Big 10 teams are built to run and stop the run when the weather gets cold. All your techniques are different all year. And top QB's do not want to go there, they want to play in warm weather where they can pass all year and the receivers can catch the ball with their finger tips.
So come bowl time, the open offenses from the warm weather teams prevail in the warm weather and dome bowls.
I am happy for Penn State but they have no chance against USC. It will be a track meet not a slug fest. If plodding Wisconsin put up 31 on them in the dome, USC will put up 47-50.

They should have an 8 team playoff, yes I realize the wear and tear on the players and travel problems would be an issue. But it would legitimize the whole goddam thing. The bowl season is getting ridiculous.
And the non power 5 conferences should have a playoff, too, AA, MWC, CUSA, Sun, MAC... that would be interesting since they have NO shot at getting into the playoffs now and very little chance at getting into the prime bowl games.
This yr based on conference championships, W-L record, strength of schedule (with emphasis on non conference games), power ratings, last 5-6 game success, accounting for injuries, etc:
Bama
Clemson
Oklahoma
Penn St
Washington
USC
Ohio St

I know you can still make an argument for *Wisconsin, *Michigan, *Ok St, *Boise, *SD St, *Fla St... but IMO it would legitimize the whole thing and make the bowls meaningful and interesting.
And, who gives a shit about BC/MD, eliminate 1/3 of the bowls, too!
controversy and debate has been and always will be a debate in college football. It's part of the fun but I really don't want an 8 game playoff. 4 teams is perfect, it allows for debate and keeps the regular season as important. If there was an 8 game playoff there could have been 4 big ten teams in, which is awful. There will always be debate over who should get in and whatnot. There are 68 teams in the Cbb tournament and there is still debate about snubs, 4 is just fine.
The committee has actually gotten it right every year. The top 4 were the same as the BCS rankings would have had them. The only difference was between the 2 and 3 seed I believe last year and maybe this year.

Michigan didnt win the conference championship. PennSt did.
It's the utter hypocrisy of the NCAA (and ESPN and especially Kirk Herbstreit) to first say "you have to win your conf championship to be eligible" one year....then another year say "take the best 4 teams". and OhioSt still wasnt one of the top 4 teams but they got into the final 4 because
a) Urban
b) B1G
c) 1 loss
d) ESPN
e) the "win" over Michigan that the refs completely and totally gave them
and please get 8 teams into the playoff. There were easily 5 or 6 teams deserving of getting to the playoffs this year.

USC or Penn State might be the best right now, whoever wins the Rose Bowl has a good argument.
Or Oklahoma. They elected to play a strong non conference schedule and paid the price.
Or some others.
I agree Bama and Clemson are in the category of possibly the 2 best teams, especially undefeated Bama who played a top notch schedule.... but I wonder.
They need to go to 8 teams even though there are issues with player wear and tear and fan travel. This is too boring with good teams playing games they really do not want to play. There are so many other teams that coulda shoulda woulda been competitive (especially Oklahoma, USC, Michigan, Temple, then possibly Fla St, Ok St, maybe SD St, Colorado (well if their QB was healthy), Boise...
