Not everyone needs a car...

Astute point.

And while auto manufacturers deal with a fairly hefty list of requirements and regulations in order to do business, I'm pretty sure they're not enjoying many of the levels of exclusivity enjoyed by America's health care insurance sellers. That level of exclusivity is what bars many rational and reasonable forms of competition. See the John Mackey essay I posted (WholeFoods Alternative) wherein he promotes the important message that Americans should have a wider access to health insurance products.

Fords sales are up and they're making a profit because they adapted sooner, the other companies didn't

my 80 year old father in law actually decides to buy a new car and take advantage of this program, with a little prodding from "the family".

Surely his 1992 Olds 88 is a clunker, he's going to get $ 4,500 for it. I thought it qualified, he knows it gets far less than 18 mpg and the dealership thought so as well.

They come to a deal and begin the paperwork, and to everyone's surprise, the POS vehicle is rated as getting 19 mpg, no Obama money fo you. Do you think they check voter registrations during the process :think2:

The dealership then offers him $ 100 for trade. Needless to say, he's still driving his 1992 Olds 88.

The silver lining? more money for me down the road.

There's always a silver lining y'know.

Cash for clunkers is just another failed attempt to prop up GM and Chrysler. Nothing more, nothing less.

Tell him to run the Olds dry, then have it towed to the dealership.

Fill a one gallon gas can, pour it into the tank of the Olds.

Tell the sales manager of the dealership that if he can drive it to a destination (through city traffic) 19 full miles away, your pop will trade it for the $100 (plus $100 to cover the tow and gallon of fuel)

If not, then the dealer will give him the $4500, plus $200 more for the above expenses.

Sounds a bit winding, but what the hell else does an 80 year old Republican have to do with his days? Could make for a good article in local newspaper.
