I did four years of umpiring little league, Pony league, some high school and some Mens Amateur in Dallas before coming here

Main requirement is to decide right up front that every criticism other than from your colleagues is motivated by huge self-interest and therefore *Anything* you hear needs to be shrugged off.....and best when done with a no-words smile

Also helps if there is any kind of short (60-90 seconds?) pregame w both head coaches to patiently reset core ground rules on behavior. In baseball the main point we hammered was "I will respectfully listen to most any complaint you have but if you start any arguments about balls&strikes you are gone"

Solid advice.

My advice? Don't have rabbit ears, people are going to complain, that goes with the territory

Just focus on the game and avoid the noise (same advise I give when talking about life and politics) :)

Know the rules inside out.

Be firm in your calls.

Be respectful to coaches even when they aren’t to you.

Ignore the fans.

Hope you have a good partner as they can make it difficult if they are lazy and/or BAD!

I was a wrestling referee in Las Vegas from 1981-1984....confidence in your ability and knowing the rules are paramount....

Enjoy FZ!

Reflections after having reffed > 60 games so far:

- It's harder than it looks
- Many coaches don't know basic rules (ditto for loud, obnoxious fans)
- I've dropped 15 lbs because of all the running... in the best shape I've been in in years
- I'm enjoying it, and hope to do it for many years to come

I used to ref high school soccer back when I was in college. Pay was pretty awesome for someone who wasn’t even old enough to legally drink

A few basketball rules that everyone seems to get wrong... I've played all my life and coached, and some of them
I still had wrong:

- All parts of the backboard are in, including top, sides and bottom. The only thing that is out is the back. And, the ball can't go
over the top. Also out if it hits any of the support structure, including the shot clock.
- There is no such thing as "reaching in" or "over the top" There has to be contact for a foul.
- You can dribble as high as you want, and it's not a "carry" as long as you don't put your hand under the ball
- You can take a charge and still be moving as long as you have established legal guarding position. Though you can't move towards
the offensive player
- In high school and college, you can run and catch your own airball shot, as long as the ref deems it to be a legit shot attempt
- You cannot fake a free throw in order to get the defense to cross the lines (this has happened twice this year)

L5Y, USC is 4-0 vs SEC, outscoring them 167-48!!!

Great to see you enjoy this hobby. Interesting to learn. I remember this getting called all the time. Remember the "And 1 Mixtape" era and everyone trying to handle the ball like them?
