Utah -13.5 Sat Sep 12 '09 10:30p I was not sure what Utah was going to bring back from last season losing a lot of their skill position players. They looked very solid offensively in their first game putting up 519 yards of offense. San Jose State got their teeth kicked in by USC after their 3-0 lead in to the 2nd quarter losing 56-3. Now I know Utah is not USC by Utah has better skill players than San Jose State does. San Jose State only averaged 18 points a game last year with their defense keeping them in games. Now Utah should be able to do some damage against them through the air and on the ground and with San Jose St having problems in scoring I see Utah covering the spread and I donýt believe they will look ahead to Oregon next week because Utah always has been very solid ATS away from home. Utah is 8-3 in their lat 11 away games. They are also 25-10-1 in his last 36 non-conference games and are 4-0 when a road favorite of more than 10.5 their last 4 games. San Jose is on a 0-6 ATS run dating back to last season and 0-4 as an underdog. Even though the San Jose is 9-3 ATS their last 12 home games I see way to many advantages for Utah in this game and after their San Jose embarrassing loss and getting exploited on their defense I see Utah doing the same thing this week.

200♦ STANFORD CARDINAL - Not sure how much I'm geared toward playing on Stanford, or against the Demon Deacons. Most certainly, it's a little bit of both. I like this redshirt freshman quarterback for Stanford, Andrew Luck, who was eerily effective in his first college start, throwing for 193 yards and a touchdown last week at Washington State.

Now, first thing I might think is this his first game outside the Pacific Time Zone against a rugged ACC team; but Wake Forest's defense returns only one starter in its back seven, and I'm not so sure the rather soft defensive line can pressure Luck. With enough time on the majority of his drives, this kid will pick apart the Demon Deacons' inexperienced secondary. He has plenty of talent to turn to, as his skill-position players are all upperclassmen.

Honestly, the Cardinal could make it to its first bowl game since the 2001 season, and this is a game that would weigh heavy in certain bowl committee members' eyes. I'm grabbing the field goal or then some, and looking for the Cardinal to aim for the outright win.

200♦ EAST CAROLINA PIRATES - Revenge, I know. But you know what, East Carolina is going to do everything possible to not let the Mountaineers use that revenge factor from last season's 24-3 thumping that ended WVU's 14-game non-conference win streak.

ECU, the defending Conference USA champion, beat Appalachian State, 29-24, last week and has nine starters back on offense and eight on defense from that team that stymied West Virginia. And all due respect, while the Pirates eked out their win over Appy State - which is always a tough team in non-conference play - the Mountaineers let Liberty put 20 points on the board last week in a 33-20 win.

The Pirates are going to bring the heat against a newly built offensive line and pressure Jarrett Brown the entire game. And in case you were unaware, that loss to East Carolina a year ago, West Virginia allowed the Pirates to tackle them 11 times for a loss for minus-32 yards. I see a lot of that taking place all over again. Add in a bit of lookahead with a trip to Auburn on deck for the Mounties, and it's easy to see why I like the Pirates to pull off another upset.

200♦ UNDER Tcu/Virginia - Don't be surprised to see a 13-10 ball game here. Who wins? I don't know, and that don't mean to take th underdog. But the fact is Virginia is as defensively sound as the Horned Frogs. I was quite surprised by the point spread the oddsmakers made on this one.

So why not take the Cavaliers? Well, there's gotta be a reason TCU is laying the price it's laying, right? I'd much rather count on a defensive tussle, as the Cavs boast the best secondary during Al Groh's tenure at Virginia, and have an experienced and talented front line to apply the pressure. The only question mark, admittedly, will be the new faces at linebacker in this 3-4 front. But once this game gets physical, the linebacking crew will catch on quickly.

As for Texas Christian, we're talking about the reigning No. 1 stop unit in the nation. And while just about everyone else started last week, the aggressive Horned Frogs start their season tonight. The 16th-ranked Frogs should be able to take advantage of a Virginia offense that struggled against William & Mary's defense in its opener. Gary Patterson's infamous 4-2-5 defensive alignment uses three safeties, and shuts down spread offenses. It allows him to utilize speed in the secondary, and get this, he still has defensive end Jerry Hughes putting O-Lines on blast; the 6-foot-3, 255 pound senior led the nation in sacks last season with 15. Stay away from the side in this one, it comes down to defense.

4* #349 KENT over BOSTON COLLEGE

"There are going to be problems with any job. No one needs to feel sorry for us and what I inherited. What I inherited was a great job at a great job at a great university, with great people and great players. Now, do we have our work cut out for us? Yes. Do we have a plan? Yes. Is the future bright? Yes. There's a lot of positive things."

That was how new Boston College head coach Frank Spaziani made his entrance, taking over a program filled with issues throughout (three head coaches in three years can do that). Yet the Eagles opened with a 54-0 lambasting of Northeastern, and the marketplace is treating them as though all is well this week. It isn’t. Whipping an FCS team that lost 10 games LY does not mean a whole lot, and if anything it could actually be construed as a negative opener, in that some of the key issues were not able to be addressed. So we gladly take the value being offered here.

The Eagles have problems on both sides of the ball. There is not a QB that has ever taken a snap in a lined game, and by using Jason Tuggle (red-shirt freshman), David Shinskie (playing football again after six years as a pitcher in the Minors, and not around for spring practice), Cody Boek (played FB and on the special teams LY) and Mike Marscovetra (true freshman) all on Saturday none of them got a chance to get the kind of reps needed to run the offense well. Having split the snaps through fall practice as well, the chemistry of the passing game is an awkward mix.

Meanwhile that usually staunch defensive interior has to cope with the loss of 1st round (B. J. Raji) and 2nd round (Ron Brace) NFL draft picks, and injury and illness has taken away key LB’s Mark Herzlich and Mike McLaughin, with starter Will Thompson also missing Saturday, though he should return this week. Without Thompson they started two freshman and a sophomore at LB, and since Thompson is only a soph himself they are extremely untested. And while many times established programs can look to veterans to help steady the ship while young players develop, B. C. only has seven senior starters, and only two more on the second unit. This is a team that will be a work in progress, and there is absolutely no scoreboard urgency here, with a brutal cycle of six straight games against bowl opponents on deck, starting with a revenge affair at Clemson next week.

This is not all anti-Boston College, however. Kent State brings play-on potential in several areas, with a veteran OL leading the way for the cut-back runs of Eugene Jarvis, which can be especially effective against young LB’s; an emerging offensive weapon in freshman WR Tyshon Goode (six catches for 84 yards in his debut); and the defense has a chance to be vastly improved. Michigan transfer Cobrani Mixon quickly made his presence felt at MLB, earning M.A.C. defensive Player of the Week honors in his first game with the Golden Flashes, while Kevin Hogan (3rd in career sacks at Kent) adds a pass rush up front, and there are six members of the secondary with starting experience. They should never lose contact with a favorite that lacks the explosiveness, cohesion and any real intent to get this one by a big margin.

No problem here taking Kent State but at least get the game summary correct. Kent State starts 2 freshman and 2 sophomores on the offensive line. The QB is a sophomore and doesn't have a snap in a lined game either. They certainly can cover but I hate when guys make shit up that isn't remotely close to actuality
