He's run the organization for about 20 years and is the defacto GM. Take your pick, he was a lousy coach yesterday or he is responsible for the "shit roster" alluded to above. The Spurs are somewhere on the top ten list of things he cares about, but they are not #1 anymore. He is probably a top two coach in history if your history is about 10 years, otherwise, I'll just figure that idiotic comment was to gain attention.

Popovich is one of the best coaches in the league. You clearly don't know the NBA.

This Spurs team is not good and has a shit roster yet he took this very good Denver team to game 7? Even making the playoffs was a feat.

Way to go POP!

If a team is down 7 late in a regular season game it's game over? How much basketball do you watch? I've seen many many teams come back and win down 7 or more late. What league do you watch?

Idiotic thread.

Aldridge and DeRozan aren’t scrubs.

I dont like Pop's politics, but he is undoubtedly one of the greatest coaches ever. If Kawhi doesnt jump ship, they'd be contending for championships for years to come

Really?

I thought he coached a great game besides not calling timeout after the Murray horse shot floater and the end of game where they didn't foul, but they were like 5% to win after Craig blocks Derozan's shot anyway so that is kinda being blown out of proportion a bit, even tho it was a massive blunder.

That team won 3 playoff games, that was probably their top 5% outcome.

Aldridge is very good but DeRozan? Not so great. Never liked him or respected his game. Who else do they really have even if I do give you those 2? Spurs are not a very talented team and Pop did great with what they had.

Even the championships he won. Yes he had one of the greatest and one of my favorite players of all time Tim Duncan, but how many extremely talented teams don't end up winning it all? Pop still gets credit for winning those championships as do the players themselves of course.

I maintain what I said. This Spurs team with the talent or lack thereof had no business getting as far as they did against Denver or even making the playoffs.

Pop gets credit for this one.

Why are you discussing with these guys? They obviously don't like his politics and that is the reason they started the thread

That is something stupid I tend to do. Just assume everyone is talking sports when really they're just trying to say "Fuck this guy, fuck that motherfucker, fuck him"

Just pointing out that you can't separate Popovich from the roster so if you want to degrade the roster, which I think is reasonable, you can't let Pop off the hook for having responsibility. Meanwhile, always appreciate when the site mindreaders choose to share their enlightened perspective.

You said he had 10 things more important to do than running the Spurs, don't you think that is mindreading of your own? Do you know him personally? So of course it sounds like you just don't like him. C'mon.

Either way, I agree they have a deficient team and didn't get nearly enough for Leonard because of Pop's stubborness. Something I said on this board back when Leonard was traded. They should've been willing to deal him for young players/picks (possibly to the Lakers rather than worry about some stupid "rivalry" stuff) and take a step back rather than trying to keep competing just because Pop is old and doesn't wanna stomach a quasi-rebuild. Wouldn't have helped them this year but could've set them up for the future much better.

Other than that transaction, not a whole lot else you can do when guys get old and you don't have high picks to replace them though.

Off the top of my head:
1-Knowing his team has no shot at the championship, he cares more about coaching the Olympic team as a win there will cap his legacy and allow him to retire with a final victory. He can get on to that now.
2- He cares more about appearing to be "woke" which explains the ceremonial act of adding a woman bench coach to the team.
3-He cares more about maintaining his own media demeanor which allows him all of the benefits of being the league's #1 unsanctioned jerk. Even his post game description of the missed timeout...blaming the players, supports that narrative.
4-It is more important to him to use the platform, at every opportunity, to speak out against the current administration alienating a large segment of the SA and TX population
5-He cares more about wielding his own personal power in setting a line-up and holding out players (he was the first) rather than taking into account the image of the league or the disappointment of fans. He could achieve the same goal by limiting minutes, but this isn't enough of an FU to the league and fans.
6-Much like LeBron, he is more interested in setting up his post basketball life than, apparently, setting up his team to be able to navigate the last minute of a Game7
7-I'll assume he cares more about his family...that is three short of ten, but I can live with that although the handling of Tony Parker's and Leonard's departure indicates he also doesn't care very much about the Spurs post Popovich.

Pop is an arrogant, selfish prick. And an opportunist.

Tim Duncan fell into his lap. He saw the #1 pick coming and jumped at the opportunity to coach.

Guy was 76-129 as a college coach. That's all you need to know about him.

Tim Duncan made the Spurs. Not Pop.

You Popovich haters need to read this recent ESPN article with an open mind, and then rethink your position. The guys spends over a million dollars of his own money
each year to take the team out for team dinners, wining and dining them.

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/26524600/secret-team-dinners-built-spurs-dynasty

A sucker born every minute.

Is this like Oprah sending 100 people to Hawaii a year.

And you always have to ask if he writes it off as a business expense.... if so, they'd never put that in the article.

Zit, we're talking basic stuff. When you have these thug life players do promotional work where they stop by a hospital for a 15 minute photo shoot..... it's just all a scam. 99% of them are forced to do these photo opps to show what great human beings they are.... then the media and marketing team print and broadcast these images.

Popovich a scumbag 5000-1

Gullible suckers thinking he's a humble dude -110 .... sucker born every minute
