I am either an Internet Investor or a Day Trader...Works even better when in suit and tie. If they start asking questions I change the subject. If I want people to know my business, they must have a need to know...Best wishes...OF

I can relate to and agree with what scpnc and FISHHEAD stated about the consequences of telling....

....there really is no up side to making public knowledge of one's gambling behaviors, regardless how controlled you feel your behavior is....the only people who will judge you accurately or accept your conduct are the people who are in the same boat as you are....

About the time someone you know yells across a crowded bar to ask you what the line is on Alabama this week is about the time that too many people know your habit.

The only real intelligent conversation you might have about gambling is in the forums, with like minded people....or if you personally know a friend who likes to talk shop and not involve it in conversation in a public place...

Theres nothing like going 3-1 and taking a bunch of shit from someone about the lone loser when they know full well there was 3 winners also...of course they like to bring this up in a crowded place.....then next week they have the gall to ask who I'm betting on...maybe I already know but I tell them I don't.....fvck'em why should I help them out when all they're gonna do is look for losers to rub in my face?? How many of your "friends" give you a thumbs up for a winner?

Frankie5angels...When you asked Horseshoe why the police and feds would care if you are just gambling..........

It is the police and feds job to get nosy about peoples activities, regardless to the position if whether or not your actions are causing harm to someone else's property or person...I have heard true stories of old men playing cards in bars and thier game got busted up by the cops for simply playing for 5 and 10 cent stakes.

There is no up side about claiming to be a gambler....people will look at you as some type of degenerate, and as FISHHEAD stated, the same applies to women.....how many here think if they could actually pick enough winners to gamble as a profession that thier neighbors wouldn't consider them to be some sort of drug dealer because you don't go to work and don't follow a routine the average Joe follows?

Marco - truer words have never been spoken. I email the plays from my website to a relatively small group of mostly co-workers. Usually, all I hear about was the one or two losers and of course they always conveniently forget to mention the 5 or 6 winners I gave em before that loss and that's only the few that actually pay any dammed attention to the plays to begin with. The plays on my website are hitting at a 54% clip for the whole year and my baseball plays have been consistently winning over the last 2 months but all I get is the usual bullshit about being an illegal bookie and the other stupid comments that non sports bettors have no concept of. It's a no win situation that very few people outside of our business understand or can relate to in any way. As long as I maintain the psychological pride of knowing that I am engaged in a noble effort, that's really all that matters in the long run.

Well women have cost me too much money....

When people ask me what I do for a living i usually tell them "it has something to do with math and numbers". That will keep them off my back since most of them don't know or don't care about math...

I found this amusing. Last week I walked into a local strip joint to have a beer around dinner time. I'm standing at the bar enjoying my drink and this stripper sits down beside me. We get into the "usual" talk at these places and she ask me "why am I not sitting down" and I reply "I've been sitting down the entire day". I Knew what was coming next. "So what do you $$$ do for a living" she's thinking banker, office...maybe lawyer . I reply " I'm a gas bar attendant....self serve by the way"

. I've never seen someone get up so fast, but it was all good.

Most I know have "Investor" listed on most documents or paperwork requiring such info.

Frankie, as you know, many locales have different legal interpretations or "interest levels" pertaining to gambling or making book, some try to turn blind eyes, some don't.

Gaming has definitely come a long way in tolerance and acceptability with most Americans the past twenty years, but still some bettors are on occasion pursued if in loose-affiliation or contact with those of the pen-to-pad art form, and can be labeled as a "bookmaker's bookmaker" just due to their bet size, or called "organized crime" just for just being in the know via contacts that may write..or interstate commerce..or taxes..whatever may stick?

As if $9 Halliburton hamburgers for the troops aren't costing America's taxpayers more than wasted gambling hard-ons by different agencies!

How much tax dough was torched pulling the futile & humiliating 0-fer-45 count effort vs. BW?

Sen.Kyl & Co need a real hobby..drug trafficking..poverty..homelessness..AIDS..national economy..homeland security..infrastructure..energy issues..offshore outsourcing..etc..

You can drink poison, smoke poison, and eat poison(all of which falls on taxpayers as a problem), but God forbid you may want to invest your own hard-earned & already taxed money in a market place.

It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway):

The biggest "problem" people have with what you're telling them is that they don't buy the "I scalp a few tix" part. They know (and we know) that your full time tix scalping job pays for your gambling degeneracy. Why am I in this thread? LOL

It is good to hear others have the same dilemma. Most days, I am also an "investor". If I have to elaborate, I say "I work with short-term speculative investments." Usually I can get the subject changed at that point but from time to time I have to elaborate or risk appearing stand-off-ish.

Not too long ago I was in a blue-collar type local bar and someone was being extra inquisitive. I indicated I primarily trade commodities figuring it was well over his head. You wouldn't know by looking at this guy, but he did nothing but trade commodities on his own account for a living a couple years back. In spite of attempts to change the subject, this guy wanted to do nothing but talk commodities for the next hour. (What broker, what goods, shorts, longs, hedges,......) It was pure hell b/c Ithe only thing I know about commodities is how to spell it....and I am not even sure if I did that right.

Anyway, I also sometimes say "retired", "semi-retired", "investment consulting". I am only 25 so the retired bit usually leads to more questions rather than less. But it is fun to see people's expressions. And I kind of like the sense of mystery it creates and the speculation. Some people think I am a drug dealer or CIA agent. I have been travelling internationally quite a bit lately and have been meeting many new people. I feel a little more free to discuss the true nature of my income when I am gone. Most people seem to believe me and are actually impressed and intrigued.

I mostly use "Applied mathematician". "Casino consultant" is pretty accurate for sharps also - books are paying the sharps for opinions on which side is "right" by letting them play.
