The most important thing a hitter can do is get on base. Batting average is a useless stat when it comes to deciding the merits of a baseball player. In OB% Morgan by far is the better player than Sandburg.
Sandburg had better power numbers than Morgan, but he also didn't have Morgan's longevity. Ryno had maybe 10 solid years in the majors; hardly enough to be a first round hall of fame inductee. Maybe next year, though much of it depends on who is on the ballot in 2005. Blyleven should be in before Sandburg, but it doesn't look like that will happen.
