NES no offense but the reason in latin american nations kids who are privileged enough are taught another language

is because the upper middle class and upper class do business with the rest of the world.

In the US you can live a perfectly comfortable life knowing only english,

if you choose to learn another language then more power to you

However official document will be written in english, legal and binding. period

No hippie logic will change that

Exactly.

What kind of nationality is Europe?

Europe is a continent from what I know. People refer to them as Europeans.

So I guess Canadians, Mexicans, Nicaraguans, Costa Rican, Argentinians etc can also say ¨I´m American¨.

PS: Fuck NES.

Well, they should say either North or South American, right?

Oh ok, and fuck Central America then.

I´m just wondering who came up with the bright idea that US Citizens should be called Americans, as if they owned the whole place.

you guys are way off topic

but if the rest of the nations in the "Americas" are upset about the gringos calling themselves Americans

seems silly, and not important

Ive heard latins call them americanos too

its just semantics

Well, we live in the United States of America.

Central America is considered part of North America and therefore is not a continent.

Whew, it's a relief to know that when a foreign country shouts "Death to the Americans" that maybe they are referring to Canadians or South Americans.

Kind of off base there NES. I was referring to language only. Seems to me the ignorant ones are the people who move to another country and don't learn the language.

Well my point is that they pretty much wiped out the non-germans back in WW2 so it makes sense that there isnt much competition for dominant language in Germany these days, north america on other hand has probably had a spanish speaking population longer than it has had an english colonist but hey fuck it right those assholes need to learn.

Not sure about that since most other countries are not trying to screw over mighty extremists.

There is no need to preserve the English language, it's the most progressive and free language in the world today.

If I made up a word and enough people adopted the word into their vocabulary it will end up in the oxford dictionary in a year or two. D'oh has an entry.

But really what are we preserving? The English we speak today is vastly different than that of Shakespeare and what we call olde English wouldn't be understood by any of us here.

Language evolves you can't stop it...

Teddy Roosevelt had concerns about the large numbers of Germans coming to the US unable to speak the language, worried about the English language being taken over in the US...except for the Pennsylvania Dutch does is German running rampant through out the US?

Mexicans will come to the US only knowing Spanish, their kids will be Bilingual and their Grand Kids will be English only...
