Somebody who runs a Lakers blog made some great points about why this trade would be detrimental for them. I can't find the entry and don't remember all his points, but I do remember these:
- Odom is a great rebounder; Artest is not. Odom's rate of grabbing available rebounds is outrageously high
- Artest goes through long stretches of games where he completely abandons the offense and instead just starts posting up or taking shots from deep for no reason.
Personally, I agree with the guy. Also, Odom is a better finisher around the basket and gets easier baskets than Artest does. He also doesn't need the ball in his hands too much in order to get his points, unlike Artest. In addition, Odom is an adequate defender and doesn't get enough credit for his versatility on that end.
I will say that the Lakers are better off with Artest's lockdown ability on that end than Odom's versatility IF Bynum continues to progress and is a real presence on the defensive end.
