ST. PETERSBURG -- James Loney and Tim Beckham had back-to-back doubles in the eighth inning Saturday as the Tampa Bay Rays rallied for another win, this time a 4-2 victory against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.

Loney delivered a pinch-hit double that scored Evan Longoria with the tying run. Beckham followed with a double off the top of the left field wall to score David DeJesus and Loney with the final runs as the Rays won their fourth straight game in front of 19,772 at Tropicana Field.

Erasmo Ramirez started what was another bullpen day for the staff, and the staff responded.

Steve Geltz allowed a solo home run to Russell Martin in the seventh inning to give the Jays a 2-1 lead, but the Rays responded in the bottom of the eighth with four straight hits against the Jays bullpen.

Ernesto Frieri, who struck out the side in the eighth inning, picked up the win.

Ramirez allowed nine runs (eight earned) in 3 1/3 innings during his first start of the year on April 19 against the Jays in Toronto. Before that, he allowed seven runs in two innings of relief against the Marlins in Miami.

Ramirez did retire the New York Yankees in order April 19 when pitching the ninth inning. He threw only eight pitches, six for strikes, so that was encouraging, and the Rays, who are still without a fifth starter, opted for Ramirez to start Saturday over Matt Andriese.

When asked before the game what he hoped from Ramirez, Rays manager Kevin Cash said, “Go pitch. His last outing was one inning. Hopefully he built a little confidence. We all understand the first two didn’t go the way he maybe drew it up, but he’s with us and hopefully he can give us a little boost.”

Andriese pitched three innings of relief in Friday’s win. The reason he pitched and Ramirez is because Andriese has options and could be sent down if he his pitch count was high. It wasn’t. He threw only 35 pitches.

But Ramirez does not have options, so if he pitched Friday he would not be able to pitch for several days and the Rays could not move him off the roster unless they designated him for assignment, and they are not yet at that point.

The Rays purchased the contract of left-hander Everett Teaford on Saturday from Triple A Durham and added him to the big league roster as insurance in case of a short outing by Ramirez.

And, three batters into the game, it appeared that could be the case. Devon Travis lifted a double over the head of Steve Souza Jr., in right field and Josh Donaldson singled to left field to give the Jays a quick lead.

But Ramirez got out of that inning and pitched around a one-out in the second. Back-to-back singles to start the top of the third by Jose Reyes and Travis had Brandon Gomes warming in the bullpen. But Ramirez got out of the inning when he got Donaldson to hit into a double play and struck out Edwin Encarnacion.

He then sailed through the fourth inning by getting three quick groundballs to Logan Forsythe at first base.

The Rays had tied the score at 1 in the bottom of the first inning when Souza scored from first base on a double down the right field line by Longoria. The ball landed on the foul line and kicked toward the Rays bullpen. Longoria was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple.

It was, however, the first of four hits for Longoria, which matched his career high.

Morrison has enjoyed hitting in Minnesota's Target Field. He has homers in four straight games against the Twins and has hit .409 with five homers in seven career games at Target Field.
Morrison downplayed his impact, though, noting the team's struggles at times this year. Tampa Bay went to 26-25 with Friday's win and are 10-12 on the road.

The Rays continued their recent hot hitting and extended their winning streak to five with an 8-4 victory over the Orioles on Wednesday night.

Tampa Bay (9-13) now has scored at least eight runs in a fourth straight game, the first time in team history the Rays have done that. The Rays got five of those runs against former teammate Alex Cobb (0-3), four of which came in the fifth inning when Tampa Bay turned the game around and took a 5-3 lead.
