Matsuyama has just not yet shown he can step up, handle the Big Moment.

Until he does + pitted against JDay in a Round 4 to take home the Crystal ? = Play On JDay.

Matsu needs to step up, at some point he will. It could be today but I don't fucking think so.

Yesterday's Round was the most brutal taxing tiring 6 hour round nightmare players have seen.

Literally
.

Fatigue will be a factor, mental power will decide this matchup.

Cons: JDay enters with 4 shot lead on Matsuyama. Where is JDay at with his Vertigo health concerns of the past...after the very physically depleting Round 3?

Pros: JDay don't play "not to lose". Paired with Matsu he should beat this 24 year old who has not shown the ability to deal with the heat of the Big Stage by......at least 2 shots on the day.

JDay did say in interview this AM that he was sufficiently rested. Did adequately relax.

Matsuyama said something in Japanese that no one understood. It sounded like he was ordering Chinese Food actually.

its a wee bit early for Aisan Fare.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Hideki Matsuyama switched putters Saturday, and it helped him shoot one of the best scores on a firm TPC Sawgrass layout that frustrated most of the world’s best players.

His 5-under 67 came on a day when only six players broke par and the field averaged 75.9 strokes. He vaulted 34 spots on the leaderboard into second place, and will play in Sunday’s final group alongside Jason Day. Matsuyama, who is tied for second with Ken Duke and Alex Cejka, trails his Presidents Cup teammate by four shots.

THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP: Leaderboard | Tee times | Daily Wrap-up | Knox makes 9 on No. 17 | How did No. 17 play?

Matsuyama said it isn’t unusual for him to switch putters in the middle of a tournament. It worked this week. He arrived at TPC Sawgrass ranked 147th in strokes gained: putting (-0.15 strokes per round). He’s second in that statistic this week (2.36).

He used a brand-new putter in THE PLAYERS’ first two rounds, a center-shafted model with an oversized grip. He returned to his usual putter, which has a cavity-back, perimeter-weighted head, after the new one helped him regain his confidence on the greens.

He started Saturday round 10 strokes behind Day, but hit 16 of 18 greens Saturday and needed just 29 putts. He made three consecutive birdies on Nos. 1-3 and 10-12.

“It was crazy tough,” Matsuyama said of Saturday’s conditions. “The greens were really tough and fast, but I was hitting the ball well. I hit a lot of greens today and gave myself some birdie chances that I was able to convert.”
Hideki Matsuyama interview after Round 3 of THE PLAYERS

Putting is the key for the 24-year-old from Japan, who is one of the TOUR’s top ball-strikers; he ranks fifth in strokes gained: tee-to-green (1.84).

He doesn’t have a swing coach, but learned from the game from his father, a former club champion. Matsuyama’s swing, identifiable by its pause at the top of the backswing, helps him play well when conditions are tough. He has made the cut in 11 of 12 major starts as a professional, including four top-10s. He finished in the top 25 in his previous two trips to TPC Sawgrass’ THE PLAYERS Stadium Course.

When asked what he liked about the Pete Dye design, Matsuyama replied, “I guess watching everybody else struggle is comforting.”

He earned his second TOUR victory earlier this season at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, where he beat Rickie Fowler in a playoff. He has finished in the top 25 in eight of 12 starts this season and ranks ninth in the FedExCup. He qualified for the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola in his first two PGA TOUR seasons.

Matsuyama finished 11th at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship, his first start since he finished in the top 10 at Augusta National for a second consecutive year. He returned to Japan after the Masters, and was in the country when the Kumamoto earthquakes struck the country on April 16.

Matsuyama did not feel the tremors, but was alerted to the disaster by his cell phone. He is wearing two buttons on his hat to show support for his home country.

“As I watched the news on TV, and saw the devastation that took place, I thought I needed to do something,” Matsuyama said through his translator, Bob Turner. “(The buttons) are something as a Japanese citizen to show my support. Hopefully … if the folks back in Japan see the buttons and know that we’re thinking of them and care about them, hopefully it will make a difference.”

The flag of THE PLAYERS champion is raised at TPC Sawgrass after the tournament, and Matsuyama hopes that a victory could encourage those impacted by the earthquakes.

“If I were to win, hopefully that would bring them some joy,” Matsuyama said. “And seeing them happy after the struggles that they have gone through, it would make me very happy also.”

That Mental Exhaustion from Yesterday's Round, extreme mental fatigue, beginning to rear it's ugly head for JDay...

..he just CHUNKED 3 shots in a row from the rough at 9....got underneath 3 in a row...went all of about 4.5 yards with 3 shots.

Sawgrass Officials made the course absurdly difficult, way too difficult yesterday.

This Back 9, JDay may say post tourney interview, was among the hardest Grind he has faced within his career.

TB/Pit Over 1.5 2nd P -135

This is a great spot for this to hit. I'd guess my record on 1.5 2nd P overs is around 85%. BOL
