Jap is a pejorative term like nigger, kike, spic, wetback, towel-head, etc. Let's say Bill said, "No disrepect to the Jews, but we ran some kike plays today". Same thing would happen.
What constitutes a slur is really a separate discussion, and the only argument on behalf of Parcells that could be made - that "jap" is not a slur. Most Japanese would disagree.
What makes a slur a slur is not some P.C. mythos, but the simple fact that people use it as such--to degrade or knock down others. You don't call some latino stranger a spic to his face upon first meeting him do you? Why not? You don't call some black guy nigger (well, maybe if you're black you do but that's another discussion for another time).

Gotta agree with skyweasel on this one... While I'm glad its not getting blown out of proportion (because really, it isn't), to say there is nothing wrong with the comment is just being ignorant.

Political Correctness should be outlawed, It is un-American. I don't use racial slurs myself - I honestly didn't know that saying Jap was a racial slur.
The Japanese people ( is this right ) bombed us 64 years ago. We don't owe them or anybody a damned thing. Our society has become the "feelings" police, this makes me sick. Our country is based on saying whatever the hell we want (except fire in a theatre). The people of the Empire of Japan ( is this better ) are probably more pissed for being called "oriental" than "jap" ( should we capitalize jap when referring to it's use). I wonder what Dat Nguyen has to say about it, oh that's right he's Vietnamese, oh crap I mean a Vietnamese -American (is this right)
