I was sorry to hear about this, was definitely looking forward to seeing if she could live up to the hype. Losing the horse to injury this early is the worst, before you really found out what she could do.

Secret Circle was also ruled out of the Derby today for Baffert, so tough day for him, but sounds like he might race again.

Just noticed your question about El Padrino and Union Rags Gyno, you may have read other places, I have a very strong opinion of El Padrino and I love all the negative press he received out of the Fla Derby. He raced 67 ft further than the winner and 25 ft further than Union Rags did in the same amount of time. He showed the highest MPH during the race on the trackus chart and tied with Union Rags for the lowest Thorograph figure in the race.

When you race 4 and 5 wide and your competitors save that much ground in comparison, you have a built-in excuse, despite so many people dismissing him for having "no excuse" in the race.

I think Union Rags is a very good horse, but will be better at 9F than he will at 10F. I vastly prefer El Padrinos breeding for the Triple Crown distances. Union Rags has a good burst of speed, probably better than EP in short use, but I don't think he will be able to extend it an extra furlong with the same effectiveness that El Padrino will.

I also think that El Padrinos best race was really the alw race back in Jan and it was such a large effort at a young age (111 beyer I think?) that it had a knockout effect for a bit. TCI was loose on an easy lead over a speedy sloppy track and he still reeled him in and blew right by, probably because he only had to race in the 2 path instead of the 5 path around the turns. He obviously backed up a bit in barely winning the Risen Star and then seemed to run a very similar race to that in the Fla Derby, but with 6 weeks off now and proper training, I am hoping he will be back to his best for Derby Day.

He will definitely need a better trip and not get hung out so wide against talented horses, but I do know that TCI is not going to get the easy early fractions he got in the Fla Derby with Bodemeister and Hansen in there and I am much less worried about the pace scenario. Whomever can get the best first jump on these guys between Gemologist, El Padrino, I'll Have Another, Creative Cause are who I'm currently leaning to, but still need to see a lot more data coming out of the last races to be sure. Of those 4, I'll probably get the best odds on El Padrino, unless he starts looking amazing and working out like a monster.

More to come on this topic Im sure.

Princess Arabella

Undefeated Princess Arabella , decisive winner of the Sunland Park Oaks, will not advance to the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) at Churchill Downs. The daughter of Any Given Saturday will instead be retired due to an inflamed tendon, according to trainer Bob Baffert.
Owned by John Fort’s Peachtree Stable, Princess Arabella has won three times in as many starts. She broke her maiden by 3 1/2 lengths at Santa Anita Park in December, followed by 3 1/2-length allowance win at the California track Feb. 12. The chestnut filly rolled to an impressive eight-length victory in the Sunland Park Oaks, which was her most recent start.
“She has a small, soft tissue injury that was going to need six to seven months off, and with a filly of that value, you don’t want to take the risk (of putting her back in training),” Baffert said during an interview on HRTV April 19. “It’s a shame because she was such a brilliant filly, and it’s a big blow to the Baffert barn because it’s a freaky thing when you get a horse like that.”
Fort was also quick to sing Princess Arabella’s praises.
“I’ve been horse racing for 35 years and I’ve never been around a horse that was so explosively brilliant as Princess Arabella,” said Fort, who also owns last year’s Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner Plum Pretty .
“When the word would get out at Santa Anita that (Princess Arabella) was going out for a gallop, 100 people would be standing around watching,” Fort said. “She just exploded around the track, and when she worked, it was like, ‘Oh my God, Martin (Garcia), don’t let her go too fast.’ She’s 16’2, she has speed from the gate, the finish, wherever you ask her for it. She’s just a big, gorgeous, rangy filly.
“It’s sad for me and the Thoroughbred industry that when we finally get it completely right, there’s this mystifying injury that rears its ugly head. I just hope she has a lot of beautiful babies.”
Bred by Greenwich Cattle Company, Princess Arabella is out of the Thunder Gulch mare Tortuga Lady. She retires with earnings of $188,400.
The filly is boarded at the Taylor family’s Taylor Made Stallions near Nicholasville, Ky. Fort said he has a season to Tapit and will breed Princess Arabella this year if possible.
