Well the bats have had tough row to hoe in first eight games...facing Rays and then At Angels, At Oakland

If we can presume that OAK and ANA both are above .500 teams they fit into the Boston's most challenging role - that of playing Away vs teams that finish above .500. Past three seasons Boston right at about .350 win pct in that spot

12th inning loss to Oakland on a 2 out infield chopper. What a lousy way to lose. It's going to be a LONG season.

A lot sure hinges on about a half dozen players

Pedroia, Youk, Lowell have to certainly maintain their above average pace because I think Papi is fading (relative to his 2004-7 run), Bay will revert a bit back down to a .260 style hitter and Varitek is rarely a postive offensive impact

Beckett....Will he continue what has been a career of non-dominance on the road?

DiceK - already noted in previous post...will he even last the season in rotation?

Lester - A tremendous story last season...But he's still pretty raw

Penny - Will he be their annual attempt to revive a fading/broken arm (Colon, Schilling, Clement, Wells) or can he actually make 30+ reliable starts?

Wakefield will likely be the same as always, meaning he'll reliably soak up 200 IP, win 14 games, but be at best your fourth option in any postseason action

Boy oh boy....if DiceK were to just fade....how much will the Sox have paid to get just 2+ seasons out of him - almost $100million?

YOUUUUKKKK @):)

Red Sox destroy skankies hopes and dreams in game 1. Bay takes decrepid old-man Riviera deep, Papelbon destroys texiera, YOUK goes deep. Red Sox win.

As it should be.

Hard to see the skanks finishing ahead of Toronto and that means 4th place for them. :pointer:

Shitacular pitching on both sides today. Yanks better shore up that 7.71 ERA bullpen or it's gonna be a long season.

The key to any good season is beating up on the shit teams.

The Sox did that by sweeping NY and Balt.

That link is dead Wil.

That was pretty cool to watch. It is amazing that it happened against two veteran guys too.

I fixed the link.

Tonight's hero was Jason Bay who tagged a 99 MPH Kerry Wood fastball down the middle for a three run homer over 400 ft to center in the top of the 9th of a scoreless game in Cleveland, Sox won their 11th straight 3-1.

Cleveland's Cliff Lee pitched a great game going 8 full shutout innings yielding just 5 hits. Tim Wakefield went seven full allowing only a one hit (a single to Victor Martinez in the 1st inning).

Jonathon Papelbon was shaky in relief giving up a run on three singles but still got his 5th save of the young season. Wood took the loss while Manny Delcarmen got the win for pitching a perfect 8th inning.

Is Wakefield the best free agent aquisition ever?

Red Sox claim him off waivers from Pittsburgh in 1995

Its 2009, he has a 1.86 ERA in 29 innings pitched this year

166 wins for Red Sox, 22 saves

Good News: Beantown Boys in sole possession of the American League East
lead.

Bad News: Ortiz continues to suck, as he stranded 8 runners, going 0-5.

BOSTON -- Kevin Youkilis hit a three-run homer two innings after his long foul ball was upheld by a replay review, Mike Lowell also had a three-run shot and the Boston Red Sox avoided being swept at home for the first time this season by beating the New York Mets 12-5 on Sunday.
J.D. Drew went 4 for 5 and Nick Green had a tiebreaking two-run single as the Red Sox rebounded from a rough loss Saturday night when Omir Santos' replay-reversed homer against closer Jonathan Papelbon gave the Mets a 3-2 win.Boston rallied with three runs to take a 6-5 edge against starter Tim Redding (0-1) in the fifth. George Kottaras' RBI double chased Redding before Green singled home two runs on the first pitch from reliever Sean Green.Jason Bay had an RBI single before Drew added a run-scoring double in the sixth. Youkilis homered against Brian Stokes, capping a four-run seventh. The video-replay system at Fenway Park got used for the second straight day, and umpires upheld their call that Youkilis' drive toward the left-field pole was foul.On Saturday night, Santos' long fly that hit off a table in the first row of the Green Monster seats and bounced back onto the field -- initially ruled a double -- ended up being called a homer when the umpires used the first replay review in the park's history.Tim Wakefield (6-2), the club's most consistent starter so far this season, gave up five runs and seven hits in six innings for his fourth win in five starts. It was the seventh time in nine starts that he's pitched at least six innings.

Big win while the rest of the AL East lost.

Unfortunately Big Papi is still pretty much an automatic out in the 3 hole as team DH. How long can Terry Francona go with him???

Jason Varitek on the other hand has been killing left-handed pitching this season with a .308 batting average and a 1.262 OPS entering this weekend, his 8 homers are a real bonus coming from the defensive minded team captain and veteran catcher.

John Smoltz will make his next minor league rehab start for the Double-A Portland (Maine) Sea Dogs when they visit the Manchester (N.H.) Fisher Cats next Tuesday. The 42-year-old was hitting between 90-92-mph in his first start in Single-A last Thursday night. Smoltz is a wild card for the second half of the season, if he pitches like he has in the past he could really give the Sox staff a boost as the 5 starter and allow Justin Masterson to join an already deep bullpen.

The big question is still, all things considered, will Boston go out and pick up a reliable DH with some pop in his bat. Money is no object as The Sox sold out Fenway for the entire season last week.

Yankees coming on strong, Jays starting to fade, Rays lurking.

Red Sox have now beaten the Yankees 7 in a row.

They are on a streak of 42 innings without even trailing.
