but Game 1 revealed once again that they don’t have that mojo that the Penguins have. Now it’s the Pens that smell a wounded prey and when Crosby and company smell a wounded prey, get the f**k out of their way.

Pittsburgh +109 over MIAMI

The Pirates have a worse record than the Marlins, which inflates the value here on the dog. In this week’s podcast, we talk extensively about the luck driven numbers in baseball and the unlucky numbers too. Baseball, by far, is the most stat driven sport because it’s all numbers, which provides us with opportunities daily. This is one of them because the Pirates have been unlucky and the proof is in the pudding. Pittsburgh has struck out fewer times than every team in baseball besides the Red Sox. What that means is they are putting the ball in play and thus, they should be scoring as many runs as the Red Sox (minus park factors). Last night, the Buccos put up 12 runs in Miami and figure to put up a bunch more here on Dan Straily (RHP).

Straily found surprising success in the second half of last year when he made strides with his control, but he got plenty of help from strand percentage and hit percentage (including 21% for year against lefties). His fly-ball tendencies led to an NL-high 31 HR allowed, but luckily, 24 were solo shots. Issues with the long ball aren't going away and he'll be hard-pressed to post another sub-4.00 ERA in 2017. He’ll have value as a pup but he has none here against the Pirates and Ivan Nova (RHP).

Nova is 2-2 with a 2.00 ERA after four starts. He was quietly was one of the game's most skilled starters in the second half of 2016. Those skills were driven by his ability to pound the strike zone at a high rate while inducing groundballs at a high clip. In fact, his 3.40 ERA in the second half was backed by a nearly identical 3.49 xERA. He’s doing the same thing this year with one walk in 27 frames and when a pitcher can locate like that while working with Ray Searage, sky is the limit. Nova has 93 MPH heat to go along with a 0.89 WHIP and offers up so much more value here as a dog than the Fish offer up as the chalk.

Colorado -1½ +200 over ARIZONA

Arizona is at home, where they sport an 11-4 record. Zack Greinke has popularity, pedigree and some of the best numbers over the years among starting pitchers that puts him in the same company as guys like Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, Chris Sale, Dallas Keuchel, Jake Arietta and others. This season, Greinke has 31 K’s in 31 innings with a 2.93 ERA so it’s not like he’s off to a rough start. Why then is Zack Greinke and the D-Backs only -130 here? If Scherzer, Sale or Keuchel were at home and facing the Rockies, they would all be -170 or more. We’re not even going to attempt to break down the numbers here because it matters not. Being able to recognize something that looks off is part of our handicapping process and this one reeks of that.

What we know for sure is that Chase Field is a massive hitter’s park that ranks second to Coors Field in runs scored. Thus, instead of playing the Rockies at +120, we’re going for the kill here because the line says that the odds makers are pretty sure that Colorado is going to win. If they are that sure, it’s likely not going to be decided by one run, as this venue does not deliver its fair share of one-run games. This is strictly a case of playing the numbers and so we’re spotting 1½-runs with the Rocks on the Alternate Run Line.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Saturday's picks, betting odds and analysis
Apr 29, 2017 |
By: Andrew Caley

The baseball schedule can be tough to navigate for even a seasoned bettor. We break down all the day's MLB betting angles for you including picks, trends, weather and analysis to help you handicap the big leagues like a pro.

Double-Play Picks

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers (-160, 8.5)

The Rangers and Angels continue their AL West showdown this weekend after the Angels took the first game of the series 6-3 for their fifth consecutive win.
The Halos squeaked out three of those victories by a mark of 2-1 and are averaging just four runs per game during their current streak, which is just a tick higher than their season average of 3.86. That ranks 26th in the MLB.

The Angels face a tall task if they hope to extend the streak to six games as they go up against Rangers ace Yu Darvish.

Darvish has had a solid start to the season going 2-2 with a 3.03 ERA and 31 strikeouts. The right-hander has also face the Angels once this season, throwing seven innings of shutout ball, allowing five hits while ringing up 10 Los Angeles batters.

While the Rangers offense has struggled this season (except for when it comes to hitting dingers), they should be able to succeed against Angels starter Jesse Chavez, who has a 4.12 ERA and allowed a home run in three of his last four outings.

Pick: Rangers -160

Atlanta Braves at Milwaukee Brewers (-120, 9)

The Milwaukee Brewers offense led by Eric Thames has been the talk of this young season, but it was the Braves who outslugged the Brewers 10-8 in Game 1 of their three-game weekend series.

The Brewers rank second in runs scored this season at 5.33 per game, second in OPS at .806 and first in home runs at 43 thanks to the ridiculously hot start from Thames, who has taken the league by storm since his return from Korea, leading the majors in home runs with 11 and OBP at a whopping 1.354.

The new and power-happy Brewers lineup has been a boon for Over bettors going 10-1 O/U in their last 11 games including 5-0 in the last five, in which they have averaged a huge 8.2 runs per game.

Meanwhile the Braves offense hasn’t been too shabby, scoring 8.3 runs per game in their last three, cashing the over in each game. The Over is also 5-0 in the Braves last five games against NL Central teams.

Throw in the fact this game features a pitching matchup of Jamie Garcia (4.24 ERA) and Jimmy Nelson (4.56 ERA) and it feels like the trend should continue.

Pick: Over 9

Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking: Zack Greinke, Arizona Diamondbacks (2-2, 2.93 ERA, $132)

Maybe it just took Zack Greinke a year to get used to those Arizona uniforms, before he could get comfortable, because he is starting to look like his old self in 2017.

The Diamondbacks ace is 2-2 with a 2.93 ERA, while racking up 31 strikeouts to just six walks this season. Greinke has been even more dominant in his last two outings, allowing just two runs in 14 innings of work with 17 strikeouts and just one walk. The Diamondbacks are currently -126 faves against the visiting Rockies.

Slumping: Steven Wright, Boston Red Sox (1-2, 8.66 ERA, $-238)

It feels like a long time since Steven Wright was an All-Star for the Red Sox , even though it was just last July.

The knuckleballer has allowed four or more earned runs in three of his first four starts this season, resulting in a ballooned ERA of 8.66. Wright has struck out just nine batters, while walking four and he has really struggled in keeps runners off the base paths allowing an opponent’s OBP of .448.

Friday's Top Trends

* Royals are 0-8 in their last eight games overall and 0-11 in last 11 against division opponents. -125 vs. Twins.
* Astros are 10-0 in the last 10 meetings against the Athletics. Astros -153
* Yankees are 7-0 in their last seven vs. American League East opponents. -173 vs. Orioles today.
* Under is 7-0 in Giants last 7 games following a win. O/U: 7.5 vs. Padres.

Weather to Keep an Eye On

The pitchers could be given a hand at Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City where the Royals are scheduled to take on the Minnesota Twins. There will be a wind gusting in from center field at around 14-16 miles per hour. It will also be a humid night in KC with a chance of Thunderstorms in the region. There is also going to be a 70 percent chance of rain during the game. The total for this contest is currently 8.

Ump of the Day

Tim Timmons: Timmons has been one of the best Over umpires through the early part of the season with the number going Over the total in all four games he has officiated and is 5-0 in his last five games dating back to last season. He has a strike rate of 63.53 this seasaon. Timmons will be calling balls and strikes for today's game in Miami between the Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates. The total for the game is currently 8.

Preview: Rangers (48-28) at Senators (44-28)
Date: April 29, 2017 3:00 PM EDT

OTTAWA -- Even after taking a series lead, the Ottawa Senators were still trying to portray themselves as the underdog in an Eastern Conference semifinal battle against the New York Rangers.

"Their window to win a Stanley Cup is right now, and they have an opportunity right now to win the Cup," Senators winger Alex Burrows said on Friday of the Rangers. "They're not coming in just to play and see what happens."

What happened in Game 1 on Thursday was a 2-1 Ottawa win, thanks to captain Erik Karlsson's tiebreaking goal from behind the goal line that went in off the head of goalie Henrik Lundqvist with 4:11 left in the third period.

Afterward, Senators coach Guy Boucher said his team was motivated by the fear of being swept by the favored Rangers.

"It's a pretty good line," New York coach Alain Vigneault said with a smile Friday. "I'll remember it next time. It's a great line."

Burrows maintained the Senators feel like they're up against a juggernaut.

"They really have the mindset that they have the team to do it and I do believe they have the team to do it," Burrows said. "For us, we had some fear playing them (Thursday). We saw them play against Montreal (in the first round), the best team in our division, and they were able to win that series. We know what to expect. We know they're great team, but yes, we had some fear."

Ottawa outshot the Rangers 43-35 in the opener, with Lundqvist stopping all 21 shots he faced in the first period.

The Senators believe they have to keep firing the rubber at Lundqvist in Game 2, which is set for Saturday afternoon (3 p.m. ET) at Canadian Tire Centre.

"Did we get more shots than we expected to get? Yes," Ottawa coach Guy Boucher said. "But that was our plan. We know we can't beat this guy with 20 shots. We can't even beat him with 30 shots. We're going to need 40 shots and above. Even with over 40 shots and so many high-end scoring chances, we only got two in. That's how it's going to be."

Vigneault indicated he was satisfied with the way his team played 5-on-5, but while both teams were 1-for-4 on the power play, he felt the Senators picked up more momentum during their man-advantage situations.

Vigneault also said he may make lineup changes for Saturday, while Boucher is leaning toward sticking with the same group, even though winger Tom Pyatt has been cleared to return.

Pyatt could have ample opportunities to get back in the lineup over the next two weeks.

"We're prepared for a long series," Rangers center and former Senator Mika Zibanejad said. "We're prepared for a good series. We know it's a good team. If they want to try and low-ball themselves that's up to them, but they're good team, It's going to be a tough team to beat and we've got to make sure we really step it up and bring our A game

"It's an unlucky bounce that turns the game to 2-1 and a win for them. We've got to be on top of our game and make sure the bounces go our way."

Preview: Penguins (50-21) at Capitals (55-19)
Date: April 29, 2017 8:00 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- The rich could be getting richer as the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins look to take a 2-0 lead over the Washington Capitals in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series when they play Game 2 on Saturday night.

Carl Hagelin, who missed the last 16 games of the regular season and all six playoff contests thus far due to a lower-body injury, was a full-contact participant in Friday's practice.

The forward will be a game-time decision for Saturday's contest.

Hagelin's return would add more speed to a Pittsburgh offense that was outshot 35-21 in a 3-2 win over the Capitals on Thursday night. The Penguins have won 11 of their last 14 playoff games going back to last season.

"It was fun to be out there and it felt good," Hagelin said after Friday's practice. "It's a step in the right direction. It's a day-to-day thing. Hopefully it feels even better (Saturday)."

Hagelin had only six goals and 16 assists in 61 games during the regular season, but recorded three goals and four assists in last season's playoff series win versus Washington.

"Hagy's a great two-way player," teammate Phil Kessel told the team's website. "He's a fast player. He brings speed."

The Capitals, meanwhile, had won five straight series openers before Thursday's setback. They started slowly in Game 1 and eventually fell behind 2-0 when Sidney Crosby opened the second period with two goals in 64 seconds.

Washington rallied to tie the score in the third period and appeared to have the momentum before Pittsburgh's Nick Bonino netted what proved to be the game winner.

"What I like about our group is it was 2-0 and there was no panic," Capitals head coach Barry Trotz said. "There was absolutely no panic and you saw us building momentum and keep coming and coming. I thought we generated enough chances to not only tie it up, but maybe go ahead."

Including shots on goal, missed shots and blocked shots, the Capitals totaled 83 attempts to 41 for Pittsburgh. The Penguins mustered only 21 shots on net and Braden Holtby said that two of the goals were ones he is capable of stopping.

"I thought he was fine, but he didn't think he was as good as he could be," Trotz said, "But I do know this. Hh is guy who responds and he's going to be better, he's going to be better (Saturday). That's good for us."

Eighty-seven times an NHL team has lost the first two games of a series at home, and only 18 of those teams came back to win the set.

The Penguins will be looking to create more scoring chances Saturday night and therefore keep the puck away from Alex Ovechkin, who scored his fourth goal of the playoffs in Game 1.

"We think we're at our best when we control territory and that's something that we've been working on with our players and talking to our players about," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. "And just doing a better job of hanging onto pucks in the offensive zone and forcing teams to have to expend energy defending us."

The Capitals are 14-11 all-time in Game 2 of a series and have posted a 10-6 record in Game 2 when trailing a series.

"They are the Stanley Cup champions so we have to dictate the game," Ovechkin said following the Game 1 defeat. "From the first minute of the game, we have to make a statement. We have to make a push."

SATURDAY'S NHL STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS BETTING PREVIEW AND ODDS

The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continue Saturday as the Rangers and Capitals look to even up their respective series at one game apiece. We break down all the betting angles to help you handicap the day's puck action.

New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators (-105, 5)

Senators lead series 1-0

ABOUT THE RANGERS: New York needs to focus on a better start in Game 2 after Ottawa forced netminder Henrik Lundqvist to make 21 of his 43 saves in the first 20 minutes -- his highest save total ever for one period in the postseason. “Obviously we want to play fast, but we can’t rush it up with one guy trying to break through, give it away and have them come back and shove it up our (butt),” forward Mats Zuccarello told the New York Post. “It’s important for us to be patient with the puck against their trap." Leading goal scorer Chris Kreider remains stuck on one assist through seven playoff games.

ABOUT THE SENATORS: Karlsson missed five games down the stretch because of a pair of stress fractures in his heel, but he once again delivered with his first goal of this postseason to go along with his six assists, leaving Boucher grasping for superlatives. "I think our fans have to appreciate what we have here," Boucher marveled. "It's more than a star right now. That's what I think is unbelievable. He's a skilled player that became a star and now he's a winner." That also applies to goaltender Craig Anderson, who has won his last four against New York with a staggering .984 save percentage.

LINE HISTORY: The Senators opened Game 2 as very slight -109 homes favorites (must be the lack of fans), but they have since been moved to -105, making the Rangers now the -115 favorites. The total has been set at 5, but 4.5 can be found at a few shops. Check out the complete line history here.

INJURY REPORT:

Rangers - No injuries to report.

Senators - D M. Borowiecki (Out Saturday, lower body), LW T. Pyatt (Out Saturday).

TRENDS:

* Senators are 5-1 in their last six overall.
* Under is 4-0-1 in Rangers last five overall.
* Under is 2-0-2 in Senators last four overall.
* Home team is 5-1 in the last six meetings.

********************************

Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals (-145, 5.5)

Penguins lead series 1-0

ABOUT THE PENGUINS: Nick Bonino continues to be a thorn in the side of Washington, ending last year's second-round series with the overtime winner in Game 6 and scoring and setting up a goal during the regular season before converting on a breakaway with 7:24 remaining in the third period on Thursday. "'Bones' is a guy that's a high-stakes player," coach Mike Sullivan said of the 29-year-old Connecticut native. "He brings his best game when the games are most important, and we've got a lot of guys on our roster that we can say that about." Marc-Andre Fleury falls into that category after making 15 of his 33 saves in the third period Thursday to improve to 5-1 in the playoffs with an impressive .934 save percentage.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS: Alex Ovechkin used some colorful language to express his displeasure with the officials failing to call any penalties against Pittsburgh in Game 1, while fellow teammate and former Penguin defenseman Matt Niskanen offered the more politically correct take of "no comment." While several members of Washington were pointing the finger at the officials, Braden Holtby had his directed at himself - with Crosby's first goal 12 seconds into the middle session as a sticking point. "I thought I got there in plenty of time," the reigning Vezina Trophy winner told the Washington Post. "... I just didn't keep my glove in the right position. It's just you leave that one little space and it goes right there. It's one that I'm capable of stopping and will next time."

LINE HISTORY: The Capitals opened Game 2 as -129 favorites and bettors like them to even up the series, moving the line to Washington -145. Oddsmakers set the total at 5.5. Check out the complete line history here.

INJURY REPORT:

Penguins - D C. Ruhwedel (Questionable Saturday, upper body), G M. Murray (Questionable Saturday, lower body), LW C. Hagelin (Questionable Saturday, lower body), D K. Letang (Out for Season, neck).

Capitals - D K. Alzner (Questionable Saturday, upper body).

TRENDS:

* Capitals are 1-5 in their last six Conference Semifinals games.
* Under is 8-0-3 in Capitals last 11 vs. games Metropolitan Division opponents.
* Home team is 8-1 in the last nine meetings.
* Over is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings.
