Not confusing at all Savage. I totally get it actually.
Dude, I've been following these guys since the mid 80s. In fact, I actually was a paid customer for their season package for 3 years back then. Extremely expensive. Of course no internet, just newspapers and Power Sweep by snail mail back then. lol
I guess I was fortunate in that the few years I was with them, they actually did quite well - especially in the colleges. One of those years he was actually the #1 service according to the Sports Monitor. Of course back then, Phil Steele was intimately involved and ran the show. He did all the comp lines, the 900 lines, and most of the writing - totally different than the hack outfit it's turned into the past several years, or decades.
So I have always enjoyed your rants over the years. I was reading you over at CM since forever. I get your point about probably making Iowa today just a big Marquee selection. BUT, I stand by the point regarding how incredibly rare it is - a 4 star Power Sweep selection not being at least a 3* LP play.
By the way, you might find it interesting as to why I stopped being a customer despite having 3 straight big winning seasons. My last year, in order to get me to renew, he gave me a 60% guarantee. He said "I must hit at least 60% against your line in the colleges, or I will give you the following season for free." Well alright!! I'm in!!
I kept detailed records, and against my line, he hit 58.9% won/loss, and 59.3% on a star basis. Indeed a great year - but under 60%, at least vs my line. Of course, there were a few games close to the line either way, and he disputed my records and ultimately did not honor the guarantee - in fact, denied he offered it in the first place! Wow. Of course, I walked away pretty disgusted actually. Unfortunately, it was just a verbal guarantee, nothing in writing. I'm thinking it was 1988 or 1989 - somewhere around then. Might've been a bit earlier.
Great story, bristolnole, and especially from someone who has followed them as long as I have!!
I agree with you wholeheartedly that way back when Steele was the go to guy way back when before internet, gambling sites, etc.
Asas you know there were also folks who claimed to be the best service out there like Mike Warren, the Professor, Feist, etc and of
course the ultimate scammer Stu Feiner.
While I never purchased a subscription to any of the NC services, I did purchase PowerSweep for a season or two and
on occasion did call their 900 number for a big play when there was no other way to get it.
I am sure your point on Iowa is valid as you probably have more overall experience with PowerSweep than I do!!
Your story about being cheated if not hitting 60% is not surprising although personally I can't remember any instances of Steele
offering an entire season for free if not hitting 60%.
By the way, was the 60% deal for PowerSweep or for Executive Service??
If it was just for PowerSweep, I can ALMOST believe he would make an offer like that and honor it, but if it was for the more costly Late
Phones/Executive Services, imo it was entirely out of character because Steele is cheap, and the various "discounts" he offers
are bogus because they are always based off vastly inflated MSRP services to begin with!!
Best of luck, please continue to contribute and Happy New Year!!
ps I won't comment on CM other than to say that when I look back at it, DICTATOR Wayne probably did me a big favor by permanently
banning me and releasing me from his bondage!!
It is always great to hear from folks like you and Alcatraz who know the entire story with Steele/NC!!
