Where do they get their power when the wind isn't blowing?

Oops...still get it from the same old dirty place we all get it.

So in fact...this is less efficient.

They need to be hooked up to two grids...with a coal, nuke or gas power plants as a back up.

If this wasn't subsidized by the government...they couldn't afford it.

Sorry...but this no great triumph for energy production.:howdy:

e-126-wind_turbine.jpg

The world’s largest wind turbine is now the Enercon E-126. This turbine has a rotor diameter of 126 meters (413 feet). The E-126 is a more sophisticated version of the E-112, formerly the world’s largest wind turbine and rated at 6 megawatts. This new turbine is officially rated at 6 megawatts too, but will most likely produce 7+ megawatts (or 20 million kilowatt hours per year). That’s enough to power about 5,000 households of four in Europe. A quick US calculation would be 938 kwh per home per month, 12 months, that’s 11,256 kwh per year per house. That’s 1776 American homes on one wind turbine.

The turbine being installed in Emden, Germany by Enercon. They will be testing several types of storage systems in combination with the multi-megawatt wind turbines.

Hey, when the wind doesn't blow you can backup with solar panels. What are you gonna do when the oil wells run dry?

I can't believe the neocons here are putting this down. You should be in favor of something that helps keep money out of the terrorists funded Saudi Arabian pockets.

Wind power is something that's already well underway. We have wind turbines going up all over Texas and I'm starting to see some in the midwest. And South Dakota is the Saudi Arabia of Wind Power. Plus the U.S. has the best wind belt on the planet..Get used to it..This is going to be our next big source of energy..

Neocons are Americas fifth columnists.

Neocons have already wrecked the economy and pushed oil up to $140 a barrel.

Things like wind and solar and hydro would free Americans from being slaves to the middle east, which neocons will resist to their dying breath.

We have hundreds upon hundreds of those things here surrounding the city...bloomington, Illinois. Think they sell all generated electricity to Chicago, but the wind farms certainly are are sight to see.

Take a very quick pilot to do the crop dusting around those buggers.

I understand you really want wind to be a big source of energy...but you keep ignoring the fact that it just does not work that way.

I keep giving real world examples of that...but yet you still choose to ignore it. Rationalization is a funny thing.

The wind turbines you see going up everywhere are all subsidized...just like ethanol is. And they are both terrible options that will not work.

Wind power does not contribute significantly to generation system capacity. Every megawatt of wind generation requires almost a megawatt of traditional capacity on "spinning reserve" ready to go instantly when the wind fails.

It's becoming a little bit hilarious that people keep ignoring this fact.

Building more wind mills with government subsidy does not mean its working...or is the right thing to do.

Come on people...at least look at the facts. Jesus.

MJ, I don't think youre understanding this statement. It actually means wind power is more effecient. For areas where wind power is readily available it's a non issue. For the sparse moments they don't have enough wind, then it sucks. Sure. But 135% annual for that area, doesnt seem to be a problem.

MJ, you keep giving the same example and acting as though it was proof positive. Personally I think you have your own agenda.

135% for that area doesn't mean they get all their power from wind and then sell the rest.

All it means is they over built the wind system.

And they still need all the same power plants running 24/7 as backup.

The wind power hasn't reduced the need for conventional power at all.

I don't know why you guys can't see this. It's pretty simple.

If you think wind provides all their power 24/7/365 you are mistaken.

its definitely not as efficient as solar and a big upfront cost

Im not sure the exact ROI, but Solar is improving yet still not quite there and Wind is behind it.
