BB,I think at some point we do have to concern ourselves with what the world thinks. We are not living in a microcosm. Do we really want to stand alone and alienate the majority of the people in the world. I think there is enough animosity towards us already. A f*ck the rest of the world attitude will only add to that. And after all, eventually all empires come to an end.

Yes, there is a lot of animosity towards us Americans, but one can't stop there. These countries with anti-American sentiment hate everyone else too. Many Americans don't realize the culture differences and the nationalistic orientation that foreigners harbor. I lived in a foreign culture down in Costa rica for a good while. There is a lot of anti-Americanism down there, but I became less sensitive to it when I realized that they hate Colombians, Nicaraguans, Mexicans, Canadians, Spaniards, South Americans, Puertoricans, Dominicans, Cubans etc....even their neighbors.

People don't like Americans? I say "So what?" because they dislike everyone else too. Generally, envy is the highest form of human emotion these types of discriminatory people are capable of.

America, envy is one thing, resentment towards us because we try to impose our will globaly is different. I think,I repeat think, that is what is happening now.We are starting to see resentment towards us in parts of the world where it has never existed before.

I think the resentment has been there all along. All they've needed is a chance to express and vent out their resentment. They've used military actions taken by the U.S. to create a forum to express their hatred. Look at the anti-war demonstrations in CR for example. Those aren't anti-war, they are anti-American. I've seen them.

I think Judge has got it right in terms of analysis of the present situation. In the new EU member countries there is high enough standard of living to not be jealous of the US, at least not in terms of individual wealth, freedom, or security. We've got that stuff at a good level over here now.

The one area where some form of envy and/or awe can be felt is the area of power. Every country would like to be a truly sovereign state but we can't be because of that frickin' ever-powerful USA.

As for what the US should do in its own interest, I agree with American because we little countries are extremely adept at telling liberals what they want to hear to make them have mercy on us. Make no mistake it's just a charade to maximize the advantages we get. It's so easy to feed various sob stories and get relief, aid or favorable treatment from liberals it isn't funny. And we would be fools not to take advantage. If liberals were to permanently be in power, we'd just laugh as we watch America gradually implode on itself.

LMAO!!! That was eloquently put. It's refreshing to see someone come out and finally say it.

As far as the envy part, as you were quick to point out, that pretty much applies to third world countries, mainly our pretend-friends down in Latin America.

Royal guys like you kill me. You think the U.S. is the greatest country in the world to live in. You think people from Canada, Sweden, France, England, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Australia, Antigua, Bahamas, Monaco, St. Kitts give a rats ass about the U.S. or are jealous of the U.S. for a second. Give your head a shake. Who want's the violence, the guns, the crime, the pollution, the world hatred, the obesity, the crowdedness and just sheer ugliness of the average, uneducated, over weight, blind patriotic, pompous, flag waving, gun totting, arrogant, white trash, jerk. I'd much rather sit on a beach in one of these other countries sipping cocktails and having an educated conversation. The definition of disgusting is running into one of you on my holidays in one of these other countries. Talk about unpleasant.

benassflick,

I sincerely hope that you're a ghost of several aggressive posters around here. I have trouble believing anyone could be as dense as you project yourself. You call the average American fat, uneducated and a gun-toter among other names. First, if you ask the CDC they'll agree with you about the weight problem. Look closer at their criteria for saying that and you'll find that people like Arnold Schwarzenegger are morbidly obese. Right. :biglaugh: Second, I won't touch the uneducated remark because of my distaste for public education so we can agree on that since most people are educated in public schools. Third, I believe you'll find that less than half own any firearm let alone carry with them.

www.google.com

USE IT!

BTW, don't worry about encountering the average American while you're on vacation unless you actually come to the U.S. because it's mostly the uptight, arrogant Americans you reference that have the financial means to travel abroad extensively.

Why don't we just do whatever the "world" says?

They know what's best for us, right?

yeah youre right. if we have kerry, at least we'll be more in tune to the rest of the world there will probably be less terror and you wont have to wait 3 hours at an airport to take a 1 hour flight becuase your president is so paranoid. you can land, pay 30 cents less a gallon with your rent a car and if you get stuck there you can actually get work.

sounds good to me.

oh my gosh im so embarassed by my posts in this thread. well american yeah you are right its been good rooting for the sox the support for that team in this area is wild. cars with washable paint that read "i believe" or "go red sox" everyone i talk to asks if im watching the game and that theyll be watching it too and not just sports fans. so its pretty cool.

aditionally, i am lot easier about bush being re-elected than i was before i wont get into why, im still not pulling for him but im sure things will be ok. kerry wants to do a lot of things that congress wont exactly bend over backwards to do anyways.
