I have a friend in the biz and he told me their mark up is less than 1% on most "off the shelf" goods.

I was in the business for years and there is no way the mark up was 1 %... they try to claim there profit is 1% but that is not the case either... If i could have made 15 dollars an hour being a cashier i woild have given up managing. our cashiers made minimum wage or a little better.

Wal-Marts extort the suppliers by forcing them to give them the lowest wholesale prices. Runs the smaller chains out of business. Stores also make money by suppliers paying for space and promotions.

The labor end of it-cashiers and stockers start out a little over minimum. Ones making $15/hour have been there a long time. Major dept managers make $35,000-40,000+. Store managers $50,000+

Walmart supercenters are taking over the world. There is a grocery store a few miles from me and it is the only grocery store in a small town - and it has changed owners I would say 5 times in the last 10 years. Nobody goes there because you can drive 10 miles and buy the same stuff for cheaper at wal mart.

BTW I've never seen a cashier making $15/hour. $8/hour around here if you're lucky.

It's not just grocery stores--it's all kinds of businesses. There's a damn good reason why community after community fights until their death to prevent WalMarts from opening up there. The only people supporting them are the politicians seeing all that tax revenue they could get.

WalMart ruins small business-plain and simple.

I support Walmart in town because I don't feel like giving out handouts in the form of above market wages. The money I save I give to other businesses in town. It functions just like an unstated tax increase, you pay more for groceries and then the money gets redistributed to the few who work for the store. Just calling it like I see it. Those small businesses are inefficiencies to the marketplace. I know it sounds rude to put people out of work, but that is the market economy for you. Can't be a low cost producer or provide superior service, you get kicked out forcibly from the marketplace.

Union cashiers with 2 years experience make over $15/hour in Vegas and a little more in CA, at least that is what they said during the contract battles they went through. Then again $15/hour isn't much in this town, especially when you can only work 32 hours. Walmart cashiers with similar experience are said to make around $10/hour with lesser benefits.

man around here, I wuld guess cashiers make $7/$8 per hour....

I hate shopping at Walmart, but can get just about everything cheaper than anywhere else, so why pay more? I mean sometimes I buy more expensive stuff, but when it is the same exact product, say Cherrios or Toothpaste or whatever, cannot beat Walmart prices. Now if you tell me you are willing to pay extra not to deal with Walmart employees/customers, i can understand that as well.

whoever owns the grocery store make 1.00 on every 100.00 worth of sales after all employees are paid, rent for the building, all expenses etc.
