Saturday's Lineup
60 Dime ---- MEMPHIS
20 Dime ---- OKLAHOMA
MEMPHIS --- Here it is boys... the absolute best play of the tourney to date. The Memphis Tigers will absolutely put the beatdown on the Terps and it won't be close after halftime.
As soon as I watched Memphis walk off the floor after an 81-70 win over Northridge, I absolutely knew they were going to be focused for whoever they faced next... whether it be Cal or Maryland. I'm actually glad it's the Terps because after their 13-point demolition of Cal Thursday night, so many people are going to jump all over them getting nine (or so) points. I'm actually in Vegas as we speak, and I can't count the number of people who have been placing money on Maryland. And why wouldn't they? Maryland plays in the perceived best conference in America and they're getting nine points from a team that plays in Conference USA and was fortunate to beat Cal State Northridge???
That's one of the many reasons I like Memphis today. When a play looks so obvious that you'd almost be stupid NOT to take it, nine times out of ten it works the exact opposite. Maryland looks like the obvious winner, but I'm telling you right now Memphis will win this game by double digits and they probably won't be tested after the break.
Maryland loves to press, and that plays right into the hands of the Tigers. Memphis has numerous ball-handlers and they actually beg teams to press them. Few teams in this tourney are as athletic as Memphis and the only reason Northridge was able to keep things close was the fact they hit an uncanny amount of shots. That won't happen today. Memphis has been one of the best defensive teams in the nation all season (in and out of conference) and they will show Maryland something they haven't seen before from a defensive standpoint. The Terps might have scored 84 points in their last game vs. defensive-lacking Cal, but against Memphis they'll be lucky to score their average of 71 PPG.
The Tigers, on the season, have allowed just 57 PPG and 36% FG shooting, and as sporadic as the Terps have been this season, there's no reason for me to think they will find their rhythm two games in a row. Think about this... the Tigers beat Northridge because Roburt Sallie hit 10 of 15 from three-point land while the rest of the team was just 1-13. I'm here to tell you right now that won't happen again. Think about how amazing that is... one guy, a bench player, was good enough to carry this team when NO ONE else wanted to play. Anderson, Dozier, Taggart... none of them came to play. Today, coach Calipari has challenged them to give their best effort and NOT take the Terps lightly, no matter what their record.
Memphis has covered 12 of their last 17 as a favorite and 14 of their last 19 overall, and after Thursday's embarrassing showing, you can bet they will come out with guns blazing. This one won't be fun to watch unless you're a Tigers fan. Memphis wins, 78-57, and covers with ease.
OKLAHOMA --- Can someone tell me why a team that was once ranked #1 in the country is giving just six or seven points to a team that was lucky to make the tournament?? Guys, I follow the Big 10. Michigan is not very good. Seriously, they aren't. Sure, they have a few talented players, but overall this team is just nowhere near as talented as Oklahoma. I watched Ohio State, yes the same OSU team that just got beat by Siena last night, dismantle this Michigan team twice in 2009. Oklahoma, meanwhile, took down one of the best the Big 10 has to offer earlier in the season when they beat Purdue.
The only way Michigan can stay close is if they get into a three-point shooting contest and they hit about 40% of them. Because if they think they can pound the ball inside against the Griffin brothers, they have another thing coming. Blake Griffin is the best college basketball player I've seen in quite some time and Michigan can double team him and still won't be able to stop him.
The Sooners have covered five of their last seven when giving less than seven points while Michigan has failed to cover seven of their last ten when listed as an underdog on a neutral floor. Sorry Wolverine fans, this game belongs to the Sooners today. Lay the points with OU.
