BOSTON -- Rain caused Major League Baseball to postpone Game 4 of the AL championship series Sunday night between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.
The tarp never came off the infield at Fenway Park, and the announcement was made 50 minutes before the game was scheduled to start at 8:18 p.m.
"The field is in difficult condition right now, there's been a lot of rain. This field doesn't absorb rain real well," said Sandy Alderson, executive vice president of baseball operations in the commissioner's office.
"We did check the forecast, we're going to have intermittent showers all night. ... Given the magnitude of this game and the importance of this series, we felt it was best to reschedule."
The game was pushed back until 8:18 p.m. Monday, when Game 5 originally had been scheduled at Fenway Park. The fifth game was rescheduled for 4:18 p.m. Tuesday.
"It's the right call. We walked the field. It's not playable," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said.
New York leads the best-of-seven series 2-1. If a sixth game is needed, it would be played Wednesday as scheduled at Yankee Stadium -- meaning there would not be an off day for travel.
