1. started with $5
2. sold it for $7 so he now has $7
3. he invested $2 more to buy it back at $9 so he has now invested $7
4. he sold it at $12 so he has made $5 after pocketing his original investment.

No more thinking!!!:bong:

if i wasn't told this was commonly answered incorrectly, i probably would've gone with 5 just like the rest of the crew. knowing this was a teaser, i reworked the problem as such :

+2 off the first sale
rebuying at $9 erases the +2 profit and sets our boy back a cool $2 dollars. ok, so he's at -$2 prior to the 2nd sale. selling at a +3 profit on his second shot results in the following...

-2 + 3 = +1 profit

That's my answer and I like the fact that no one else has gone with it yet

Profit from earlier sale is not lost when you buy back, it is undertermined until it is sold. If you bought a duck instead of a chicken on the second transaction, it makes no difference, you made $2 already, then $3 more on the duck.

2+3=5

3 must be the wrong answer people come up with most.

purchase of chicken -5
sold for 7, makes 2, investment -3
buys back -9
-9 and -3 = -12

The answer has to be 1$.
If he bought for 5$ and sold for 7$. you have a extra 2$ in your pocket.
The next transaction you buy for 9$, it cost you that 2$ profit plus an additional 2$. You then sell for 12$, after you pay yourself back the 2$ you lost on the 2nd buyback, you have 1$ profit.
