In 1908, New York City passed a law making it illegal for a woman to smoke in public, Henry Ford started manufacturing a new automobile called the Model T, and the Chicago Cubs won the World Series.
I wish I’d been there.
Not that I smoke, or care if you do.
Not that I’ve ever paid much attention to cars, other than wanting mine to start on a cold winter morning.
I am a Cubs fan, however, and it certainly would have been the thrill of a lifetime to see them win a World Series.
Make that two lifetimes.
If the Cubs don’t win the Series this season — and they are listed at a middle-of-the-pack 40-to-1 to do so — it will be 104 years since Mordecai “Three Fingers” Brown pitched the Cubs past the Detroit Tigers in ’08.
After going 29-9 with a 1.47 earned run average during the season, Brown allowed one run and seven hits in two games against the Tigers.
At the time, who knew two World Wars would be fought, men would walk on the moon and human hearts would be taken from one chest and transplanted into another before the next Cub got a chance to pitch on baseball’s greatest stage?
Of course, that’s why I love this time of year.
Spring training has started, optimism abounds and every team — even Chicago — has a chance to win.
The season opener against the Washington Nationals is less than six weeks away.
Although I’m quite certain the Nats’ Stephen Strasburg will strike out 12 Cubs and scatter three hits, I’m looking forward to it, as always.
Why not?
After going 71-91 last season, Dale Sveum replaces Mike Quade as manager, if that matters.
Personally, I would have preferred the offseason signing of Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder.
But I’m willing to give Sveum a chance. Leave him alone until the Fourth of July, I say.
Let’s see what he can do.
Someday, Sveum might be managing Jorge Soler.
Last week, it was reported the Cubs are close to signing Soler, an outstanding outfield prospect from Cuba ... or Venezuela ... or the Dominican.
Maybe it was Joliet.
I don’t remember exactly, but I hope the kid signs and makes it to the big leagues in a hurry.
The Cubs need him.
As it stands, their rising star is shortstop Starlin Castro, who made headlines last season when TV cameras caught him day-dreaming during a 6-2 loss to the Cardinals.
An immense talent, Castro made Carlos Zambrano look focused.
Speaking of the Human Firecracker, Zambrano is no longer the ace of the staff.
The Cubs traded him to Miami after agreeing to pay most his salary for the coming season.
Now, when you swallow $15 million just to make a guy go away, it’s a fairly obvious admission that handing him the ball every fifth day for the past 11 seasons was a mistake.
Where is Three Fingers Brown when you need him?
