One stat I always keep in mind when thinking/betting on teams to win the championship is that all 17 champions in the BCS and CFP era had at least one top 10 recruiting class (per rivals) on their roster. This quickly cuts the field down from 128 to 18 of teams that could win the championship. Some year someone might break through but right now that stat is 17 for 17. I'm not going against it. Top 10 classes over the last four years:

4 top 10 classes: Alabama, Auburn, Ohio St, Florida St

3 top 10 classes: USC, Florida, LSU

2 top 10 classes: Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Michigan

1 top 10 class: Clemson, Texas, Stanford, Miami, Notre Dame, UCLA, Ole Miss
Good stuff. And another one I like. With the exception of Oklahoma in 2000, every team who has won the NC in the BCS era and last year have had at least 2 top 10 recruiting classes in their last 4 recruiting cycles. No more of those BYU's with a cream puff schedule sneaking in and stealing a national championship

7 of the 11 schools with multiple top 10 classes L4 years are SEC and Bama plays 6 of them this year in the regular season. no fun

anyway, typing out loud...

i wonder what the lowest rated class in previous 3 recruiting seasons was to win a title. Tt wasn't Bama since Shula put together #11 class in 2006 and they went on to go unbeaten in 2009 regular season....

certainly isn't FSU as they have been inside rivals' top 10 every year since '07. Florida was top 15 every year from 2003 through both their titles.

could be the barn who were only 20th in 2008 narrowly ahead (or behind, whichever way you look at it) of Texas who were 18 in 2004.

only one i can find outside top 20 was LSU with #22 class in 2005 then winning 2008 title (2007 regular season) but they followed that class up with #7/#4 and preceded it with #2 so had 3 top 7 classes making up the majority of the team.

anyway you shake it out....better post some top 10 classes if you want to win a title (note to Ducks, Bears, Spartans, and Frogs fans....)
