There is no way in tarnation the Pats are going to let Cassel slip away especially if there is the slightest possibility they may have to DL Brady again (then his pay is meaningless as it is not cap money). The only money that matters in Foxboro is money that falls under their salary cap so if they have to pay one of the two to just sit out the season on the physically unable to play list it has zero effect on the cap which means it's chump change to Bob Kraft..

In the event that they are both healthy then that puts the Pats in the drivers seat next summer when they will be able to get a pair of #1's for Cassel easily (ask the Vikings if they wouldn't have loved to have him yesterday).

The key player on every team in the NFL by a country mile is it's QB and having two all star quality signal callers on the same team is a situation every team in the league would love to have.

Let Eli, Donavon, Philip Rivers, Big Ben, Jake Delhomme, Kurt Warner and even Joe Flacco, or Kerry Collins break a leg in practice this week and watch their team's pointspread nosedive.

Taging Cassell as their franchise player was a no brainer. Cassell did a superb job as Brady’s replacement—better than expected—by throwing for 3,693 yards with 21 touchdown passes and only 11 interceptions. Of the five games the Patriots lost, at least four can be pinned primarily on the defense’s inability to make key stops at opportune times.

The Patriots allowed 38 points in a home loss to Miami, 30 in a loss at San Diego, 34 at home to the Jets and 33 against the Steelers. Though they allowed only 19.3 points per game, the Patriots had problems in the secondary from the start of the season. They never truly replaced cornerback Asante Samuel, and the problem got worse when others—specifically Rodney Harrison—suffered season-ending injuries.

This Pats team lost to Indy (squeaker), Pittsburgh (Rout) and San Diego (Rout) so missing the playoffs this year most likely saved them a first or second round loss anyway.

The other free agents in competition for the franchise tag are Rodney Harrison, Chris Hanson, Lonie Paxton, James Sanders, Mike Wright, Rosevelt Colvin, Deltha O’Neal, Larry Izzo, LaMont Jordan, H. Evans and Jabar Gaffney. Pierre Woods is restricted, and Mike Richardson and Ray Ventrone are exclusive-rights free agents. Harrison might retire when it’s all said and done, while Jordan might be apt to move on for a bigger role elsewhere with Mulrooney back and healthy among other running backs in competition for the job of his back up.

You tell me which one of the above is even close to being as valuable as Cassel, cap or no cap.

What % of their salary cap is now tied up in one position?

With a projected cap figure of $124M the Patriots will lose approximately $28M in cap money if both Brady and Cassel are kept on the roster for the entire 2009 season.

Cassel's new status as the team's Franchise Player gave him a hefty raise and even making him more expensive is his position. One in which he will get the average salary of the top five QBs in the NFL. Their total salaries divided by five or aproximately $14M and change.

Many will say a $28M hit against the cap for a single position (even if it is QB) is to much have to realize that at this point in time New England is basically taking out insurance against not having a healthy Tom Brady come next August. Then they can do a couple of things such as DL him for the season so that he cannot play but his guaranteed if injured money of $12M not count against the cap and let Cassel run the team again for a cap hit of $14M which is still a lot but workable.

On the other hand if both Brady and Cassel are good to go for the season opener the job is Brady's and Cassel goes on the market for immediate defensive help or draft picks down the road.

Not franchising Cassel now leaves him an unrestricted free agent and fair game for any team that wants to throw $15M at him. The Pats end up with nothing for Cassel.

I am sure there are other contract extensions and manipulations that can be worked out so that the outcome is different from what I have described but they are to complicated and varied to even consider in a post like this.

The only way Cassel sees playing time is if Brady is hurt. If Brady is good to go, Cassel gets moved the next day. There is 0 chance Cassel takes over as starter from a healthy Brady.

lets also look at it like this. Just because the team put the tag on Cassel doesn't mean he has to sign it. if it comes out that Brady will miss all or most of next year Cassel could simply not sign the franchise tender and then he would have the team by the balls. Then its either sign Cassel to a long term deal or play a season with Kevin o"connel as your starting QB.

Or Cassel could sign the tag immediatly on the first day possible. If I'm not mistaken that would lock in his 14 mil 1 year garunteed contract and than if a team wanted to trade for him they would have to pay him a 1 year 14 mil contract before signing him to a new contract plus give up the 2 first rounders. Part of the reason why teams would trade for him is because they could negotiate a long term deal and spread the money out over 6 or so years. There would be less teams willing to trade for him if they had to pay him a 1 year 14 mil deal first and give up the draft picks. Not to mention that if he is on the pats roster this year than guess what, next year he is a free agent again and there is nothing the team can do about it. Sure they can by NFL rules tag him again but then his contract goes to the average of the top 5 players plus 10%. Not the top 5 at his position, the top 5 overall. So if they tagged him again next year Cassel would have a 1 year deal for about 22+ million.

So like I said the only way this makes any sence at all is if the pats trade him for picks before the draft.

By the way if they wanted to go the other way and trade Brady I do believe that would be a 10 .5 mil hit against the pats for the '09 season.

They need to trade him and try to sign some defensive free agents like Nnamdi Asomugha
