The bottom line is:

There are no federal laws in place making it illegal to place a bet.

State laws vary. For example, my state basically makes only two things illegal: being a bookie and placing bets on any election. That's it. Someone here posted a link that had every state's individual laws on it, maybe they'll come in in this thread and post it again.
