Lennon-McCartney and is not even close. I know some people don't like the Beatles but you just can't overlook all that amazing material not to mention they merged Pop with Rock N Roll in a way it was never done before changing what music was forever.

Honorable mentions based on chemistry and personal preference:

Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Jim Morrison & Ray Manzarek, Freddie Mercury & Brian May, Roger Waters & David Gilmour, Bon Scott & Angus Young, Ozzy Osbourne & Randy Rhoads, Mick Jagger & Keith Richards, Eric Clapton & Jack Bruce.

Given I only consider bands from 50's through 80's to be "pure rock n roll" (with very few exceptions) I left out everything more driven into the punk rock/alternative rock genres.
