I heard a stat that 50 million people in the US don't have health insurance. That's not my idea of an advanced society or nation.

The "official" US poverty line is so high that 98% of the world would gladly be officially poor in the states.

Are you saying that you don't see a difference between the living standards for the poor in Brazil as opposed to the poor in the U.S.? They've (Brazil) got a lot of unfortunate people living on less than a dollar a day. The U.S. defines poverty as a family of four making $14,000 a year. Plus there's food stamps, Aid to Dependant children and other programs to help people get by.
