Willie not many nice hotels in Royal Oak.

I would not stay in any of them. Some decent on in Madison Heights right on the border of Royal Oak.

Might be the better way to go...I am not familiar with the Royal Oak motels as I lived 30 minutes from there and just drove to ROak and back to house.

The town is quite fun. Fishbones is the restaurant in Greektown, not bonefish. It is a cajun restaurant afd food is great.

Every time I go to Detroit (which usually is only to watch sports) I stay at the Mariott in the Renessance Centre. Very nice hotel with a great restaurant. I get the breakfast package which includes a full buffet breakfast (which is very good). Everything from the hotel is within walking distance (btw, don't waste any money using the people mover when you are there... biggest waste of money I have ever seen, it's completely useless). I was there on Thanksgiving to take in a Red Wings game and the Lions/Titans game.

It's probably completely booked for the time you want to go though, so don't know if it's available... but it's a place I recommend.

What town would be a great place to stay Final Four weekend? I'm looking for something within one hour of the game site.

Now I'm not assuming we're making the Final Four, but you literally can save thousands by booking now and then canceling if you don't make it. It's worth the insurance risk.

If we make the trip, I'll be looking for great restaurants, sports bars and strip clubs too. Maybe we can hook up for some good times.

Anyhow, just looking to make hotel reservations at this point, thanks.

i lived in detroit for 20 yrs...gtc is right, greektown is good....as far as hotels go, id probably just stay at one of the casinos....Ur not gonna find anything nice out of that 2 mile radius that surrounds the stadiums and casinos....detroits a dump once u get outta that radius, stick within it..cuz if ur not used to the ghetto, detroit is not a place u wanna be lol

sad but true

I would stay in Royal Oak or Birmingham both are about a 30 minutes away from detroit...I would not recommending staying at casinos in Detroit unless you planning being there most of the time gambling. Been here my whole life and the city is a dump and not much to do besides gambling ...

If you don't mind staying 30 or so mnutes out of downtown Detroit, check out Troy (eastside burbs) or anything north of 13 mile road on the westside burbs.

OK, best places to stay 30-60 minutes outside Detroit on Final Four weekend.

Birmingham, Madison Heights, Troy, Royal Oaks or north of the 13 mile road on the westside burbs.

Any nice hotels / hot spots?

I'm not a big fan of downriver. Most people look and act like displaced kentucky residents.

what are you looking to do willie? drink? gamble?

royal oak, troy, and most of the areas north of I-696 off of I-75 aren't too bad. royal oak is fun at times, troy and birmingham are nice as well. birmingham can get a bit pricey, but I'm a broke ass so to each their own. i was gonna tell you go to caesars but you already checked that. if you are looking to stay somewhere safe and real nice for restaurants and be able to get to detroit or windsor in 20 minutes for gambling try livonia, northville, novi area. the freeway that connects detroit to this area is rarely busy. I-94, I-696, and I-75 are congested a lot. I-96 west out of detroit is quick and easy.

You gotta get a little of Olga's Kitchen in Birmingham for lunch.

EXCELLENT Gyros and greek type food if you are into that.

Oh, and Detroit is famous for their coney island restaurants, Lafayette Coney Island probably being the most famous.

Greektown at night has some great restaurants as well and is in downtown Detroit, just blocks from Joe Louis Arena and Cobo Hall.

And stay away from downriver. I grew up in Southgate and the area is not what you are looking for...unless you are into Firebirds and Mullets.

I'm looking to do all of the things you listed, plus strip clubs. I like that not being too congested stuff, are Livonia & Northville active spots or sleepy burbs?

I'm gonna work on specific restaurants after we find a place to stay, but I like the way you think.

Ayuh...I might be off base here but I kinda figure that most of the destinations suggested by ROADREELER are ones that are at a level WILLIE has not stayed in since his broke-ass college days.

I'm pretty sure WILLIE wants a hotel where the room is cleaned at least twice a day rather than one where they just come in and hose down the walls and kick stuff under the bed between each check-in.

sleepy burbs... i would hit up birmingham/troy/royal oak area from what you've said...

that will give you some good night life, some really good restaurants and leave you close enough to 8 mile to hit up the strip clubs in the hood lol

Unfortunately, no booze served at NCAA Tournament games.
